Rome, April 2017 – On the occasion of the exhibition Matrice at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana and the permanent installation in Largo Goldoni of the artwork Foglie di Pietra, both of the artist Giuseppe Penone, FENDI presents the book Giuseppe Penone: Matrice. The volume celebrates and documents with spectacular photographs and drawings both the great exhibition of Giuseppe Penone - still ongoing at the headquarters of the Roman Maison in the EUR district until July 16th 2017 - as well as the studies and the various phases of creation of Foglie di Pietra, the magnificent sculpture which will be installed on May 22nd 2017 in the heart of the historic centre of Rome, opposite Palazzo FENDI.
The exhibition Matrice, organized by FENDI and curated by Massimiliano Gioni, is a unique opportunity not only to admire a selection of historical and other works specifically created for the exhibition by Giuseppe Penone, one of the greatest living sculptors, but also to contemplate the monumental spaces of the ground floor of Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana. The volume Giuseppe Penone: Matrice collects a series of images that offer a personalized guided tour of the exhibition and includes Ripetere Il Bosco, an exclusive interview of Massimilano Gioni to Giuseppe Penone, as well as Extra Muros, a paper that analyses the artworks that Penone has created for public spaces since the 1960s, with pictures documenting the installations in some of the world’s most fascinating cities and places, including New York, Paris and the Versailles Palace.
The volume – of 150 pages - is, furthermore, enriched by a section featuring the sketches, studies and some images of the creation of Foglie di Pietra, an extraordinary new sculpture by Giuseppe Penone and first contemporary artwork permanently installed in the heart of the city of Rome. This initiative has been thoroughly examined in every stage and approved by a mixed jury specially set up, which identified the artist and approved the project, composed by the General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and the Urban Peripheries of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Roma Capitale (the Municipality of Rome) – Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, in agreement with FENDI and Massimiliano Gioni, curator of the exhibition.
With preface by Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO of FENDI, and introduction by Federica Galloni, Director General of the General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, and Claudio Parisi Presicce, Capitoline Superintendent for Cultural Heritage, the volume is edited by Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director of the New Museum of New York and Director of the Venice Biennale in 2013, and published by Rizzoli.

GIUSEPPE PENONE
Giuseppe Penone was born in 1947 in Garessio, Italy.
As one of the youngest artists related to the avant-garde movement of Arte Povera, Penone debuted in Turin in the late 1960s with a series of works in which he used his body and artificial materials to stage interventions in the natural world, particularly with trees and streams.
Soon after, Penone participated in many important expositions in Italy and abroad – including the first exhibitions of Arte Povera, the exhibition Information at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1970) and Documenta 5 in Kassel (1972) – that presented his work in dialogue with other young artists in the first generations of Conceptual Art, Land Art, and other research-based movements of the 1960s and the 1970s.
Penone’s work is distinguished by the attention it dedicates to both the passage of time as measured by organic materials and forms and the communion and the conflict between humans and the forces of nature. In 1969, Penone began a series of sculptures that became his most famous iconographic motifs: rigid and geometric profiles of wooden blocks carved to reveal what appear to be the original forms of tree trunks and branches, as if restoring the previous life of the wood.
The hidden life of materials and the sacredness of nature are central themes in Penone’s work. His sculptures and installations are characterized by a sense of wonder towards the natural world: through a continuous study of the essence of organic forms, the artist’s practice reveals a desire for a sense of belonging that is rooted in “a cosmic communion with nature,” as the artist has described his work.
Since the 1970s, the natural and modest materials of Penone’s works have been progressively compounded by more complex interventions and by the use of precious materials such as bronze and marble. In the series of large-scale trees and sculptures presented in the artist’s exhibitions of the last decade, Penone has achieved a level of refined virtuosity, in which materials and forms chase each other in a simulation game: skin surfaces replicated in marble, tree barks and trunks melted in bronze, trees covered in gold leaf, and drawings realized with acacia thorns are several fascinating examples of Penone’s recent artworks, in which classicism, ecology, and a neo-baroque taste for marvel seem to coexist.
Penone has exhibited in the most important international museums and exhibitions worldwide, including Documenta and the Venice Biennale. His artworks are held in the collections of the most prestigious museums, such as the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna and the Maxxi in Rome and the Castello di Rivoli in Turin.
In 2014, Penone won the Praemium Imperiale, one of the most important awards given to contemporary artists, and in 2013, he became the first and only Italian artist to exhibit in the Palace of Versailles. His recent exhibitions in institutions include the solo presentations at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the MART in Trento and Rovereto, the Nasher Sculpture Centre in Dallas, the Rijskmuseum in Amsterdam and Whitechapel Gallery in London.

