Professional practices Joe France endorses's Professional Guidelines.

I'm a young freelance translator with bags of qualifications, experience and ambition.

Having started my studies with an MA (Hons) in French and German at the University of Edinburgh in 2011, I attended the prestigious ISIT translation college in Paris for an exchange semester, which is where my passion for translation really began. In 2015, I was awarded a First Class degree with distinction in spoken French and spoken German.

I moved straight on to a postgraduate MSc in Translating and Interpreting at Heriot Watt University, and graduated with Merit (2:1), having achieved high marks throughout the year and first-class marks in all translation courses.

I have always believed in the value of hard work - an ethic I've applied from my part-time jobs as a teenager to my professional practice as a freelance translator.  I worked in-house for around 5 months in 2016 before going freelance. That experience showed me the steep learning curve involved in putting theoretical knowledge into practice and afforded me invaluable experience of practical issues of scheduling, organisation, CAT tools and industry standards.

My professional experience centres around three main topics: corporate and official documentation, journalism and marketing. Some examples of recent projects (client names redacted for confidentiality reasons, due to NDAs etc.) include:

  • QM documentation for a specialist translation agency, with ISO-specific terminology
  • partnership agreements and articles of association
  • web content for a German association that promotes the sciences and supports gifted and talented students
  • dozens of press releases for construction, logistics, real estate, investment and pharmaceutical companies
  • a translation of Oliver Breda's walking guide to Madeira, originally published by Michael Müller Verlag, published in English by Trailblazer Publications (
  • two websites for German-speaking plastic/aesthetic surgeons
  • articles for in-house magazines for companies in various industrial sectors, including a leading European civil engineering firm and a prominent German research organisation, plus a whole host of press releases for various companies and institutions
  • a French government directive on the processing of thermosensitive flexible endoscopes
  • documentation, employee manuals/regulations and correspondence for a prominent German research organisation
  • real-estate purchase agreements and official documentation, e.g. land registry entries
  • course outlines and descriptions for the Architecture department of a specialist German university
  • websites for French, German, Swiss and Austrian tourist agencies / hotels
  • safety documentation and manuals for engineering and logistics firms
  • processing and procedural documentation for a series of engineering, manufacturing and logistics firms

In every project, I combine comprehensive background research with precise use of terminology and a natural, fluent use of English. I always pride myself on the quality of my work, and check my translations thoroughly and repeatedly to ensure they are both accurate and idiomatic representations of the source text.

I never accept a project I can't translate perfectly. I'm aware of my abilities but also my limitations, and apply this philosophy to every project. If you have a specific project in mind, or would like to discuss a looser, long-term collaboration, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you!
