Bio
Overnight translation

I live and work in New Zealand, so I am working while everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is asleep. Send me your document as you're leaving work, and I'll have the finished translation in your inbox when you arrive at work the next morning.

Translation experience

I have been a self-employed freelance translator since September 2012. Prior to that, I worked for seven years as an in-house translator and editor for a large New Zealand agency, NZTC International Ltd, where I translated hundreds of thousands of words from French, Italian, and Dutch into English. My translations covered a diverse range of content, including:
• User and service manuals for medical devices
• Tourist brochures for Vanuatu and New Caledonia
• Legislative extracts
• Commercial tender documents
• Website marketing text
• Leases for apartments in Switzerland
• Birth certificates, diplomas and drivers licences

My translations strike a balance between rigorous attention to detail, and a natural-sounding style.

Legal experience

Before becoming a translator, I worked for two years as an in-house lawyer for the NZ Teachers Council (a Crown Entity). My role involved drafting letters and legal documents, including policy memos, statutory rules and Council judgments. I absorbed the phraseology of legal drafting and the distinctive written language style of government departments, and have been able to draw on this experience when translating letters, contracts, legislation and court decisions.

Commitment to producing high-quality work

I have always been a high achiever, demanding the best from myself in everything I have attempted. As a born perfectionist, I aim to produce translations that require as few editing corrections as possible. However, I believe that the usability of my translations is more important than technical accuracy. I endeavour to make the translation as logical and readable as possible. In many cases, this can mean that the translation ends up being better written than the source text.

Ability to meet tight deadlines

I am a fast, efficient translator and editor. During my seven years at NZTC, I built a reputation as a linguist who could be relied upon to complete a job before the deadline and to a high standard. I know that there can be many unforeseen hurdles to timely completion of translation jobs, from computer malfunction, to the client amending the source text the day before the job is due. But I am flexible enough to work around these issues, and I am always prepared to put in extra effort if a deadline is particularly tight.
