Source text - English This is a star exploding in a galaxy 100 million light years away. It is about as bright as a star in our own Milky Way galaxy about 1000 light years away. You see the sun as it was a little over 8 minutes ago, because it takes 8 minutes or so for the light to travel 150 million kilometres. You see even the nearest stars in the sky as they were some tens of years ago, because they are tens or hundreds of light years away.
But if you look at galaxies that are, say, a billion light years away, then basically you're seeing them as they were 1, 4, 9, 11 billion years ago. And encrypted in that light, is information about the expansion rate of the universe as it was 1, 4, 9, 11 billion years ago.
The light spectrum tells us many, many important things about galaxies: like the chemical composition of the stars of which they are made, and whether an object is moving toward you – a red-shift – or away from you - a blue-shift - and also how quickly. And this is somewhat analogous to the audible Doppler effect.
So there's a red-shift and there's a blue-shift, and what Hubble found is that basically just about every galaxy is red-shifted, but more interestingly: the greater is the distance, the current distance of the galaxy, the greater is the red-shift. The farther away the galaxy, the faster it's moving away from us.
The universe is expanding. Space itself, the fabric of space itself is expanding, stretching with time. You can look back in time and trace the expansion history of the universe. Now, to do that, you need accurate distances, and the way astronomers usually do that, is that they find a star, a supernova type 1-A, a white dwarf, similar to what our sun will become in 6 or 7 billion years. This star gathers material from a companion star and reaches an unstable mass at which it explodes. Most of these stars explode at about the same mass, in the same way, and so they reach the same true brilliance, the same power, and you can use them in a sense as reference points: standard candles.
There's been two teams looking for distant type 1-A supernovae, in order to trace the expansion history of the universe. The one I've been most closely associated with is the HIGH-Z, or high red-shift supernova search team led by Brian Schmidt of the Australian national university. The other one is the supernova cosmology project led by Saul Perlmutter of the Lawrence Berkley lab. Working separately, analysing all the data on their own, both teams arrived at the same conclusion: that the universe's expansion was, and still is, accelerating. That as we speak, distant galaxies are retreating farther and farther away from us. We were trying to measure the rate of slowing down of the universe, and instead we found that it's speeding up. The universe is in fact accelerating, spreading out faster and faster with time.
It suggests a kind of cosmic anti-gravity, accelerating the expansion of space.
Shortly after the development of the general theory of relativity, Einstein introduced the cosmological constant, because he realised that in his general relativistic universe, things should attract each other. Einstein figured that the universe should be collapsing in on itself, because everything should be gravitationally attracting everything else. The cosmological constant suggested that the empty space is not empty after all. It has some sort of an energy, an energy of the repulsive variety
that balances out the attractive forces of gravity: this is what we call today dark energy. A force that pushes galaxies apart.
What will be the fate of the universe? Some say the world will end in fire, some in ice. Well, if the dark energy remains repulsive forever, then its quite clear that the universe will expand forever. The stars we see at night, the clusters of galaxies that light up the darkness of the sky will be whisked away to distances which make them too faint for us to see.
