Source text - English “Olofsson obviously hacked the computer system,” Alec went on, stating the obvious. “Clever: you don’t bombard the Maginot Line, you go round it.”
“Yes, yes,” Guieysse said. “I’ll tell you what’s likely to happen now. There’ll be high-level contacts between your government in London and the Monaco National Council. The end result will be that we agree to overlook the fact that you’re spies, and you condone the fact that we let Westmere go. Then you’ll be released. But not for some time. Meanwhile, Westmere could be dead. Sad, but it’s out of everyone’s hands. He should have ‘spilt the beans’, as the Americans say, when he had the chance.”
“If everyone in Monaco knows we’re spies,” Phyllis said, “our careers are effectively at an end. Which is a shame,” she added, “but at least we’re not lying lifeless in some gutter. There are worse fates for intelligence officers.”
“And once it becomes generally known who we are,” Alec said, “we can put it on our CVs. We can go into teaching or become daycare assistants.”
Mordred shook his head. He couldn’t believe this was happening, especially the way Phyllis and Alec were treating it as a done deal. “Everyone in Monaco won’t know we’re spies,” he told them. “And Westmere won’t be dead.”
