Source text - Portuguese O objetivo desta pesquisa é fazer um levantamento de como a avaliação de leitura
em inglês como língua estrangeira é conduzida no Centro de Línguas e
Interculturalidade da Universidade Federal do Paraná (Celin – UFPR).
Primeiramente, discutiu-se a natureza de testes de língua, concepções de língua e
de leitura, bem como a evolução dos testes de língua ao longo da história, métodos
de teste e tipos de questões de leitura. Após a análise dos testes selecionados para
a pesquisa, observou-se que, embora diversos métodos de testes sejam utilizados,
as questões elaboradas em geral limitam-se a testar apenas a capacidade dos
alunos de reconhecer informações explícitas na superfície textual. Verificou-se
também a existência de itens que testam outras habilidades que não a
compreensão de leitura. A partir dessas constatações, concluiu-se que é necessário
estabelecer critérios mais definidos para a elaboração de testes de leitura, bem
como para o ensino de leitura em sala de aula.

Translation - English The objective of this research is to survey how reading in English as a foreign
language is assessed at the Intercultural Language Center of the Federal University
of Paraná (Celin – UFPR). First, we discuss the nature of language tests, concepts of
language and reading, the evolution of language tests throughout history, testing
methods and types of reading questions. After analyzing the tests selected for the
study, we observed that although various testing methods are used, most questions
merely test the students' ability to recognize explicit information on the textual
surface. Also, we verified that some items test skills other than reading
comprehension. From these findings, we concluded that it is necessary to establish
more precise criteria for the development of reading tests, as well as for the teaching
of reading in the classroom.
