Source text - Latvian 1949. gada 10. oktobrī ieraudzījām Kanādas krastu. Īstenībā, ko mēs domājām esam Kanādas krasts, bija Antikostas sala. Gaiss bija stindzinoši dzidrs un vēss. Tad pa Sv.Labrenča upi līdz Kvebekas pilsētai. Tajā laikā šeit dzīvoja kādi 50 tūkstoši, gandrīz visi francūži. Pirmais iespaids nebija tas patīkamākais. Krita acīs telefonu un citādi vadi uz
neizskatīgiem un līkiem koka stabiem. Izstaigājam
pilsētu, aizgājām līdz cietoksnim, apstaigājām apkārt, iekšā netikām, jo šoreiz neviens kabatas
naudu nebija iedevis.
| Translation - English On 10 October 1949, we caught our first glimpse of the Canadian coast. Actually, what we thought was Canada, turned out to be Anticosti Island. The air was bracingly clear and cool. We continued along the St. Lawrence River to Québec City, which had about 50,000 inhabitants at the time, most of them French. My first impression was not the best. The telephone lines and other cables strung on unsightly and crooked poles were an eyesore. We walked through the city, went up to the fortress and walked around it, but we couldn’t get in, since nobody had given us any pocket money this time. |
