My professional background is in academia, as lecturer and researcher. I have worked on a three-year bilingual research project at the University of Exeter, and have edited a volume of conference proceedings. I also contribute to a University-hosted website dedicated to rare German texts and have lectured in translation studies at the University of Durham.
Most recently, I completed a monograph on German late nineteenth-century society, history and literature, a project which honed my writing, editing and proofreading skills alongside the translation of many German primary sources. When it comes to translating complex texts in particular, I am keenly aware of the subtle impacts which even slightly different linguistic choices can produce and I think writing skills are hugely important in translation projects if the target text is to sound natural.
I am now working on the translation of rare German prose fiction into English and building up specialisms in cultural tourism and legal translation alongside.
Having worked as a musician for many years, I also have experience working for a German music publisher, for whose website I deliver occasional projects.
