Source text - Italian La storia di Gregory Bateson “a distinguished anthropologist” come lo definì alla sua morte “The Times” (7 luglio 1980), merita una ri-lettura alla luce di quello che lui stesso scriveva sul significato del “pensare per storie”, come ulteriore possibilità di conoscenza. L’ambiente élitario di Cambridge, dove il padre biologo e zoologo di fama, grande estimatore di Gregorio Mendel (da lui il nome al figlio), era Fellow, presso il prestigioso St. John’s college, influì non poco sul “destino” del giovane studente di
zoologia che seguì all’inizio le orme paterne. Abitare in una casa laboratorio come quella di Merton House, come si apprende dalla bellissima biografia di David Lipset (1980) non ancora tradotta in italiano, dove era stata allestita persino un’incubatrice ed un pollaio per poter studiare dal vivo tutti i comportamenti degli animali, pernici
comprese, costituì un continuo stimolo ad “apprendere ad apprendere”.
In seguito il curioso studente si rese conto che i suoi orizzonti richiedevano un ambiente ancora più vario, soprattutto quando, di ritorno dal suo primo viaggio alle isole Galapagos, rese famose dagli studi di Darwin, di cui erano profondi ammiratori sia il padre che il figlio, s’accorse che aveva prestato più attenzione alle persone che agli animali.
Translation - English Bateson’s story, the story of a distinguished anthropologist, as The Times described him after his death (7 July 1980), deserves a second reading, considering what he wrote on the meaning of “thinking by stories”, as an additional opportunity for knowledge. The elitist atmosphere of Cambridge, where his father – a renowned biologist and zoologist and a great admirer of Gregor Mendel (hence, his son’s first name) – was a fellow of prestigious St. John’s College, greatly influenced the “fate” of the young zoology student who started his academic career in his father’s footsteps. As described in an excellent biography by David Lipset (1982), he lived in Merton House, a sort of house-laboratory where he set up an incubator and a fowl house to investigate animal behaviour on the field, grouses included. This life experience was a constant incitement for him to “learn how to learn”.
Later on, the curious student realized that he needed broadening his horizons. In particular, after coming back from his first trip to the Galapagos islands, made famous by the research performed by Darwin (whom both the son and the father deeply admired), he realized that, in reality, he had given more attention to people than animals.
