Source text - English From the beach, Kya ran to her rig and roared full throttle into the sea, headed straight for the rips. Holding her head back, she screamed, “You mean, SHIT…SUMBITCH!” Sloppy and confused waves jerked the bow sideways, pulling against the tiller. As always, the ocean seemed angrier than the marsh. Deeper, it had more to say.
Long ago, Kya’d learned how to read ordinary currents and riptides; how to ride them out or break away by cutting perpendicular to their course. But she’d never headed straight into the deeper currents, some of them stirred by the Gulf Stream, which gushes four billion cubic feet of water every second, more power than all the land rivers on earth combined -- all streaming just beyond North Carolina’s outstretched arms. The surge produces cruel back currents, fisted eddies, and reverse circulations that swirl with coastal riptides, birthing one of the nastiest snake pits of the planet’s seas. Kya had avoided these areas all her life, but not now. Today she aimed straight for their throats, anything to outrun the pain, the anger.

Ondas confusas e caóticas projetavam a proa do barco para o lado, exercendo pressão contra o leme. Como sempre, o mar parecia mais furioso e intenso do que o pantanal — como se tivesse mais para dizer.
Há muito que Kya aprendera a distinguir as correntes vulgares dos agueiros — como navegá-los ou evitá-los, avançando perpendicularmente ao seu curso — mas nunca fora direita às correntes mais profundas, ao largo da costa da Carolina do Norte, algumas delas impelidas pela Corrente do Golfo que move cento e dez biliões de metros cúbicos de água por segundo, e cuja energia é superior à energia combinada de todos os rios à face da Terra. A rebentação provoca terríveis correntes de retorno, redemoinhos cerrados e circulação invertida das águas que giram nas correntes costeiras, gerando um dos mais temíveis ninhos de cobra dos mares do planeta. Source text - English Those two think I’m stupid.
They honestly think I have no idea how intense their relationship was. Nell used to sneak away from school to see him. I never saw him or found out who he was, but I remember how different she became. Secretive but happy; then, as the time came for her to go to university, instead of being excited because she was getting out of Brighton and away from everything that had happened to her here, she would regularly come home with red, puffy eyes. Obviously from crying at the thought of leaving her boyfriend, whoever he was. I remember her disappearing more and more as the time to go to university drew closer, and how distressed she looked all the time.
I’ve given them so many chances to tell the truth. To admit that it wasn’t a quick thing, that they were shagging when she came back from university, when she was living at Mummy and Daddy’s place. But they don’t. Won’t. Can’t. Whichever. The fact is they haven’t. Because they think I’m fragile. Poor Macy, can’t cope with the truth. It’s them being secretive that’s the problem, not the fact they used to go out together.

Estão mesmo convencidos de que eu não sei até que ponto a relação deles foi intensa. A Nell costumava escapar-se da escola para ir ter com ele. Nunca o vi nem descobri quem ele era, mas lembro-me de como ela mudou. Tornou-se misteriosa, mas parecia feliz. Depois, quando chegou a altura de ir para a universidade, em vez de ficar entusiasmada por sair de Brighton e afastar-se de tudo o que acontecera, chegava muitas vezes a casa com os olhos vermelhos e inchados. Era evidente que tinha estado a chorar por ter de abandonar o namorado, fosse lá ele quem fosse. Lembro-me de a ver desaparecer cada vez mais, à medida que se aproximava o dia de ir para a universidade, e de parecer sempre bastante perturbada.
Dei-lhes tantas oportunidades para me contarem a verdade. Para admitirem que não tiveram apenas um caso passageiro, que dormiam juntos, quando ela voltou da universidade, e vivia em casa dos nossos pais. Mas eles não o admitem. Não querem ou não podem admitir, não sei. O facto é que não o fizeram. Porque acham que eu sou frágil. A pobre Macy não consegue lidar com a verdade. O problema é estarem com reservas, não o facto de terem andado juntos.

I am a freelance translator for 12 years and I have completed 36 projects of literary translation to this day.
Besides the attested experience on the literary area, and although this was actually my one full time activity on the past 12 years, I’m also an experienced translator of commercial and technical English, as a result of my prior experience as sales/marketing assistant, from 1982 to 2006, during which period I was very often commissioned for extra translation work.
My priority is to keep working on literary (or journalistic translation) projects but at this stage I’m fully available for technical and commercial translation as well. As a versatile translator, I'm also willing to accept translations related with any of my areas of interest.
Translating from Portuguese into English is also an option.
