General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - Polish To jeden z paradoksów.
Pisanie późnego Słowackiego staje się machiną zagarniającą w swój obręb różne teksty kultury, poddającą je reinterpretacji, i wytwarzającą niełatwą w odbiorze konstelację znaczeń – nowoczesną mitologię, język nowoczesnej duchowości. Słowacki przecież pragnie poznać prawdę, jedyną i ostateczną.
To wiem.... więc kiedy ogniste bałwany
Z łon wyrzucały straszne lewiatany,
Gdy Duch przez pierwsze męczeństwo
Natury się do Boga przedzierał....
Gdy łono ziemi otwierał....
I z ogniami rzucał skały,
Przechodząc we śnie przedwstępne żywoty,
Do Boga idzie jako anioł złoty.
Trzeba postawić to pytanie
Edytorzy ponadto zmierzali do – dobrego!
Podkreślam ten fakt, bowiem w utworze zostają one przywołane i świadomie złamane.
Polska teologia polityczna
W XIX wieku, w epoce, w której tryumfuje realna polityka – jej skutkami są m. in. rozbiory i kolejne klęski powstań – Polacy często konstruują swoje projekty polityczne, będące projektami wyzwolenia i zaprowadzenia odpowiedniego ładu społecznego w ramach teologii.
Tertio. Dowiodę, że odtąd ta sprawa
Przez odebranie tu duchowi ciała
I przez wzrost tamtych — we krwi zatrzymała,
A stąd ponosi swoje wielkie szkody
Sam Bóg.... a na to pokażę dowody
Straszne… przez żaden sąd nieodepchnięte —
Ciała szlachetne — a z szubienic zdjęte —
Duchy szlachetne.... a skalane błotem,
Sam zdaje się niezdolny, wbrew własnym deklaracjom i odebraniu stwórczych kompetencji Bogu (to przecież duch tworzy formy), do uprawomocnienia swojej misji.
Heroizm
I złamiesz świat… i pójdziesz wbrew
Wojskami mar… przeciwko ciał,
I będziesz myśl… przemieniał w krew....
Nam dawał moc — i od nas brał,
I będziesz król… lecz będziesz sam....
Powinien tworzyć formy i niszczyć je, ofiarowywać swoje dzieło i w ten sposób przekraczać wszelkie ograniczenia, panować nad nimi.
Ironiczny kontrapunkt
Realizuje się on niejako ponad człowiekiem, podporządkowując go rozwojowi ducha.
Ach, to ten… patrzcie… go..... słowami szczypie,
A niegdyś w pierwszym czerwonym polipie
I mój płynący wóz srebrnym delfinem
Oblał się cały… jasnym karmazynem
Krwi… co na piękne wód błękitnych łono
Pierwszy raz twarzą ciemną i czerwoną
Wyszła… On to jest.... jeszcze dziś go widzę,
Translation - English This is one of the paradoxes. It would seem that we know everything about Słowacki’s Samuel Zborowski.
The number of academic publications and analyses devoted to the text is quite impressive. The drama has been staged many a time, and the main protagonist reappears as the subject of discussions. However, it should be born in mind that the title of the drama, which defines its meanings and interpretations, was not created by the poet, but by the editors. The form of the text provokes controversies as well, and the date of its creation remains unknown. It seems that a detailed study of the text raises a lot of unanswered questions. However, regardless of the problems, Samuel Zborowski is undoubtedly an important text. Maybe even one of the most important texts associated with the issue of freedom in Polish literature. The drama is also important for the Polish theatre, yet the question whether the theatre has understood the text remains unanswered. Let us start with the origins of the text.
Słowacki’s late work
1841 marks the beginning of a new period in Słowacki’s artistic life; another important moment occurred in 1844/1843? when Słowacki wrote “Genesis from the Spirit” (“Genesis z Ducha”) that created an intellectual basis for the poet’s late work. Słowacki changes from a critical writer, and co-creator of trends in the Polish romanticism that focused on the disappointment with and the “disenchantment” of the world, into an author who creates and regains myths. He sends a message that is supposed to allow for understanding of the space, history, humankind, and destiny. This message has, or rather desires to have, political power, and is rooted in a religious experience, or rather only desires such rootedness. This message attempts to create such roots. .
