English to Spanish: The Marshmallow Test. General field: Medical Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English In 1970 Stanford University professors conducted a study at the Bing Nursery School on the campus. The purpose of this study, which became known as the marshmallow test, was to understand the control of deferred gratification, and more than six hundred children participated in the experiment. Children were placed in a room where there were no distractions, except for a treat of their choice - a marshmallow, cookie, or pretzel - placed on, a table.
The children could eat the snack right away; however, if they waited fifteen minutes without giving in to the immidiate urge, they would be rewarded with two snacks. Some children ate the marshmallow immediately; others delayed for five or six minutes. Only one-third were able to earn the reward.
The researchers followed the participants for twenty-five years, and the ones who had the discipline to resist eating the marshmallow became the most successful in life.
