What is Literature?
To explain the definition of literature needs a long discussion. When someone asks what literature is, it may automatically reminds you lists of authors and the works they write. In other time, literature may lead you to lines of flowery sentences with various figures of speech. Literature is composed of those books, and of those books only, which in the first, by reason of their subject matter and their mode of treating it, are of genial human interest; and in which in the second place, the element of form and the pleasure which focus give are to be regarded as essential (Budianta, et al, 2002: 3-4).
A piece of literature is different from other kind of work because it does not claim to be enjoyed by only particular group of readers, but to all men and women as men and women. Literary work not only simply to import knowledge, but it also gives aesthetic satisfaction by the way how it presents its messages.
We deal with literature primarily because it tells about human significance. A great book grows directing out of life with large, close and fresh relations with life. Literature is a vital record of what people have seen in life, what they have experienced, what they though and felt about. It is an expression of life trough the medium of language.
The great impact behind literature may be grouped into four different factors: firstly, it is treated as tools of self-expression to actualize someone’s self. Secondly, it is a tool to express curiosity of people’s life and what they are doing since people’s life and what they do are always interesting to know. Thirdly, certain people have tendency to get in touch or have interest in the world of reality in which they live in and the existence of the world of imagination which they conjure into existence. Fourthly, people may also have interest in the form of that work of literature itself.
We are strongly interested in impelling to others our thoughts and feelings; hence the literature directly expresses the thoughts and feelings of the writers. We are interested and curios in human’s lives; the lives themselves, motives, passions, relationships, hence literature exists with great and various story of human life experiences. We are fond of telling others about the thing we have seen or imagined; hence the literature describes them. And where the aesthetic impulse and value are present, we take a special satisfaction in shaping out expression into forms of beauty; hence it is the literature as art.
Human is social animal and his/her nature is unable to keep his/her experience/s, observations, ideas, emotions, fancies, to him/herself, for there is always a story and wish to impart them in the various forms of literature, and they are regarded as one of the way out of many ways or channels which s/he has opened up for him/her self for the discharge of his/her sociality through media which show a desire to blend expression with artistic creation.
So literature as an interpretation of life shaped and made in the mind of the interpreter. It leads to the role of the literature as self-expression which includes different kinds of literary works like poetry, which they are written from the personal point of view; and also literature of artistic and literary criticism. We also have literature in which, the writer, instead of going down into him/self, goes out of external human life and activity; and they include the epic, the romance in verse and prose, the novel and the drama.

Apa itu Literatur?
Untuk menjelaskan arti dari literatur butuh diskusi yang panjang. Ketika seseorang bertanya apa itu literatur, secara otomatis pertanyaan itu akan mengingatkan kita pada daftar-daftar penulis dan karya yang mereka tulis. Di waktu lain, literatur dapat menuntun kita pada baris-baris kalimat yang berbunga-bunga dengan variasi bentuk bahasa. Literatur tersusun atas buku-buku, dan hanya pada buku-buku saja, dengan alasan utama pada subjeknya dan cara penangganannya yang merupakan ketertarikan manusia; dan alasan kedua, unsur yang terbentuk dan kesenangan yang diberikan berfokus pada pemahaman hal-hal dasar.
Sebuah literatur berbeda dengan jenis karya yang lain karena literatur tidak menuntut untuk dinikmati oleh pembaca-pembaca kelompok tertentu saja, tapi untuk semua laki-laki dan perempuan. Karya literatur tidak sesederhana hanya untuk menambah pengetahuan, tapi juga memberikan kepuasan estetis dengan cara penyampaian pesannya.
Kita menguraikan literatur terutama karena literatur memberitahukan tentang arti manusia. Sebuah buku yang bagus tumbuh langsung dari hidup dengan hubungan yang besar, dekat dan baru dengan hidup. Literatur adalah catatan penting dari apa yang telah dilihat oleh orang-orang di dalam hidup, apa yang mereka alami, tentang apa yang mereka pikirkan dan mereka rasakan. Literatur memiliki ekspresi hidup melalui perantaraan bahasa.
Pengaruh besar dibalik literatur dapat dikelompokkan menjadi empat faktor yang berbeda: pertama, literatur digunakan sebagai alat untuk mengekspresikan diri untuk mewujudkan diri seseorang. Kedua, literatur sebagai alat untuk mengekspresikan keingintahuan tentang hidup manusia dan apa yang manusia lakukan sepanjang hidup mereka dan apa yang selalu menarik untuk diketahui. Ketiga, orang-orang memiliki kecenderungan untuk berhubungan atau memiliki ketertarikan pada kenyataan dunia di mana mereka hidup dan adanya dunia imajinasi yang mereka hidupkan. Keempat, manusia juga dapat memiliki ketertarikan dalam bentuk karya literatur itu sendiri.
Kita sangat tertarik untuk memaksakan pikiran dan perasaan kita pada orang lain; oleh sebab itu literatur mengungkapkan pikiran dan perasaan penulis secara langsung. Kita tertarik dan ingin tahu hidup manusia; hidup itu sendiri, alasan, keinginan, hubungan, oleh sebab itu literatur menggambarkan itu semua. Dan di mana dorongan estetika dan nilai yang hadir, kita mengambil kepuasan khusus dalam membentuk ekspresi kita kedalam bentuk keindahan, oleh sebab itu literatur menjadi seni.
Manusia adalah hewan sosial dan sifat dasarnya tidak dapat menahan pengalamannya, pandangan, ide, emosi, khayalan-khayalan, untuk dirinya, selalu ada cerita dan harapan untuk menanamkannya pada berbagai bentuk literatur, dan mereka dianggap sebagai salah satu jalan keluar dari beberapa cara atau sumber yang telah terbuka untuk diri mereka untuk melaksanakan sosialitasnya melalui media yang menunjukkan keinginan untuk memadukan ekspresi dengan penciptaan yang artistik.
Maka literatur sebagai salah satu bentuk interpretasi hidup dan dibuat dalam pikiran penafsir. Bentuk interpretasi hidup membawa peranan literatur sebagai penyataan diri yang mencakup berbagai jenis karya-karya kesusastraan seperti puisi, yang ditulis dari sudut pandang pribadi; dan juga artistik literatur dan kritik kesusastraan.

