German to English: The Laughter of the Thracian Woman Detailed field: Philosophy
Translation - English Theory is something that no one sees. While the behavior that consti- tutes theory does consist of actions that follow intentional rules and lead to complex systems of statements in regulated contexts, these actions are visible as “procedures” only on their surface. To someone uninitiated in their intentionality, who perhaps does not even suspect that they fall under the category of “theory,” these actions must remain puzzling; indeed, they can appear objectionable or even laughable.
German to English: Reference standards and reference multipliers for the comparison of the citation impact of papers published in different time periods General field: Social Sciences
Source text - German {Note: the source text begins with the authors' attempt at an English translation.} Determining highly cited papers (and also lowly cited papers) is possible only based on field-specific reference standards, as there are large differences in the expected citation frequencies within different fields. Radicchi, Fortunato, and Castellano (2008) found, for example, that papers in “Engineering & Aerospace” are cited on average 5.65 times, whereas papers in “Astronomy & Astrophysics” are cited on average 23.77 times.
Translation - English It is only possible to determine which papers are highly cited (and which ones are seldom cited) on the basis of field-specific reference standards, because of differences in the expected citation frequencies within different fields. Radicchi, Fortunato, and Castellano (2008) found, for example, that papers in “Engineering & Aerospace” are cited on the average 5.65 times, whereas papers in “Astronomy & Astrophysics” are cited on average 23.77 times. In order to make the citation performance of papers comparable over field and subfield boundaries, the different field-specific expected citation frequencies must be related to one another through the use of predetermined reference standards.

Years of experience: 17. Registered at ProZ.com: Aug 2014.
My background is mostly in academic writing, especially in German philosophy, translation theory, and the history of ideas. Because of my background, I am very sensitive to theoretical terminology--whether "humanistic" or scientific.
