I am a lawyer-turned translator from English to Korean (native language) and vice versa based in South Korea and have a wealth of experience in translation and work. My specialties are legal and business translations due to my training, license, and seasoned experience both in the areas of language and subject matter.
I obtained law degrees (LL.M. and J.D.) from Indiana University Maurer School of Law—Bloomington and have been admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia of the United States of America. Also, my 15 years of experience in South Korea and the United States span both the public and private sector. During this period, I dealt with various laws as a government official, and drafted international commercial contracts and other documents in my capacity as in-house counsel for a startup company.
In quasi-judicial agencies, including the Fair Trade Commission, South Korea's antitrust watchdog, I applied many different kinds of Korean laws—civil law (including standardized contract law), commercial law, antitrust law, constitutional law, criminal law, criminal procedure law, human rights law, etc.—to myriad cases and wrote briefs and investigative reports for over 11 years, honing writing skills and meeting tight deadlines for administrative adjudication. In addition, I handled U.S. immigration cases in a U.S. law firm and drafted international commercial contracts and other documents in a Korean startup company, for more than three years.
My seven-year-long translation have centered on legal or, to a lesser extent, business matters, such as contracts, litigation files, articles of incorporation, newsletters, localization, ISO documents, etc. In particular, the contracts I have translated from English to Korean and vice versa include agreements on license for S/W, patent, trademark and copyright; joint development; joint venture; purchase; supply; shipbuilding; arbitration rule; sponsorship; guarantee; and distributorship. Further, I have been appointed as an expert adviser to Korean International Trade Association on foreign language support (English) for traders since March 2013. Finally, I am familiar with MS-Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and use SDL Trados Studio and Wordfast Pro.
I am glad to have an opportunity to work with Proz.com members and look forward to meeting you soon through translation. Thank you.
