Landscape and Paradise in Early Medieval Ireland
i. Introduction
The Voyage of St Brendan the Abbot is one of the most famous of all early Irish texts and is the subject of much debate and speculation. Some people believe it describes an actual voyage to the Americas, undertaken by early medieval Irish monks, while others interpret it as a symbolic religious text. Today, I will highlight major strands which connect into your conference theme of landscape and see whether these can throw light on the meaning of the tale.
[slide 2] First, however, I will introduce the text. The Voyage of St Brendan is a Hiberno-Latin narrative which was probably written in Ireland during the second half of the eighth century or, at the latest, towards the beginning of the ninth, although this is open to some debate. It tells of how St Brendan, a prominent early Irish abbot who lived in the sixth century, is called to go on a journey to the Promised Land of the Saints which, the text tells us, can be found in the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west of Ireland. He is accompanied by a crew of monks on his voyage which takes places over seven years. The saint and his companions must overcome temptations before they reach their destination. On the way, Brendan visits islands in the north Atlantic, encounters monks and hermits, celebrates Easter on the back of a whale and meets Judas Iscariot. The landscape in which he travels is at once real and imaginary. The tale explores the best way for an abbot to create, and a monk to live in, the perfect monastic community. The text draws on a rich and diverse literary heritage which may stretch back into the early seventh century.
[slide 3] Today, I wish to examine landscape in the Voyage of Brendan and explore its deeper meaning. To do this, I will explain the importance of Christian views of the world, especially of geography. This will be linked to the development of a religious ideal known as peregrinatio, or exile. In turn I will combine these two elements – Christian geography and religious ideal – and show how they are connected to the real and imagined landscapes of our text.
ii. Classical Geography
[slide 4] Christian writers inherited the Classical geographical tradition. It was believed that the world, or orbis terrarum, was a globe made up of the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. It was enclosed by uncharted waters, oceanus. The globe was surrounded by stars and these, along with the sun and moon, revolved around the earth. The Romans believed that the most civilised peoples lived near the centre of the world, literally the Mediterranean. As one left the centre people became less civilised and the climate worsened. So, for the Romans, geography was not just geography. It gave them a way to interpret the world and assert their superiority as a culture.
This view of the world was the foundation of how most educated Christians thought about the geographical landscape. It was popularised by Chrisian writers such as Augustine in the fifth century, Cassiodorus in the sixth and Isidore of Seville in the seventh. For instance, Isidore’s enormously influential Etymologies drew on it directly. Furthermore, Christians combined the Bible with the Classical inheritance. They put Jerusalem at the centre of the world and they mapped the ethnic divisions of Genesis onto it. Thus, Africa, Europe and Asia were believed to be the home of the descendants of Noah’s three sons, Ham, Japhet and Shem, respectively. The continents were united through pilgrimage to the Holy Places in the Mediterranean. Geography was regarded as important. Cassiodorus, for example, felt that studying it could lead to a greater understanding of God. Furthermore, time was linked with space as Christians believed that they were created together. For them, one of the characteristics of paradise was that it existed beyond time.
There was another factor as well. Christians believed that there might be an earthly paradise, although they debated about its nature and its location. For some it was the Garden of Eden, lost in the east. For others, there was a paradise under the Caucasus Mountains in Central Asia. Usually, this paradise was located to the east but, eventually, many more came to see it as being hidden in the ocean to the west. Like Heaven, time ran differently there; its inhabitants were often imagined as being immortal. It was also seen as an actual physical place. These speculations play a major role in the Voyage of Brendan’s paradise, the Promised Land of the Saints (terra repromissionis sanctorum).
iii. Peregrinatio
[slide 5] It is now necessary to examine what religious ideals influenced the Voyage of Brendan. One of the most important is the concept of peregrinatio pro Christo or Exile for Christ. Pergrinatio was a form of religious renuciation which was inspired by the words of Jesus in the Gospels, telling believers that they should put aside their home place and their family in order to follow God. Originally the term peregrinus meant a stranger but, among the Irish, it came to mean an exile and peregrinatio was a form of exile for the sake of God. A simple definition of peregrinatio would be that it involved a peregrinus ‘pilgrim’ permanently leaving his homeland or home territory to serve Christ in a foreign place. By the seventh century, the Irish regarded an overseas peregrinatio as the truest form of ascetic renunciation and it became the inspiration for many of the Irishmen who left for the Continent and for Britain, men such as Columba the founder of Iona and Columbanus the founder of Luxeuil in Burgundy and Bobbio in northern Italy. It was believed that peregrinatio was a form of martyrdom. We are fortunate in that peregrinatio features in a wide variety of the extant written sources, Irish and non-Irish. It is probably one of the best understood concepts of the early medieval Irish Church.
