Само собой, автомобиль с работающим двигателем. Беговые барабаны, чтобы мог "ехать" на месте. Газоанализаторы. Система труб для подачи выхлопа к анализаторам. На первый взгляд, все. Но при реализации этой простой схемы обнаруживаются нюансы.
На беговые барабаны надо подать нагрузочный момент, и не какой-нибудь постоянный, а имитирующий сопротивление дорожного полотна в зависимости от скорости. Для этого нужен мощный электродвигатель с управляемым электромагнитным моментом. А это силовой электропривод и адаптивная система автоматического регулирования к нему.
А прогнать испытуемый автомобиль нужно по строго определенному законом циклу, имитирующему, например, езду по городу в час пик.
Температуру и влажность в тестовой камере нужно измерять на протяжении всего испытательного цикла.
Выхлоп двигателя очень горячий (порядка 200oC), а концентрации контролируемых примесей то микроскопически малы, то скачком возрастают на порядок или больше. Значит, выхлоп надо измерять в широком диапазоне концентраций и как-то охлаждать, а ведь при этом из него конденсат выпадает, а в конденсате примеси растворяются и уходят от измерений. Может, воздухом разбавить − и охладится, и росы не образует? Так если выхлоп смешать с окружающим воздухом, а в нем тоже есть и углекислый газ, и летучие углеводороды, то влияние этих составляющих на результаты нужно потом как-то исключить.
А характеристики у анализаторов нелинейные, и дрейф у них, и ноль сбивается. Анализаторы надо калибровать и поверять, а как? Нужны калибровочные газы строго определенной концентрации для всех диапазонов. Нужны пневмоклапаны, которые эти калибровочные газы будут на анализаторы направлять и регуляторы давления, чтобы привести давление газов к норме, и датчики давления и температуры. Набирается добрый шкаф со всякой пневматикой − десятки клапанов, регуляторов, помп, датчиков. И хозяйством этим надо управлять − не руками же кнопочки нажимать. Автоматизировать все это надо. Стало быть, нужен управляющий компьютер.
И даже когда мы решим эти технические проблемы − вот, едем: на выходе анализаторов скачут какие-то числа (в форме цифрового кода, между прочим), меняются аж по 10 раз за секунду − ну, и что с ними делать? Надо как-то запомнить эти данные за весь тестовый цикл и потом обработать − разумеется, по законодательству. Опять же, без компьютера не обойтись. А к компьютеру надо написать софт (весьма непростой) и нарисовать GUI − удобный и с учетом вкусов заказчика.
Здесь перечислены далеко не все проблемы, но и сказанного достаточно, чтобы почувстовать сложность задачи. Решалась она многими людьми не один год, и на сегодняшний день решение выглядит примерно следующим образом.

Obviously, a motor car with a running engine. Chassis dynamometers for it to “drive” on-the-spot. Gas analyzers. The system of pipes for directing exhaust to analyzers. At first sight, that’s it. However, when implementing this simple scheme, nuances come out.
For the chassis dynamometers, it is necessary to apply a loading torque that should be not constant, but simulating the roadway resistance depending on the speed. For that, we need a powerful electrical motor with controlled electromagnetic torque. And this is a power motor drive with a loop control system.
The motorcar should be driven according to a cycle strictly determined by the law simulating, for example, driving through the city at a rush hour.
The temperature and humidity in the test cell should be measured during the whole testing cycle.
The engine exhaust is very hot (around 200oC), and concentrations of measured admixtures can be extremely low or can stepwise get the next-higher order. Therefore, exhaust should be measured in the wide range of concentrations and should be cooled; however, the condensate precipitates while cooling. Admixtures dissolve in condensate and therefore cannot be measured. Maybe, dissolving exhaust with air is a way out – it will be cooled and the water will not condensate? But if exhaust is mixed with the ambient air which also contains CO2 and volatile hydrocarbons, it is necessary to eliminate the influence of these components on test results.
Analyzers have non-linear characteristics and zero drift. They, therefore, should be calibrated and checked, but how? To do this, we need span gases of specific concentrations for all measurement ranges. We need pneumatic valves that will direct these gases to analyzers, and pressure regulators to bring gas pressure to the standard, as well as pressure and temperature sensors. As a result, we got a pretty cabinet of various pneumatics − tens of valves, regulators, pumps and sensors. All this stuff should be controlled − hardly will you agree to press the buttons manually. The system should be automated. Therefore, we need a controlling computer.
Even when all these technical problems are solved − here, we are driving! − at the output of analyzers some figures are jumping (in the form of digital code, by the way) changing 10 times a second − well, and what can we do about them? It is necessary to record all these data, that were gathered during the whole test cycle, and then process them − of course, according to the legislation. Again, we cannot do this without a computer. And the computer needs software (pretty complicated) to be developed, and GUI − handy and complying with the customer's requirements.
These are far from being the whole list of problems, but what we listed is enough to see how complicated the problem is. Over a period of years, many people have made many efforts towards solving this problem, and at present the solution looks as follows.

Source text - English Hoist Arm Optimal Control
Abstract.
Based on dynamical programming algorithm allows to obtain speed profiles, optimal by the ”time – energy losses” criterion, for a two link manipulator moving along a vertical guide. The algorithm is based on dynamical programming, and it guaranties finding a global optimum with taking into account limitations on velocity and acceleration. The advantage of the obtained optimal trajectories is the smoothness of corresponding torque diagrams, by which the jerks in motions are eliminated.
The controlled plant. The so called “hoist arm”, shown schematically in Fig.1, is used for lowering and lifting boards into/from the baths in the production line for printed circuit boards galvanization. The hoist arm is mounted on the portal transporter which moves on the rails along a production line from one bath to another.

Both links have equal lengths l and masses mln; m1 and m2 are the masses of correspondingly the “elbow” joint, and the grip with the load. The moving motor with a drive is installed in the “shoulder” (upper) joint. The grip moves along the vertical guide between the lowest point, where displacement x = 0, and the upper point, where x = 4l. Kinematics of the hoist arm is described by the following equation:

Резюме.
Основанный на динамическом программировании алгоритм позволяет находить оптимальные по критерию «время - энергопотери» профили скорости для двухзвенного манипулятора, перемещающего грузы вдоль вертикальной направляющей. Алгоритм сохраняет работоспособность при наличии фазовых ограничений. В отсутствие ограничений оптимальным профилям скорости отвечают непрерывные диаграммы движущих моментов, что исключает толчки во время движения.
Объект управления. Подъемный манипулятор (рис.1), используется для опускания и подъема панелей печатных плат в/из ванн в автоматической линии для гальванизации печатных плат. Подъемный манипулятор смонтирован на портальном транспортере, перемещающемся по рельсам вдоль автоматической линии от одной ванны к другой.

Оба звена подъемного манипулятора имеют одинаковые длины l и массы mln; m1 и m2 -- это массы соответственно «локтевого» шарнира и захвата с полезным грузом.