Słowacki refers to mythologies of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Christianity, and the cultures of the North. It is visible also in Samuel Zborowski in which Valkyries talk about Christ, and Lucifer debates with Amphitrite. The poet indicates that the hierarchy that exists in the world of mythological beings reflects the hierarchy of the corresponding cultures and their understanding of the spirit. The Biblical references seem to be the most important, though it is worth mentioning that the poet invalidates the concept of hellinconsistent with the vision of universal salvation. However, he willingly uses the imagery taken from the Apocalypse of Saint John. Słowacki considers Christ to be a role model for humanity. The mythological message is completed with the findings from the fields of philosophy and science, as well as allusions to various literary works; Samuel Zborowski, for instance, includes the 19th-century evolutionism. The late works of Słowacki contain elements of various texts of culture that undergo reinterpretation and, as a result, create a complex constellation of meanings: modern mythology and the language of modern spirituality. Not without reason the poet was often described as the postmodernist writer avant la lettre, though, his “postmodernism” is best visible in the sphere of poetics. Słowacki desires to find the only and the ultimate truth.
The poet included the foundations of the constructed message in the “Genesis from the Spirit.” Researchers referred to it as a system, but I do not consider it to be an accurate interpretation of the new faith, to use Słowacki’s words. As suggested already by the title, this faith was based on one principle: everything has spiritual nature and nothing exists only for the sake of materialism. The poet is convinced that the death is an illusion, and the existence is a chain of metamorphoses, subsequent incarnations, that are accompanied by work, creativity, and development. The creation and destruction of forms attest to the power of the spirit. There is no place for the original sin in Słowacki’s concept, but the sin is perceived as procrastination at work. Słowacki writes that the spirits that existed at the beginning of the creation decided to create the world out of free will and love (one of the most important creative spirits is the global spirit by the name of Lucifer from Samuel Zborowski).
In the “Genesis from the Spirit”Słowacki announces a work on history, that is “The Spirit King” (“Król Duch”). Samuel Zborowski is a figure that appears in both poems. He delivers the lecture on spiritual history of cosmos taken from “Genesis from the Spirit”and combines it with the fragment of the history of Poland. By doing so he enters the sphere of eschatology covering the whole world history, from its beginning to its end. In the poem the fate of Poland turns out to be the fundamental issue related to the universal salvation. At the time of Samuel Zborowski, Poland was to lead the spiritual development and create new forms for the spirit. The death of the rebellious nobleman ceased this leadership.
Compulsion to write
After 1814, Słowacki writes in an extraordinary way. Nowadays, discussing Słowacki’s mysticism does not bring us any closer to capturing the phenomenon of his work. The poet creates gnosis, a message based on knowledge and on a specific epistemology. Undoubtedly Słowacki is still a poet for whom the language is especially significant. The author of Samuel Zborowski dreams about a word that will reveal all the secrets and have the salvific function.
The information about Słowacki’s vision that he had in 1845 may be the key to understanding of his late writing. After an abrupt awakening, Słowacki was gazing at the sky over Paris and he saw, or wanted to see, the face of Christ in the moonlight. This experience triggered great excitation and desire to confirm his views, but it also resulted in frustration caused by the fact the vision was so short and unclear. His short grim note that reads “so little” confirms his dissatisfaction. This statement gave rise to the compulsion to write which was to compensate for the gap between what was seen, what could have been seen, and what was wanted to be seen directly, face to face, not through the mirror and not in secret, as Saint Paul, an important figure for the poet, wrote.
Słowacki’s preserved manuscripts indicate that he was under compulsion to write – even though at that time the process of writing seemed to be problematic for him. He also desired to have his words rooted in the word of God. The notes taken by the poet during this late period are full of overlapping and crossed-out passages written in a shaky handwriting. These passages are fragmentary drafts (apart from the already mentioned “Genesis from the Spirit” and the first rhapsody of “The Spirit King”). The poet’s writing is convulsive, epiphany-like, full of meanings, and it moves into different directions. The author of Samuel Zborowski claimed that words he used came from the spirits. This is how the galaxy of late Słowacki’s writing takes its form. This is the huge fragment that desires to become the great wholeness but cannot fulfil this desire.
