Magari sono anche convinti che dover lavorare con altre copie di se stesso sia una passeggiata. Chissà che faccia farebbero, se raccontassi a uno di loro che la tua prossima scadenza lavorativa consiste nello sventare la fine del mondo, anzi di tutti i mondi possibili. E in due settimane, se non è troppo disturbo Lu!
Ma cominciamo dall'inizio. Il buon senso sembrerebbe suggerire che a reggere l'universo sia una qualche legge fisica, magari scoperta solo nelle realtà più scientificamente avanzate, oppure la legge di qualche dio ordinatore, se siete tipi spirituali. Invece, secondo la tua esperienza e il tuo addestramento, l'unica forza costante nell'universo è quella dell'abitudine. Va da sé che le Colonne (termine tecnico, niente meno) dell'Universo siano persone come tutte le altre, che abitano una sola dimensione (i suddetti monodimensionali) e hanno uno spiccato senso della routine. Persone come Dom, che da una vita intera prende la prima corsa della metropolitana, alla stessa ora, per le stesse fermate, tutti i giorni. Ecco, Dom è la tua Colonna e tu sei il suo Custode, ovvero l'Agente dell'Ordine preposto a controllare che Dom timbri il cartellino, in tutti i mondi possibili. Ne va della coerenza dell'universo.
In sostanza, passi cinque minuti al giorno con Dom, condividendo una corsa in metropolitana per informarti su come gli vanno le cose e poi passi il resto del tempo a rimuovere tutto quello che potrebbe cambiare la sua routine. Qualche volta t'incontri con i tuoi alter ego, ovvero i Lu che in altre dimensioni stanno alle calcagna di altri Dom, per fare il punto della situazione. A periodi stabiliti è prevista una rotazione: vi date il cambio. Ciascuno di voi passa nel mondo occupato in precedenza da un altro Lu, così che possiate godere della vostra natura di esseri multidimensionali. Questo se credi agli opuscoli d'arruolamento. Il regolamento, invece, è più onesto: l'Ordine proibisce di affezionarsi a una singola realtà, a un singolo ruolo e soprattutto di fraternizzare con gli alter ego di una Colonna. Sì, perché i sentimenti tendono a rendere le persone imprevedibili e il caro, vecchio universo malsopporta le sorprese.
Tutto giusto, tutto logico, matematico perfino. Peccato che in fin dei conti Dom sia l'unica costante nella tua vita: sali in metropolitana, ascolti le sue storie (anche perché è un attimo fare confusione tra una realtà e l'altra, meglio concedere sempre l'iniziativa) e scendi pensando che dopotutto l'universo un senso potrebbe anche avercelo. Sì, Dom è la cosa più vicina a un amico che tu abbia mai avuto e ci vai molto più d'accordo di quanto non faccia con te stesso. A volte ti fai proprio uscire dai gangheri! Invece con lui sembra sempre filare tutto liscio, avete un'intesa speciale e vi bastano quei cinque minuti di viaggio per rinforzare l'idea di conoscervi da sempre. Potrà suonare stucchevole, ma la verità è che ti fa sentire una persona migliore: sei genuinamente interessato alla sua vita e gli auguri davvero il meglio. Se lo merita.
Ora viene la parte sulla fine dei mondi incombente. Dall'ultima riunione è emerso che tutti i Dom hanno in mente di cambiare vita. Un taglio netto alla routine. Niente più corse in metro. Niente più universo come lo conosciamo. In questi casi il regolamento prescrive una rotazione serrata: cambierai una realtà e un Dom al giorno, per convincere il maggior numero di loro a ripensarci. Sarà un vero e proprio delirio.

But first things first. Common sense would suggest that holding the universe together is a job for some law of physics, maybe one that has only been discovered in the most scientifically advanced realities, or the word of some authoritarian god, if you’re the spiritual type. But your experience and training have shown the only constant of the universe to be the force of habit. It goes without saying that the Pillars (a technical term and nothing less) of the Universe are people just like everyone else, living in a single dimension (the monodimensionals you were just talking about), with an outstanding preference for routine. People like Dom, who for a lifetime has been boarding the first subway ride of the day, at the same time, for the same stops, each and every single day. There, Dom is your Pillar and you are its Warden, meaning you’re the Agent of the Order tasked with checking that Dom clocks in in every possible world. The coherence of the universe is at stake.
What you actually do is spend five minutes a day with Dom, share a subway ride with them to check up on things and then employ the rest of your time removing every single obstacle to their routine. Sometimes you meet with your alter egos, the Lus that are stalking other Doms in other dimensions, to assess the situation. There is a rotation in place, set at fixed intervals: you take turns. Each of you goes into the world previously occupied by another Lu, so that you can enjoy your multidimensional nature. Or so the recruiting ads say. The actual regulations are more honest: the Order forbids you from getting too attached to a single reality or a single role, and most of all it abhors fraternisation with the alter egos of a Pillar. Yes, because feelings tend to make people unpredictable and the dear old universe doesn’t have much patience for surprises.
Everything is perfectly sensible, perfectly logical, mathematical even. Pity that, in the end, Dom is the only constant of your life: you get on the subway, listen to their stories (yeah, because it’s easy to lose track of what reality you’re in, so it’s best to give them the opening line) and you get off thinking that the universe may even make sense after all. Yup, Dom is the closest thing to a friend you’ve ever had and you get along with them better than you get along with yourself. Sometimes you really get on your nerves! But with them everything always seems to go over smoothly, you have a special connection and that five-minute ride is enough to reinforce the idea that you’ve known each other since the beginning of time. It may sound corny, but the truth is that they make you feel like a better person: you’re genuinely interested in their life and you really wish them the best. They deserve it.
Now comes the part about the impending end of all worlds. What emerged from your last meeting is that all the Doms are thinking about changing their life. A clean break from the routine. No more subway rides. No more universe as we know it. In these cases the regulations prescribe a close rotation: you’ll change one reality and one Dom a day, to convince the greatest possible number of them to rethink their decision. It will be pure, utter chaos.
