When Ming dynasty built the city of Xi’an, the city has four gates: Changle, Yongning, Anding, and Anyuan. These names were engraved on the bluestone doors outside of the great cave door. The tower erected above the cave was called main building. Also, it was a commander defensive office. Another building named archery building was built above Yuancheung cave door attached with some arrow windows. Additionally, it was used to shoot archeries as defensive purposes. Four gates were opened at the republic of china period. Commonly known as small four: Zhongshan gate (small east gate), now located the eastern end of east street. It was built to commemorate Sun Yat Sen. Wumu door(small south gate), at the south end of today’s Shi Fu street, Yuqiang door(small west gate) was at west end of Lianhu road. After the liberation, this door was demolished. Another door liberation door (small north door), formerly known as the main entrance and sited at north end of Jiefang Road, it was built up because of the traffic purpose from Longhai road to Xi’an. But it was demolished in year 1952 due to railway extension. Meanwhile, Xi’an also established new city door after liberation. There are Jianguo door of south wall, HePing door, Wenchang door, Zhuquen door and HangGuang door. Additionally, Suntech door of North Wall and ChaoYang door of east wall.
There were 98 enemy watchtowers built above Xian’s city wall at Ming Dynasty and enemy builds above each watchtower. But according to survey made by Xi’an city wall management center in Year 1982, finding none ancient enemy tower left so far only some foundation stones. After Xi’an local government rebuilt 12 units’ enemy towers with brick and wood construction. It was designed as peak style, second floor eaves and veranda set at the bottom floor.
Ancient city wall’s facility was not only used to enemy defense and arrow practice. Also built Kuixinglou, which was used to memories the literary dominate Kiuxing. Xi’an Kuixinglou was built in South Gate East, after being destroyed in war, later on, Kuixinglou was rehabilitated in situ. It is an attractive place, which is worth for tourist’s visiting.
New Face of the Ancient City Walls
After 10 years overall development, the ancient capital Xi’an has broken Old Ming Dynasty’s city walls and transformed these walls into a distinctive tourism attraction rarely existing attraction both on Western and Eastern. In Year 1983, a conservation and development zone was found in Xi’an, it is the largest project since the founding of China’s government.
To the end of year 1997, total investment of 227 million Yuan, this project was not only a comprehensive renovation of the wall, but also being filled the big and small caves 1650 pcs. Meanwhile, there are rebuilt four watchtowers, 2 unit Jiao Lou, South Gate Moon City, Zhanglou, and Bridges respectively. Also, comprehensive remediation Ring River, forest, and roads were established. Now, the tourist can see 13340 meters long city wall if they slowly walk from remediation Horse Road. Furthermore, another 11500 meter long daughter wall has being renovated thoroughly. When you stand 12 meters height the head of city wall, overlooking the whole view of Xi’an, such as Zhounan Mountain at south area, The Northern Wei River. In panoramic view of cityscape, all attraction is included. Some bowls grind stone and defensive tools are displayed on the city, whiles the bridge and ladder are facilitated to the tourists. 20 bridges were built between Ring River and City Wall Foot. Also, some green area there, which is a largest green park. In Xi’an, hut Vacherie, antique Tinglang, monument, sculpture etc. are all available.
The development of the ancient city wall of Xi’an has been highly praised by Chinese tourist and foreign visitors. In the past, the ancient wall obstructed the development of modern cities. But now, it has become a colorful garlands of city. The experts also evaluated, Qin Shi Huang Bing Ma Xiang’s excavations, is one of miracle achievement in the world. While the Ming Dynasty city wall’s maintenance, which also attracts worldwide attention. Therefore, UNESCO experts all agreed to recommend Xi’an city wall’s maintence project it in the “world heritage list.” after they visited this site.