The gap between what is desired and what exists, gives rise to the creation of the performative dimension of Słowacki’s work. The poet often highlights the causative character of the word and associates it with godly Logos. In Samuel Zborowski, this causality is seen in the creation of reality where the poet’s word calls the reality into existence rather than describes its previous state. One of the central characters of the drama is Lucifer, a spirit acquainted with history and creation, who influences the events in history and in the drama. He establishes himself in the words and disappears after uttering the last word during the trial between Zborowski and Zamoyski. This is how he changes his identity and becomes the global spirit, Bukary, the Advocate.
Samuel Zborowski has always caused problems
Kleiner&Co publishing house decided to offer the readers a text that could be relatively realistic and at the same time understandable and appreciated for the resemblance to well-known aesthetic and dramatic forms (such an enterprise required a proper introduction). However, Słowacki’s work was still very difficult for both readers and interpreters. Let us take a look at the most problematic fragments of the drama.
The problems can be divided into two groups: problems connected with the dramatic form – the author wrote the text significantly different from the ones we are used to, and even the editors’ interventions do not make this difference less conspicuous; and problems pertaining to the meaning of particular scenes. Already the opening scene of the drama (it should be remembered, however, that it is unfinished) Eolion’s monologue (?) is problematic. Similar situation occurs in the case of the scene in which the footbridgebreaks down while Heliana (Atessa, the fisherman’s daughter, Dyana) and Elion (Helion) are on it, and finally in the scene in which Me replaces Bukary (Lucifer).
The close reading of the available fragments of the drama may lead to a conclusion that the opening monologue cannot come from Eolion. Eolion and Heliana belong to “God’s beloved,”to the Church represented by Christ. The creation of the church changed the relation between God and the spirit, and hence the rebellion of the spirit and his announcement of finding salvation against the new rules. Therefore, following the logic of the drama and other works by Słowacki, the opening monologue can be given only by Lucifer, who appears in the poet’s other works as a global spirit. The spirit says:
That the blessing derives from blood
I know it…so when the fiery billows
Expelled terrible leviathans
When the Spirit waded to God through…
The first martyrdom of nature and
Opened the heart of the Earth…
And cast the fiery rocks
When in the stormy sky
Thunders replied to
The Spirit who was coming to you
In the sky I saw the rainbow of
Covenant between you and me…
This mysterious fragment reveals the characters’ problems with identity, as well as the lack of correlation between the spiritual and the bodily. It turns out that the spirits can inhabit human bodies and speak, act and adopt new roles through them. The bodies seem to be deprived of meaning, although the spirits use them to accomplish certain goals. The body is the main tool used by the spirits as it allows them to experience the suffering that Słowacki considers to be valuable.
Lucifer admits that he took the form of the footbridge that breaks under Eolion and Heliana on their way back from the mountains with the message they have discovered. This broken footbridge remains intriguing because of the Lucifer’s role. Lucifer is, after all, the spirit of the development that encourages other spirits to act, yet in this situation he prevents the development. He explains this case in the kingdom of Amphitrite, and claims that the epiphany of the young characters, their opening to the memory of the previous incarnations and understanding of the past mistakes, although rooted in love would bring the history to an end. As a result not all beings would meet their destiny and realize their tasks, which in turn would prevent their salvation. In Słowacki’s drama, Lucifer turns out to be the advocate of the universal salvation, also including the imperfect beings, that results from the merits of the saved ones. It reads as follows:
Not those who believe in hell
This old cobweb
Somewhere on the flaming
Rainbow… really care for their spirits
But those who show love
Compassion and humility
Those who confess their sins
And are pure
Like nymphs… bright and golden
Only those will be mentioned
In the book of life…
The appearance of Me (Advocate), who takes over Bukary’s (Lucifer’s) role as Samuel’s Zborowski’s spokesman, emphasizes the liquid identity of the characters and the fact that Słowacki includes elements of his personal life in the text, for example by alluding to his mother’s name (“my health” – Salomea), or his eastward travel. The remarks concerning ME refer to the Kleiner’s edition (and editions by other publishers), since this character cannot be found in the manuscript. The manuscript, however, contains other biographical traces. It seems that Samuel Zborowski discusses the issues concerning Słowacki, for instance the recognition of Słowacki’s message, his right for individual artistic career, the use of his own biography within the mythical tale, and probably the power gained from the story:
Blessed is she – who among
The spirits is called – my health
Blessed is she with the grace over her son…
His dream is her song and act.
In her dream going through preliminary lives,
She is going to God as a golden angel.