[slide 6] How does this relate to our tale? First of all, it has been argued persuasively that a whole genre of literature, made up of narratives known collectively as voyage tales, was inspired by the actual historical experiences of peregrini. These tales usually involve the protagonists leaving Ireland and rowing about a multitude of often imaginary islands. They draw on a variety of sources being influenced to some degree by christian apocrypha, and, in a very general way, by classical examples such as the Aeneid and, less directly, the Odyssey. It is worth noting that the earliest voyage tale types are written in Latin and, later, these appear to directly influence the vernacular genre known as immrama (rowings about).
Although there has been a debate about the origins of voyage tales, and their relationship to a genre of otherworld adventures known as echtrai, there is little reason to go into the details. It is enough to say that, while both genres feature adventures in otherworldly locales, the immrama focus on a multiplicity of overseas otherworld islands. These were arguably inspired, at least in part, by Isidore’s discussion of islands in Book XIV of his Etymologies. There, his influential depiction of Ireland is soon followed by a description of the Fortunate Isles. Isidore tells the reader that these were mistaken for paradise by the gentiles because of their natural fertility and bounty. This actualising of an overseas paradise is carried one step farther by Irish writers who present the islands of the ocean as religious and social laboratories in order to explore concepts of monasticism, heaven and hell.
Many critics have sought an historical origin for this defining characteristic. Kathleen Hughes has suggested that voyage tales are a literary reflex of peregrinatio. She shows that it is but a small imaginative leap from its actual practice to the idea that a penitent or peregrinus might be found sailing on the wide western seas. This is strengthened by the fact that some of the earliest influences are monastic. The neat fit is highlighted by the oldest extant references to a type of ‘rowing about’, those of the peregrinus-cleric Cormac, recorded by Adomnán in Vita Columbae. Cormac is portrayed as searching for a terra secreta (secret place) in the ocean where he can fulfil his ascetic vocation. However, there is a major distinction between these examples and the structure of the voyage tales, inlcuding the Voyage of Brendan. These voyages are bound in by a shared point of departure and destination. In other words, the voyager nearly always returns home while the peregrinus was expected to remain an exile.
There are other historical considerations. It has been argued that by the end of the eighth century the Irish pattern of peregrinatio had changed under the dual influence of the Vikings and the ideals of Céle Dé ascetics. The latter are probably the more directly significant, particularly in ideological and theological terms. The Céli Dé, who drew their inspiration from the strict Máel Ruain († 792), were influential right up to the end of the ninth century. They emphasised strict monastic ideals closer to those of stabilitas, often at the expense of peregrinatio. Máel Ruain discouraged pilgrimage overseas and urged that monks should stay in their monasteries and practice an austere lifestyle among their fellow monks, something we find echoed at the end of the Voyage of Brendan. However, the Céli Dé were not unique in their championing of stabilitas. Irish monastic rules, such as the Rule of Ailbe, forbade the monk to leave his monastery in normal circumstances. A widely disseminated emphasis on stabilitas may have meant that the literal journey of the peregrinus, of a Columbanus or Columba, shifted into a quest for the otherworld.
iv. Real Landscapes
All of these elements, geographical, religious and historical, play a role in the landscapes presented in the Voyage of Brendan. For the rest of the paper I want to explore themand see how they relate to the ideas that I have outlined. I am going to concentrate on three types of landscape, the real, the liminal and, finally, the apocalyptic. What do they tell us about the early Irish Church and its beliefs?
[slide 7] It must be emphasised that the island geography which forms the core of the Voyage of Brendan is, actually, real. This is based not only on the physical descriptions, which we will examine in a moment, but also on other supporting evidence. For insance, we know that Irish clerics explored the north Atlantic. The early ninth-century Irish geographer Dicuil gives an important insight into the motivations and accomplishments of Irish clerical voyagers in his Liber de Mensura Orbis Terrae. He describes how Irish clerics sought out the north Atlantic islands in order to live the religious life, in effect a form of peregrinatio. However, the arrival of the Vikings has brought an end to their settlements. Moreover, in a famous and memorable passage, he depicts an expedition of Irish monks to the then unsettled Iceland, dated to around 795 AD. The monks closely observed what they regarded as unusual physical and astronomical data, including the phenomenon of the midnight sun during the Icelandic summer:
...clerics who had lived on the island...told me..that the sun set in the evening...in such a way there was no darkness...and a man could do whatever he wished as though the sun were there, even remove lice from his shirt...Liber de mensura orbis terrae, vii §11
Indeed, when the Norse reached Iceland they retained a memory of previous Irish monastic settlements there, as well as in northern islands such as the Faroes.
