Source text - Bulgarian
Translation - English Bulgarian Historiography
Stefan Marinov Minkov
Abstract: The problems connected with the Great War became an object of research and analysis right after its end. Three periods could be differentiated in the historiographical research: between the two world wars; a period of ideological interpretation (1944-1989); and a period of a new approach to the interpretation of the war (after the changes in 1989). During the 1970s a tendency towards objectivity of historical research, including new topics in the field of vision of authors could already be noted. Bulgarian researchers deal with a limited circle of problems concerned with the part Bulgaria took in WW1. As a whole, the methodology of research could be evaluated as too old, and only during the last decades new approaches to interpretation of events are being used. There are only few studies which outgrow the margins of the military and political history of the WW1. After the beginning of the 21st century the interest towards the world war gradually increases. This is due to the many white holes which give opportunities for research and interpretation as well as the considerable quantities of unprocessed documents.
1. The Bulgarian historiography between the two world wars
After the end of the First World War the first attempts of its being analyzed and evaluated by the contemporaries1 become a fact. Different factors influence the first researches. These factors are characterized with their remoteness from the events. On the one hand, intensified political fervour, resulting from the negative results for Bulgaria during the Great War could be seen. On the other hand, there is a distinctive lack of documents and research, which could contribute to forming a more wholesome and objective image of the past events. Politically motivated evaluations cross paths with attempts for an objective analysis. Undoubtedly, the former dominate over the latter. During this period part of the publications concerned with the war could be characterized both as a first-hand source of information and also as a historical research. This is due to the fact that many researchers were former witnesses or participants in the events. Also, a number of political and military figures publish their memoirs doing research at the same time. In doing so, they make an attempt to extend the object of description and also to summarize the information which could give them the opportunity for a wider view over the problems being interpreted.
Two priority fields of problems could be identified. They were of great interest for the researchers in the 1920s and 1930s. These are: the problem concerned with the people responsible for the Second National Catastrophe (this is the name given to the failure of Bulgaria during the First World War); and a research and description of the part the Bulgarian army took in the war. The first problematic issue includes research done by political and military figures, but also by scientists working in different spheres of humanity studies2. The second problem is researched and interpreted mainly by military historians, which is an indicator of the aims and methodology of the Bulgarian historical science during this period3. There are only a few historical researches outside of the above mentioned circles, although there is no lack of such. The main topics being researched are the consequences of the Thessaloniki Armistice and the Peace Treaty of Neuilly for Bulgaria, the history of the Bulgarians and the Bulgarian territories left outside the borders of the country and also the reasons for Bulgaria’s participation in the war. In the context of the political situation in the country and Europe during the period between the two world wars, these researches could be characterized mainly as political or propagandist.
It should be mentioned that a series of memoirs and research of authors from other countries who participated in the war were translated. These papers deal with the part Bulgaria took at the Balkans fronts. Besides, similar to other European countries, documents with political and/or propagandist aim are being published. The first collection of such documents was published at the end of the war and during the Paris Peace Conference. Records of the trials against the people responsible for the national catastrophe were published at the beginning of the 1920s. It is evident that during the first ten years after the end of the war there was an accumulation of documents and research, which would be used in later years by all researchers.
1.1. The issue of the people responsible for the Second National Catastrophe
A series of researches is being interpreted. They deal with problems concerning the break- through near Dobro Pole during the second half of September 1918, which led to the signing of the Thessaloniki Armistice on 29 September, 1918 and the end of Bulgaria’s participation in the war. The political situation within the country and the leadership of the Radical Agrarian Union became a further factor for the tense atmosphere. As could be expected, the authors taking part in this original discussion were rarely unbiased and seldom attempted to be so. The historical interpretations were removed from the political passions and personal emotions of the participants in the above-mentioned events. Many of these works were published during the signing of the Peace Treaty of Paris and coincided with the Bulgarians’ Peace Treaty of Neuilly which was degrading and humiliating. At a moment like this there have to be guilty people and “scapegoats”. These were found by the formed state court, which sentenced some of the leading political figures as well as military, journalists and common people to prison for different lengths of time. This situation formed the political, rather than the historical character of the works from the researched problematic field, but they need to be put under the “historical” category as well if it is considered that when they were written some research work had been done and documents used which were systematically analysed.
There are three possible directions which could lead to the ones responsible for the Bulgarian catastrophe. These are: King Ferdinand and Vasil Radoslavov’s government (sometimes the coalition government of Alexander Malinov and Stoyan Kosturkov, ruling Bulgaria after 1918 could be placed in the same category); on the other hand, there is the corrupting propaganda and activities within the Agrarian Union and left-wing socialists, the former name of the communist party. The third object of criticism and attacks is Germany, blamed for not fulfilling its alliance responsibilities and for gradually withdrawing a big part of its army from the Macedonian front. Other problems within the relations between Bulgaria and Germany are also present: the problem of the status of Northern Dobrudja during the peace negotiations with Rumania, the exploitation of Bulgarian resources from the German allies, unregulated export of foods, etc.4