The question to be asked
How does the understanding of Samuel Zborowski change if we consult Słowacki’s manuscript? It will be impossible to definitely decide whether it is a final version or a rough draft. However, Słowacki’s logic of writing in the galaxy of texts, that is the combination of compulsion and impossibility, makes it safe to ignore the dilemma. There are a few differences between the manuscript and different editions of the drama. These differences greatly impact the interpretation of the text. First of all, Słowacki does not divide the text into acts (apart from one case - Act II). Secondly, the speakers of some utterances are unknown, and, as it has been mentioned, Me does not appear in the manuscript either. Thirdly, the editors introduced the changes to the final version and did not include the fragments that had not been crossed out, at the same time including the fragments that had been crossed out.
Generally speaking, there are two consequences of the editors’ work: 1) the performative character of the drama is reduced as a consequence of its adoption to the requirements of an ‘in a way’ conventional drama with an ‘in a way’ (deliberate repetition) realistic plot – division into acts, roles, and utterances expressed by given characters; 2) the elimination of the significance of the scenes removed from the edited version – the publishers seemed to have been irritated by the fact that these scenes were unfinished, at the same time attaching significance to the scenes that the poet removed from the text.
Moreover, the editors aimed for a peaceful settlement of the trail in the drama ending it with a scene that was to convince the reader about Samuel’s triumph and, reconciliation with Zamoyski that was confirmed by Christ. Słowacki, however, avoids unambiguous solutions and leaves the reader with various inconsistencies concerning both the form and the worldview. His word searches, creates, it never concludes the text.
This is a different drama
It must be remembered that Samuel Zborowski was written by an excellent playwright well-acquainted with the principles of drama and theatre. I would like to emphasize this fact because these principles are recalled and deliberately abandoned in the text. The poet exposes this abandonment and shows his interest in a different and unconventional dimension of the events. Therefore, the elements that could be used in a traditional drama – for example the story of the footbridge, the story of Zborowski, and the fragments relating to the nation’s struggle for freedom, are not directly presented to the readers but told by witnesses instead.
In this way Słowacki demonstrates that his dramatic plot differs from the one in traditional drama, and that one has to know how to see in order to see the true meaning of things.
Also mentioned should be the long and rhetorical monologues that are full of messages and question the causative role of a person as the subject of a given action. The spirits that inhabit human bodies and encourage people to act may serve as an example of such subjects.
In the spiritual dimension, in a way underneath the events typical of a conventional drama, the work leading to salvation takes place. However, there are also events that delay salvation, influence characters’ awareness of the spiritual obligation which is either forgotten, or cannot be recognized. There are three such moments shown by the poet in Samuel Zborowski: the Egyptian story during which Eolion and Atessa commit suicide in order to regain their bodies in three thousand years’ time (consequently they wander aimlessly prioritizing material issues over spiritual ones); Samuel’s story; and the story of the broken footbridge.
In Samuel Zborowski metamorphosis is the prevailing constructive principle and it is accompanied by extraordinary, sometimes surreal imagination. Everything presented in the text, including the characters, events and scenes, can become something completely different at any time. Also, different passages in time and space open and it allows the plot to smoothly fluctuate between ‘in a way’ (again deliberate repetition) authentic reality of “here and now” and the reality of ancient Egypt, the timeless underwater kingdom of Amphitrite, or the trail that takes place beyond time and space in the afterlife. The characters can adopt subsequent identities confirmed with different names.
Polish political theology
In the 19th century, in the era of triumphant Realpolitik which results in the partitions of Poland and subsequent failures of uprisings, Poles often construct their political projects whose aim is to liberate and introduce social order within theological contexts. It is significant that these theological aspects are stigmatised as heretical because they do not function within the official doctrines and institutions. The 19th century is also the time of modernization and the projects seem not to fit in. They rather question it and search for alternative solutions.
They are based on an assumption that the mankind’s goal is not the civilizational but the spiritual progress, and that religion establishes basic symbolic field that determines the fate of human beings and communities, at the same offers a critical approach towards the modern world (the crossed-out fragments contain the manifesto of radical disobedience to any authority that neglects needs of the citizens). In Słowacki’s drama, the project takes the form of a special religion.
