Source text - English India's Kumbh Mela Festival
On Monday, around 8 million Hindu pilgrims jumped to the sacred Ganges river in India to wash away their sins. This was the first day of the Kumbh Mela, or Pitcher Festival, one of the world's largest religious gatherings. It is organized every 12 years.
Around 100 million people will attend the festival over the next 55 days. The pilgrims came from all corners of India, travelling by train, bus, rickshaw and covering the last miles on foot as the entire festival ground was turned into a pedestrian zone.
The festival started by naked holy men with ash smeared on their bodie running into the water. They were followed by men, women and children chanted Hindu scriptures as they walked into the water.
The Kumbh Mela is more than 2,000 years old. According to Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela celebrates the victory of gods over demons in a furious battle over a pitcher of nectar that would give them immortality.
- Millions of people taking a bath in the holy waters of Ganges river! Wow!
- Yes Alberto.
- That’s what I call a party!
- It is a colorful and happy occasion. It also has a very important religious meaning.
- I know, I know. It washes away all the sins that people have committed in the past. The main event is the ritual bath.
- That’s correct. But the festival is more than that.
- What else?
- The festival is the place where Hindu holy men get together to discuss their faith. And pilgrims can listen to them and pray with them, and get their blessings.
- OK, I get it. There is some educational aspect of that.
- You can say that.
- And you get a blessing from a holy man. No bad!
- Yes, that too.
- But still what a great party!
- Puoi dirlo bene.
- E ricevere una benedizione da un santone. Niente male!
- Si, anche questo.
- Ma ancora che grande festa!
