I have an academic background in Arabic language, literature, and culture (PhD Arabic Studies, University of Texas at Austin 2013). My geographical areas of expertise are Morocco, Egypt, and North Africa; the Levant; the Arab world. My literary translation includes Arabic-English short fiction, novels, poetry, and a medieval epic. I also provide commercial translation (AR>EN-US, specializing in Academic), editing/proofreading (EN), teaching (AR), and consulting. Teaching Arabic to English speakers since 2006. Translating since 2009. Editing since 2014. Business owner since 2017. Website:

My Background: I have been interested in languages and cultures for as long as I can remember. I studied Spanish and French before beginning Arabic. My introduction to Arabic was a summer course at the School for Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. That winter, I moved to Morocco to study abroad for four months. I returned to visit my Moroccan host family and to conduct research for academic projects about once a year for over a decade. I conducted dissertation fieldwork in Morocco for eight months. I lived in Cairo for one year, spending one month traveling independently in Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan (2004-2005). In the course of my PhD program, I studied classical and modern Hebrew, but most of my courses were in Arabic literature and culture, and were conducted in Arabic. I speak, read, write, and comprehend Modern Standard Arabic. I read Classical Arabic, and I am proficient in dialects from three of the four major dialect families: Moroccan, Egyptian, and Levantine (in order of expertise). I am qualified to educate, analyze, conduct research, manage projects, and write both technically and creatively. Let me know if you have a project in mind for me!