Long ago in China, there lived a foolish man. He was big and strong and liked to walk in the part of the forest where tigers lived.
“Don’t go there,” people warned him. “It’s dangerous. There are tigers about.”
The foolish man took no notice. “I didn’t care!” he replied. “I’m so big and strong. I’m not afraid of tigers.”
One day, however, he met a ferocious tiger. The foolish man looked at its big, sharp teeth and long, fierce claws. Then, the tiger roared. The foolish man was very frightened. He shivered and shook. He ran out of the forest as fast as his two legs would carry him.
However, the foolish man soon got tired. He puffed and panted. The tiger was close behind him. It roared excitedly, thinking of the delicious meal it could have. The foolish man saw a coconut tree. Up the tree he scrambled, as fast as he could.
The tiger prowled around the tree. “I will wait for that foolish man to get tired and fall.” It though. It licked its lips, thinking about how tasty the man would be.
Sure enough, the foolish man soon felt tired. His arms no longer had the strength to hold on to the tree. He fell down, down, down, right onto the tiger’s back.
The foolish man knew that the moment he got off the tiger, it would surely eat him. He wrapped his legs tightly around the tiger’s body. He wrapped his arms tightly around its neck. The tiger tried its hardest to shake off the man but it had no luck. People gathered to watch as the tiger galloped past.
“What a brave man!” they exclaimed. “He is daring enough to ride a tiger!”
“Help! Help!” shouted the man. “I am not really brave. Help me down, please!” he pleaded. However, the wind blew away his words. Nobody heard them. Off the tiger galloped into the sunset, with the foolish man clinging to its back.

Pada zaman dahulu di Cina, hiduplah seorang laki-laki yang bodoh. Laki-laki itu besar dan kuat dan suka berjalan di hutan tempat tinggal harimau.
“Jangan ke sana,” orang-orang memperingatinya. “Bahaya. Ada harimau di sekitar sana.”
Laki-laki itu tidak menghiraukannya. “Aku tidak peduli!” jawabnya, “Aku begitu besar dan kuat. Aku tidak takut dengan harimau.”
Tetapi, suatu hari, ia bertemu dengan seekor harimau yang ganas. Laki-laki bodoh itu melihat gigi harimau yang besar, tajam dan cakarnya yang panjang dan ganas. Kemudian, harimau itu mengaum. Laki-laki bodoh itu sangat ketakutan. Ia gemetaran dan menggeleng-geleng. Ia berlari keluar hutan secepat yang dapat dibawa oleh kedua kakinya.
Namun, laki-laki bodoh itu segera merasa capek. Ia terengah-engah dan sesak napas. Harimau itu berada dekat di belakangnya. Ia mengaum dengan gembira, memikirkan makanan lezat yang bisa ia dapat. Laki-laki bodoh itu melihat sebatang pohon kelapa. Berjuang memanjati pohon itu secepat yang ia bisa.
Harimau itu berkeliling di sekitar pohon itu. “Aku akan menunggu hingga laki-laki bodoh itu lelah dan jatuh,” pikirnya. Harimau itu menjilati bibirnya, memikirkan betapa lezatnya laki-laki itu.
Tentu saja, laki-laki bodoh itu segera merasa lelah. Tangannya sudah tidak memiliki kekuatan untuk memegang pohon tersebut. Ia merosot turun, turun, turun ke atas punggung harimau.
Laki-laki bodoh itu tahu jika ia terlepas dari harimau itu, harimau itu pasti akan memakannya. Ia melilitkan kakinya dengan erat ke sekeliling tubuh harimau. Ia melilitkan tangannya dengan erat ke sekeliling leher harimau. Harimau itu berupaya sangat keras melepaskan diri dari laki-laki itu tapi tidak beruntung. Orang-orang berkumpul melihat ketika harimau itu ditunggangi.
“Sungguh laki-laki yang pemberani!” mereka berseru. “Ia berani menunggangi harimau!”
“Tolong! Tolong!” teriak laki-laki itu. “Aku tidak cukup berani menunggangi harimau!” pintanya. Namun, angin meniup pergi kata-katanya. Tidak ada yang dapat mendengarnya. Harimau itu berlari kencang ke arah matahari terbenam, dengan laki-laki bodoh itu berpegangan erat pada punggungnya.
