Source text - English Delegates from forty-four nations met in the New Hampshire resort of Bretton Woods in July 1944 to construct the postwar international economic order. When they left three weeks later, they had designed
the constitution of a global system that would last for more than three decades. The system was the brainchild of two economists: the towering English giant of the profession, John Maynard Keynes; and the US Treasury official Harry Dexter White.* Keynes and White differed on many matters, especially where issues of national interest were at stake, but they had in common a mental frame shaped by the experience of the interwar period. Their objective was to avoid the upheavals of the last years of the Gold Standard and of the Great Depression. They agreed that achieving this goal required fixed, but occasionally adjustable, exchange rates; liberalization of international trade but not capital flows; enlarged scope for national monetary and fiscal policies; and enhanced cooperation through two new international agencies, the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (which
came to be known as the World Bank).
Keynes and White’s regime proved remarkably successful. It unleashed an era of unprecedented economic growth and stability for advanced market economies, as well as for scores of countries that
would become newly independent. The system was eventually undermined in the 1970s by the growth of speculative capital flows, which Keynes had warned against. But it remained the standard for global institutional engineering. Through each successive upheaval of the world economy, the rallying cry of the reformers was “a new Bretton Woods!” In 1952, a Columbia University economist named William Vickrey proposed a new pricing system for the New York City subway. He recommended that fares be increased at peak times and in sections with high traffic, and be lowered at other times and in other sections. This system of “congestion pricing” was
nothing other than the application of economic supply-demand principles to public transport. Differential fares would give commuters with more-flexible hours the incentive to avoid peak travel times. They would allow passenger traffic to spread out over time, reducing the pressure on the system while enabling even larger total passenger flow. Vickrey would later recommend a similar system for roads and auto traffic as well. But many thought his ideas were crazy and unworkable.

Source text - English Even for those of us who can’t remember where we last put our keys, life offers indelible moments. Some are public events. If you are as old as I am, one may be the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated (freshman in college, playing pickup basketball in the college gym). For anyone old enough to be reading this book, September 11, 2001, is another (just getting up, listening to NPR, trying to make sense of it).
Other events are personal: from weddings to a hole in one. For me one such event was a phone call from Danny Kahneman. Although we speak often, and there are hundreds of calls that have left no
trace, for this one I know precisely where I was standing. It was early 1996 and Danny had called to share the news that his friend and collaborator Amos Tversky was ill with terminal cancer and had about six months to live. I was so discombobulated that I had to hand the phone to my wife while I recovered my composure. The news that any good friend is dying is shocking, but Amos Tversky was just not the sort of person who dies at age fifty-nine. Amos, whose papers and talks were precise and perfect, and on whose desk sat only a pad and pencil, lined up in parallel, did not just die.
Amos kept the news quiet until he was no longer able to go into the office. Prior to that, only a small group knew, including two of my close friends. We were not allowed to share our knowledge with anyone except our spouses, so we took turns consoling one another for the five months that we kept this awful news to ourselves.

Source text - English We measure everything at work except what counts. Numbers are comforting—income, expenditure, productivity, engagement, staff turnover—and create an illusion of control. But when we’re confronted by spectacular success or failure, everyone from the CEO to the janitor points in the same direction: the culture. Beyond measure and sometimes apparently beyond comprehension, culture has become the secret sauce of organizational life: the thing that makes the difference but for which no one has the recipe.
The paradox of organizational culture lies in the fact that, while it makes a big difference, it is comprised of small actions, habits, and choices. The accumulation of these behaviors—coming from
everywhere, from the top and the bottom of the hierarchy, from inside and outside of the company itself— creates an organization’s culture. It feels chaotic and yet, at the same time, is susceptible to everything anyone does.
This represents both a curse and a blessing. For leaders, the curse lies in the sense that culture emerges of its own volition—not just beyond measure but also beyond their control. We may not be able to
measure culture but we can measure the high rate of failure for programs aiming at culture change; that stands at around 70 percent. So the idea emerges that culture is elusive, hard to manage, impossible to command.

Source text - English In his engaging new book Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, to be published this December by Basic Books, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang argues that respite is an essential component of both productivity and creativity. Pang, a senior consultant at Strategic Business Insights and a visiting scholar at Stanford University, draws on biographical accounts of famous artists and scientists and a trove of psychological studies to make his case, exploring the benefits of sleep, naps, play, sabbaticals and exercise. Contributing editor Ferris Jabr, who wrote “Give Me a Break” for our special workplace package in this issue, spoke with Pang to learn more about the importance of giving rest and relaxation the respect it deserves.
What was the inspiration for the book?
It got started when I noticed a paradox in the lives of some really creative people: people like Charles Darwin, Stephen King, Maya Angelou, who are obsessed with their work. But when you look at how many hours a day they spent working, it's a surprisingly small number. Living in Silicon Valley and growing up in an era that assumes overwork is the norm, the idea that you could go in the opposite direction and yet still do really amazing stuff was really compelling. I started to think that maybe the secret had to do not just with how they work or their innate intelligence but also with the way they rested. What I found is a community of people including scientists and artists and authors who follow this pattern of working very intensively a few hours a day and then resting deliberately in various ways. Rest is something we all know how to do naturally, but it’s also something we can treat as a skill.

چه چیز الهام بخش نوشتن این کتاب بود؟
زمانی این کار را شروع کردم که متوجه تعارضی در زندگی برخی افرادِ حقیقتاً خلاق شدم، افرادی مثل چارلز داروین، استفن کینگ و مایا آنجلو که دل‌مشغولِ کارشان بودند. ساعتِ کارِ این افراد در روز به حدی حیرت آور اندک است. این ایده که می‌توان آن قدرها کار نکرد ولی باز هم کارهای فوق‌العاده‌ای انجام داد به شدت مرا مجذوب خود کرده بود؛ به خصوص که من در سیلیکون وَلی و در روزگاری بزرگ شده بودم که زیادکاری در آن اَمری عادی است. به نظرم آمد که رازِ این موضوع نه فقط در نحوه‌ی کار کردن آنها، یا هوش ذاتیشان که در نحوه‌ی استراحتشان نیز نهفته است. آنچه من یافتم مجموعه‌ای از افراد شامل دانشمندان، هنرمندان و نویسندگان بودند که همگی از یک الگوی کاری خاص پیروی می‌کردند. این الگو شامل چند ساعت کارِ فشرده در روز و سپس استراحتِ حساب شده به اَشکال مختلف بود. استراحت چیزی است که همگی به صورت طبیعی می‌دانیم چطور انجامش دهیم، با این حال می‌توانیم آن را به چشم یک مهارت نیز ببینیم.