Bu sergiler Penone’un Kavramsal Sanat, Toprak Sanatı ve 60’ve 70’lerdeki diğer sanat akımlarının birinci kuşak genç sanatçılarıyla etkileşimde olan çalışmalarını sundu.
Penone’un eserleri organik materyaller ve yapılarıyla yansıttığı zamanın geçişine ve aynı zamanda insan ve doğal güçlerin arasındaki birlik ve çatışmaya odaklanıyor. Bu özellik ünlü sanatçının eserlerini eşsiz kılıyor. 1969 yılında Penone birçok heykel çalışması yaptı ve bu heykeller onun en ünlü ikonografik motifleri arasında yer aldı. Penone, Documenta ve Venedik Bienali’nin de içinde bulunduğu dünyanın en önemli uluslararası müze ve sergilerinde yer aldı. Sanatçının eserleri Londra’da Tate sanat galerisi, New York Modern Sanat Müzesi, Paris Modern Sanat Müzesi, Los Angeles Çağdaş Sanat Müzesi, Paris’te Georges Pompidou Sanat ve Kültür Merkezi, Roma Modern Sanat Ulusal Müzesi ve Ulusal 21. What kind of woman do you think of when you design?
The Etro woman is individualistic, strong and independent. She likes to play with clothes, but she does not take them too seriously. She is not a fashion victim. For her, clothing is a creative expression. There is a sense of freedom when she gets dressed. She follows her whims and enjoys the fantasy, and exoticism that fashion can bring. I design for a woman who is bold and is not afraid of color, or a touch of eclecticism. She loves art, culture and she loves to travel like a new sort of globetrotter. Exotic, eclectic, ironic and she always smiles.
What I am interested in is to work on heritage and the DNA of the brand to develop further its boundaries without really breaking with the past but looking to the future. Making an evolution and not a revolution! I like to play with contrast and to find the right balance between them… a controlled Maximalism.
Can we define your SS17 collection as “Talitha Getty meets Led Zeppelin”? What was the story behind the collection?
It could be… as a symbol of free spirit. The song kashmir by Led Zeppelin perfectly describe the story behind the collection:“Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream. I am a traveller of both time and space...” where a gang of eclectic travellers, a group of free-wheeling, soulful women who dauntlessly explore the most adventurous corners of the world: “En Route to Adventure”.
How is a typical day of Veronica Etro?
I wake up early at 6.30/7, I have breakfast with my kids before school, then I do some running in the park, take a shower and read the news and then I’m in the office. Around 13.30, I have lunch in our showroom kitchen while discussing tasks with other family members then I am back to work till seven. I get home and I check my boys homeworks and check if they are ready for the test and then bring them to bed by 9. I have dinner with my husband and afterwards... film, book or meet friends.
Who is your style icon of all times? Why?
My mum, because she has a traditional, timeless style and yet sophisticated with a very personal touch.
As a designer can you do a retrospective to yourself? What is your biggest satisfaction, when it comes to fashion?
This year it is 20 years (1997-2017) that I started working. My biggest satisfaction is to have still great fun and enjoying myself in creating the collection. My driving force has always been curiosity in life, chasing newness and originality. I love to deal with prints as each season it is like to paint on a blank canvas.
Can you tell us one unforgettable funny story through you fashion life?
The funny thing is that I do not have a fashion life rather I work in the fashion business.
Everything almost became a matter of styling. What do you think about this, especially when you compare it to 80s or 90s fashion understanding?
Today there is more freedom… everything goes. Sometime people ask me: what is the colour for next summer or winter?” I think it is an old way of thinking about fashion. Today it is about expressing yourself, about identity, about customizing and creating your own style, which I think it is a good thing. It is not anymore about giving fashion rules but about feeling free to choose from the proposition.
What are your plans for this summer?
We will fly to our family house in Ibiza with the kids and then planning some hiking in the Suisse Mountains.

ELLE: Tasarımlarınızı yaparken zihninizde nasıl bir kadın canlanıyor?