The poet’s project is based on the vision of a mighty spirit that creates the reality: nature and history, culture and society. By doing so, the spirit realizes its freedom. Słowacki argues that Poland lies at the centre of the spirit’s case and becomes the next step of the spirit’s development. At the time of Zborowski and Zamoyski the country offered new forms based on freedom and willingness to sacrifice one’s life. The act of beheading of rebellious Zborowski brings this development to a halt and leads Poland to catastrophe. As Advocate says:
Thirdly, I will also prove that this case
Because the spirit was deprived of body
And through the growth of the others – has been stopped in blood
And who suffers a great loss
Is God himself … – and I will show horrific
Evidence… not rejected by any court –
Noble bodies – taken from the gallows
Noble spirits… but defiled in mud
The cross of the Passion, threatening
Even the angels…
Hence the dramatic question addressed to Zamoyski during the trial in the afterlife – where is Poland now, the country that he created with respect to laws and cultural and civilizational values he believed in?
By referring to the Apocalypse, the poet tries to resolve the political problems of the contemporary world claiming that contemporaneity is the time when the prophesy of Saint John is being fulfilled. Słowacki extraordinarily reinterprets the Apocalypse in the crossed-out fragments of the manuscript (the very strong national overtones can be seen in the figure of the woman from Saint John’s vision who is presented as Poland in Słowacki’s text) and introduces the images of Polish cavalry that appear in the sky that symbolize the phantasm of the lost and desired power.
The paradox of Słowacki’s project – well visible in Samuel Zborowski – results from the clash of two policies. On the one hand, it is the policy of freedom set in opposition to law. It is synonymous to stagnation, dependence on the past, and fear of progress. Zamoyski, the representative of this law, is held responsible for the decline of Poland. On the other hand, the poet introduces the policy of the claim for recognition expressed in Lucifer’s monologues and the presence of the institution of the court of law in the drama. The spirit wants a higher instance to recognize his contributions and confirm the salvific power of his path.
Contrary to his declarations and creative competences taken from God (after all it is the spirit that creates forms), the spirit becomes unable to legitimise his mission. Noteworthy is also the fact that Lucifer undergoes significant evolution in the drama: he changes from the spirit whose existence is based on rebellion and suffering to the spirit justified by suffering and love. In other words, there is a need for God who will give his approval to rebellion, or rather God who will recall granting such approval in the past; it may be concluded from Lucifer’s (in the body of Eolion) opening monologue.
Even though everything indicates that the court will do justice to Zborowski and the Advocate (Lucifer), God remains silent. This silence, however, was unbearable for the editors so they decided to suggest some settlement of the case. It remains unclear whether Słowacki had similar intentions, or whether he wanted to highlight the loneliness of the spirit’s fate, his unfulfilled desire for the existence of a higher instance.
Heroism
What resurfaces in the subsequent scenes in Samuel Zborowski is the project of power, the vision of heroic existence, which is free and creative. Such a concept emerges from the opening monologue, in which Lucifer describes his path. Similar messages can be found in the voice of spirits who address Eolion, Lucifer’s autobiographical confession in the kingdom of Amphitrite, and Zborowski’s apologia during the trail. The above-mentioned voice of spirits reads as follows:
And you will break this world…and will be against
Your armies of mares… will be against people
You will turn thoughts… into blood…
You will give us strength – and you will take it from us
And you will be the king – but you will be alone…
So you either go… or break down
Słowacki writes about the man (the form equips the spirit with special abilities to develop and is connected with cognition; it is, however, not available to everybody and therefore condemns the man to aimless wandering and being cheated and abused by spirits) who should consciously shape his fate and overcome the obstacles. The man should create and destroy forms, sacrifice his creation and, by doing so, overcome all the boundaries and limits.
Ironic Counterpoint
Apart from what has been discussed so far, there is also one interesting scene that seems to be taken from Słowacki’s early ironic works (the drama contains more fragments that remind the readers of Kordian, Horsztynski, or Balladyna). It is the scene that takes place between the lecture on genesis philosophygiven by Lucifer in the kingdom of Amphitrite, and the equally important lecture on the history of Poland and salvation presented during the trial that crowns the drama. Bukary (Lucifer’s incarnation) is involved in an ironic dispute on the existence of spirits with naïve and bawdy monks existing in the Antipodes of the great spirit odyssey, and at the same time, according to the notion of the universal salvation, existing within this odyssey (the same scene includes the grotesque replacement of the spirits in the Prince’s body). In this way Słowacki shows the complexity of the world where the sublime meets the trivial.
