Source text - English Simplified Introduction to Automated Sorting of Hold Baggage and the Associated Interfaces and Data Flows
1. Introduction
A BHS (Baggage Handling System) is a large electromechanical system for transporting baggage from input locations, such as check-in counters and in-feed conveyors for transfer baggage, to output locations in a ‘baggage hall’ for baggage handlers to load into aircraft containers (typically having a capacity of 30 to 50 bags) which are then driven to the aircraft and loaded into its hold . Although some BHSs have specific check-in counters connected to specific output positions in the baggage hall – i.e. the system simply transports baggage without sorting it – many have the capability to sort baggage to various different output positions in the baggage hall. The latter is commonly referred to as ‘sortation’.
Various electromechanical technologies are available for transporting and sorting baggage. Conveyor belts are often used for baggage transport, but other transport technologies used include totes, carts and trays that travel on rails or belts and transport individual bags. A BHS may even use of a combination of these technologies.
In a computer-controlled BHS, computers route bags through the BHS by using various types of sensors and activating various types of actuators in order to tip, push or divert the bags onto other lines or onto outlets from the system. Thus a computer-controlled BHS with multiple input and output locations can be used to sort baggage. However, in order to sort baggage a BHS computer has to be able to identify individual bags and also know to which outlet they have to be routed. This brief guide explains in a simplified way in which this is done.
Typical input locations are the conveyors at check-in counters and the conveyors in the baggage hall for transfer baggage. The output locations used to deliver baggage to the handlers in a baggage hall vary from airport to airport. Some airport terminals have chutes to deliver the baggage to the handlers, others have racetracks (also know as ‘carrousels’) and yet others have straight ‘laterals’ consisting of conveyors or rollers. These are referred to as ‘make-up chutes’, ‘make-up racetracks’ and ‘make-up laterals’ respectively.

Translation - English 2.0. PART 2. MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
Part 2 of this Report describes the Maintenance Procedures used in XXXXXX, following the order established in Appendix 2 of Section 2 of EASA Part-145.
The start-up of this Manual, following the philosophy EASA Part-145 and RAC-24, requires a greater commitment with the establishment and abiding of the procedures, and include not only the XXXXX’s own activities, but also to the acceptance of subcontractors and external suppliers.
The follow-up of the approved procedures abidance, by means of quality audits, is a basic component of the EASA Part-145 and RAC-24 Quality System, as it not only guarantees the updating of the procedures, but it also allows to determine those activity fields where not properly taken care of and where improvements can be made.