VERONICA ETRO: Benim için Etro kadını bireysel, güçlü ve bağımsız. Kıyafetlerle oynamayı seven ancak yine de çok ciddiye almayan bir kadın. Moda kurbanı değil. Kıyafet onun için yaratıcılığını yansıttığı bir ürün. Giyindiğinde kendini özgür hissediyor ve kendi heveslerinin peşinden gidiyor, hayal gücünün ve modanın beraberinde getirdiği egzotizmin tadını çıkarıyor. Cesur ve renklerden korkmayan bir kadın için tasarım yapıyorum. Bu kadın sanatı, kültürü ve bir gezgin gibi seyahat etmeyi seven biri. Egzotik, eklektik, ironik ve daima gülümseyen.
Markanın DNA’sı ve kalıtımı üzerine çalışmak önceliğim, böylece geçmişten tamamen kopmadan ancak geleceğe bakarak markanın sınırları daha ileriye taşınabilir. Yenilik getirmek, devrim yaratmak değil! Zıtlıklarla oynamayı ve sonunda iki taraf arasında doğru dengeyi bulmayı seviyorum… bir nevi kontrollü Maksimalizm.
ELLE: 2017 İlkbahar-Yaz koleksiyonunuzu “Talitha Getty ve Led Zeppelin buluşması” olarak tanımlayabilir miyiz? Koleksiyonun ardındaki hikâye nedir?
V.E: Bu koleksiyon özgür ruhun bir simgesi olabilir. Led Zeppelin’in Kashmir adlı şarkısı koleksiyonun ardındaki hikâyeyi tam anlamıyla anlatıyor: “Ah, bırak güneş vursun yüzüme. Ve yıldızlar süslesin düşlerimi. Zaman ve uzay yolcusuyum ben…” Dünyanın en serüvenli köşelerini korkusuzca keşfeden bir grup gezgini ve özgür kadını temsil eden bir koleksiyon: “En Route to Adventure”.
ELLE: Veronica Etro’nun bir günü nasıl geçer?
V.E: Sabah saat 6.30-7 gibi erkenden uyanıyorum. Çocuklarım okula gitmeden önce birlikte kahvaltı ediyoruz sonrasında parkta koşuya çıkıyorum, duş alıyorum, haberlere göz atıyorum ve ofisime gidiyorum. Saat 13.30 gibi showroomda bulunan mutfakta öğle yemeği yerken bir yandan ailenin diğer üyeleriyle iş üzerine konuşuyoruz ve sonrasında saat yediye kadar çalışmaya devam ediyorum. Eve döndüğümde çocuklarımın ödevlerini ve sınava hazır olup olmadıklarını kontrol ediyorum. Saat 9 gibi çocukları yatırıyorum. Eşimle akşam yemeği yedikten sonra film izliyorum, kitap okuyorum veya arkadaşlarımla buluşuyorum.
ELLE: Stil ikonunuz kim? Neden?
V.E: Annem. Çünkü geleneksel, zamansız ve kendine has bir tarzı var.
ELLE: Bir tasarımcı olarak kendiniz için geçmişe dönük bir değerlendirme yapabilir misiniz? Moda dünyasından bahsettiğimizde en büyük tatmininiz nedir?
V.E: Bu yıl çalışma hayatımda 20 yılımı (1997-2017) doldurdum. En büyük tatminim yeni bir koleksiyon yaratım sürecinin halen bana zevk ve mutluluk veriyor olması. Merak, yenilik arayışı ve özgünlük her zaman benim itici güçlerim olmuştur. Baskılarla ilgilenmeyi seviyorum, her yeni sezonda boş tuvallere çizim yapmak gibi.
ELLE: Moda hayatınız süresince unutamadığınız komik bir anınız var mı?
V.E: Bence komik olan aslında bir moda hayatına sahip olmayıp bir moda şirketinde çalışıyor olmam.
ELLE: Artık neredeyse her şey bir stil meselesi haline geldi. Özellikle 80 veya 90’ların moda anlayışı ile karşılaştırdığınızda bu konu hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz?
V.E: Bugün moda anlayışı daha özgür…. Her tarz kabul görebiliyor. Bazı zamanlar insanlar bana: “Bu yazın veya kışın rengi ne?” diye soruyor. Fakat bence artık bu eskide kaldı. Bugün moda kendini ifade etmek, kendi özgün tarzını yaratmaktan geçiyor ve bence modayı en iyi bu şekilde takip edebiliriz. Artık kurallara bağımlı kalmak değil özgün tarzınızı yansıtmak moda.
ELLE: Bu yaz için planlarınız neler?
V.E: Çocuklarla Ibiza’da bulunan baba evine gideceğiz ve sonrasında İsviçre Alplerinde doğa yürüyüşü yapmayı planlıyoruz.
