How men feel about
ED and BPH symptoms
ED typically has a greater impact on men than BPH because it makes them question their virility and masculinity.
Men perceive symptoms of BPH as an unpleasant but unavoidable sign of aging.
Men can become very frustrated with dealing with urinary symptoms. With increased symptoms, the level of bother and inconvenience also increase for both the man and his partner
Partners are impacted (disrupted sleep, daily activities) to the point at which they encourage the man to seek help from his GP. Unlike ED, men are open to sharing concerns over urinary symptoms with partners.
Men are not well informed about and have low awareness of BPH.
Fear of cancer can be a barrier to seeking help.
Newly diagnosed BPH patients generally follow their doctor’s recommendation about how to treat BPH symptoms.
Newly diagnosed BPH patients are often relieved that the diagnosis is not cancer.
Diagnosed patients on “watch and wait” will often follow their doctor’s advice to adjust their lifestyle (eg, drinking fewer beverages at night) until they can no longer tolerate their symptoms.
“BPH doesn’t affect my manhood, but it is truly a pain because it makes me feel older. I hate feeling older.”
“I want to feel like I did before ED – it’s not like I had sex every day, but I could when I wanted to. Even if a romantic moment doesn’t happen every day, I want to be confident in my ability to be ready if and when it does.”
“I want to feel like I did before BPH: confident that bothersome
symptoms of BPH – like needing to ‘go’ frequently or urgently won’t be a source of embarrassment or take up mind space. I don’t want BPH symptoms telling me my highest potential is behind me instead of still ahead.”