The incredible
So far the text has discussed different symbolic ordersin Samuel Zborowski that are complex, based on different texts, diversified by endless and fragmentary writing, by the principle of metamorphosis, and by ironic counterpoint. We try to understand them through various cultural contexts, referring to other Słowacki’s texts, even to his system, as it has been mentioned before. However, the analysis of the late Słowacki’s writing with the use of such tools seems difficult, if not impossible.
What the poet writes in his drama and what remains irreducible to cultural contexts, adds somewhat inhuman dimension to the experience of existence. It is realised beyond the man, who is subordinate to the development of the spirit. The world created by Słowacki is permeated by pain, fear, and fundamental weakness which persistently resurfaces on the way to perfection. The Amphitrite’s description of Lucifer’s path reads as follows:
Oh, that is the man…just look… at him… and his snarky comments
And formerly in the first red polyp
Getting his brother on the sea
Blood on blood… net on net
Mud on mud… braid on braid
He put his hands on him many a time
And that is how… the two paupers fought
That the silver faces of my white nymphs
And my carriage carried by a dolphin
Were all covered in… the light redness of
Blood…which appeared for the first time
In the beautiful blue waters…
Here he is… I still see him
As the first brain
Full of red thoughts
Without heart… but with one eye
Looking at his brothers’ suffering
As if he wanted to light the lantern
Lighting up the first… underground torments…
And what is perhaps the most paradoxical in Samuel Zborowski is clash between the trauma of existence and conviction that existence is rooted in the freedom, love, and creativity.

Horizon. A narrow, barely visible line that separates the grey water from the equally grey sky. The line is rising and falling down. I’m doing the same. I’m trying to achieve my balance. My body is retching. Is it because of the movement? Or am I impatient? This is the first time I’ve gone overseas. I’m dressed in a travel costume that I got from my aunt last week. A few days ago I was putting it on in delightful ecstasy of excitement as if I had been putting on my wedding gown. The land I am heading for is like a promised lover. Will I like him? Will he find me attractive? The material has soaked with salt and water. It is wet and cold. It has stuck to my pointed breast and lean arms. Now it is pressing between my thighs. Cheeky and ambiguous. I’m straightening the fabric and flipping stiff strands of hair with my numb fingers. A few minutes before I see him, I am suddenly filled with a feeling of delight. I close my eyes. I open my eyes and see a black line of the shore in front of me. This is my destination. My fate. Europe.

are, what they do, and how they live, would be a very one-
sided experience smacking of fixation and pompousness.’

Isabel ‘When it comes to the English, it is difficult to talk about
trivialities. The Englishman embodies masculine nobility, and
knows that life is not an affectionate romance, but an
unrelenting struggle for existence. In this struggle he likes
using the most beautiful weapon at his disposal, that is, his
mastery of looking down on the others. The Englishman will
never understand Nietzsche, he will never understand
“Resurrection” by Tolstoy, he will never read the decadents’
works, but he will value reason, character and initiative. Let’s
learn to forgive the English for their oddities and their
eccentricities for the sake of their virtues, which, if followed,
may provide our future generation with health and fortitude,
so important for life struggle.’

The choice of a right cigar is extremely important. If it is not

will efficiently put us off smoking. Just like women.
Warburton Gentlemen, I’m not going to get married.
Anna Yes!
Warburton Women bore me.
Daniel How come? Seriously, Lord Warburton? Only women know
how to make our juicier.
Warburton They are all the same. They have the same thoughts,
the same dreams. When they open their mouths, the same
words come out. Me, you, never before, forever. No, thank
you.
Daniel Women are like cigars. They all look similar and they should
make a man happy in a similar way. But each of them has a
different filler and is wrapped differently. I can savour well-
wrapped presidente for three hours, churchill ¬– for one and
a half, and robusto…
Ralph For an hour.
Daniel Exactly! And what’s more, the best cigars can change their
taste at least three times while being smoked.
Warburton How can you recognize them?
Daniel It requires great experience. Some people rate cigars for their
aroma and smell them alternately from the foot to the cap.
Others rate cigars for their firmness by squeezing them gently
below the binder. The most advanced aficionados can rate
cigars just by the texture of the wrapper. I’ve been smoking
cigars for forty years and one glance is enough for me to rate
their quality.
