Source text - English What is art? (Russian: Что такое искусство? Chto takoye iskusstvo?) is a book by Leo Tolstoy. It was completed in Russian in 1897 but first published in English due to difficulties with the Russian censors.
Tolstoy cites the time, effort, public funds, and public respect spent on art and artists as well as the imprecision of general opinions on artas reason for writing the book. In his words, "it is difficult to say what is meant by art, and especially what is good, useful art, art for the sake of which we might condone such sacrifices as are being offered at its shrine".
Translation - Albanian Çfarë është arti? (Rusisht: Что такое искусство? Chto takoye iskusstvo?) Është një libër nga Leo Tolstoy. Ky libër u përfundua së shkruari në rusisht në 1897, por për here të parë u botua në anglisht për shkak të vështirësive me diktatorët rusë.
Tolstoi citon kohën, përpjekjen, fondet publike dhe respektin publik të shpenzuar për artin dhe artistët, si dhe paqartësinë e opinioneve të përgjithshme mbi artin si arsye për shkrimin e librit. Sipas fjalëve të tij, "është e vështirë të thuhet se çfarë nënkuptohet nga vetë arti, dhe veçanërisht ç'ka është e mirë, art i dobishëm, arti për hir të të cilit ne mund të falim sakrifica të tilla ashtu siç ofrohen në altarin e tij të shenjtë" [4]
