Source text - English EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM OF BC - SELF EMPLOYMENT
Your application for assistance must be approved by the EPBC contractor before you commence.
You must have completed the Mandatory Self-employment Orientation and Assessment service.
You must have your business concept approved by the Self employment review committee.
It is important to note that you are not eligible for the Self-employment service if you have started your business prior to making this application.
To be eligible for support for Self-employment under the Employment Program of BC you must be an unemployed worker, a legally entitled to work in British Columbia, and be,
1) an EI client, which means, an unemployed person who at the time of making this application:
(a) is an individual for whom an employment insurance benefit period is established under the
Employment Insurance Act (EI Act); or
(b) had an employment insurance benefit period under the EI Act that ended within the previous 36months; or
(c) had an employment insurance benefit period under the EI Act established for him or her within the previous 60 months; and
(i) was paid parental or maternity benefits under the EI Act,
(ii) subsequently withdrew from the labour force to care for one or more of his or her new-born children or one or more children placed with him or her for the purpose of adoption, and
(iii) is seeking to re-enter the labour force; or
(d) received “provincial benefits” under a “provincial plan”, as those terms are defined in section 76.01 of the Employment Insurance Regulations made under the EI Act, within the previous 60 months, and
(i) if not for the provincial benefits paid under the provincial plan, would have been entitled to receive benefits under sections 22 or 23 of the EI Act, and would have had a benefit period established for that purpose within the 60 months period,
(ii) subsequently withdrew from active participation in the labour force to care for one or more of his or her newborn children or one or more children placed with him or her for the purpose of adoption, and
(iii) is seeking to re-enter the labour market, or
2) a Client with a disability, or
3) a BCEA recipient who has a Persons with Disability designation, or
4) a BCEA recipient who has a Persistent Multiple Barriers to Employment designation
NOTE: Only EI Clients are eligible for living supports for the Self-employment service
Proof of Personal Investment
You must provide evidence of a personal investment in your Self employment venture. This investment must equal a minimum of 25% of the total of your financial support you receive. For example, if you are an Active EI claimant the 25% would be based on the amount of EI Benefits plus the financial support provided by the EPBC Contractor.
Example: The applicant receives $300/wk in EI Benefits, which would be a total of $14,400 for the 48wks of the SE. The applicant must contribute a personal investment of $3,600 (equal to 25%) in cash or in kind.
The following examples could be considered as proof of investment:
1) a bank statement indicating available funds for the proposed venture;
2) evidence of a loan or line of credit;
3) proof of ownership of equipment or materials that will assist you in your business.
