Source text - Persian (Farsi)
| Translation - English O Soul! What for are you lingering so long in the “strangers’ land”?
Come back from this exile! How long will you be dispersed?
I sent you a hundred letters; I showed you a hundred pathways;
You either do not know the way, or do not read the letter.
If you do not read the letter, the letter itself will read you;
And if you do not know the path, you will know in the claws of the path.
Come back as in that prison no one knows your value,
Do not sit with the stone hearted, as you are a jewel of this Mine.
O you who have escaped from the heart and soul, and washed your hands of them;
You, who have fled from the world’s snare, come back as you are of falcons’ flock.
You are both water and river, and seeking water as well;
You are both lion and gazelle, and better than these as well.
How far is it from you to the soul? Are you more peerless a beauty or the soul?
Are you intermingled with the soul, or are you a ray from the soul of the Soul?
You’re the moonlight at night; you are sugar and sugar candy in the lips.
O Lord! Such a One as you are! O Lord! You are the Prodigy of the lords.
At any moment from you elegance and beauty, and from us heart and soul and head,
Trade is fairer this way: delightfully you give (the former) and take (the latter).
Dying of your love, we are melting down like sugar,
Having poison from your hand, as you are the fountainhead of life.