[slide 8] This historical landscape of north Atlantic voyaging, inspired by peregrinatio, is fundamental to the Voyage of St Brendan. The use of the real, described in simple direct language, grounds the story and makes it more accessible. I have put a few examples on the slide. For instance, the Island of Sheep and the Paradise of Birds, located beside each other and among other islands, are almost certainly the Faroes. These North Atlantic islands are described in straightforward language as being full of sheep, fish and seabirds. The description is very similar to that offered by Dicuil in his Liber de Menusra Orbis Terrae (vii §15) and this is believed to be a depiction of the Faroes. In fact, pollen evidence, does support the idea that there were Irish religious settlements in these islands before the coming of the Vikings.
Similarly, the image of the crystal pillar, found after sailing across a clear sea, appears to evoke a north Atlantic iceberg and the metereological conditions associated with sighting one. The Island of Smiths, ‘rough, rocky, and full of slag’ seems to be Iceland while the fiery mountain (Nauigatio §24) which was ‘very smoky on top’ is a pretty accurate deptiction of a volcano, although its eruption is put down to demons rather than geology. As you can see, there are very many example of this grounding in the real. I want to focus on one in particular, the Island of Paul the Hermit.
[slide 9] I have put an extract from the text up on the slide:
When they got to the shore they could not find a landing-place because of the height of the cliff. The island was small and circular...There was no earth on it, but it looked a naked rock like flint....
The physical description matches the small isolated north Atlantic islet of Rockall, nowadays most famous because there is a dispute about potential oil and fishing rights there between Ireland, Iceland and Britain. In the text it is located south of the Island of Smiths, which is probably Iceland as we have seen, and north-west of Ireland. This is a very good match for the actual location of Rockall. Once again, a real place, is the inspiration for the maritime landscapes of the Voyage of Brendan.
These maritime landscapes are so convincing that some historians have gone so far as to argue that the Irish reached Greenland by ca. 900 as well as the Sargasso Sea. These suggestions are very speculative, however, and do not have historical or archaeological justification. Indeed, one of the most popular misunderstandings about the Voyage of Brendan, is that it tells how Irish monks reached North America in the sixth century. As we will see, the desciption of the Promised Land of the Saints is enormously symbolic and is highly unlikely to represent America. The real geography of the Voyage of Brendan is firmly rooted in the north Atlantic world of Irish clerical voyages to the Hebrides, Faroes and Iceland. In fact, the Voyage of Brendan is an example of how empirical observations of the North Atlantic fed into intellectual speculations and into explorations that took place in the imaginations of writers. The author of the Voyage of Brendan constructed a narrative that was rooted in actual maritime experiences. However, he wove together actuality with religious concerns. It is a testimony to the skill of the text that so many people still take it literally.
v. Monastic Landscapes
[slide 10] Scholars have long recognised that the Voyage of St Brendan is a monastic text in the broadest sense. In other words, it is not only an ecclesiastical product but is also concerned with the monastic life and its organisation. The text opens with the visit of the monk Barinthus to Brendan’s monastery of Clonfert. Soon after, Barinthus paints an evocative image of the monastery of his son, Mernóc:
...the brothers (monks) came like bees swarming, from their various cells to meet us. Their housing was scattered but they lived together as one in the faith...
The community is described as comprising small individual monastic cells and is very much in agreement with what we know from the archaeological record. As a result, from the very beginning, the reader is presented with what seems to be a realistic portrait of early medieval Irish religious life.
[slide 11] Moreover, the heroes are all monks. But the text goes further. It offers us sustained landscapes of the monastic life. As we have seen, it powerfully evokes Brendan’s community at Clonfert and Mernóc’s monastery near Slieve League in the North West of Ireland. Furthermore, Énda of Aran, an important church founder, plays a role as Brendan’s mentor. Typically of this tale, these real monasteries are compared with ones which are far more idealised and, also, imaginary.
Thus, Brendan visits the community of Ailbe in the course of his voyage. This monastery is inhabited by monks who do not age and who live in perfect harmony with God. The monks may be immortal but there existence is grounded in their practice of a vow of silence and in their simple lifestyle. Even here, the monks live in the type of individual cells that we saw at Mernóc’s monastery. Similarly, the Island of the Three Choirs, where one of Brendan’s monks is accepted into the community, seems less fantastical because the liturgy of its monks is carefully described.
The vocation of the hermit is also a focus of the text. The eremetical strand of monasticism was deeply admired by Irish writers and the famous hermits, St Paul and St Anthony of Egypt, feature on Irish high cross sculpture. Brendan encounters Paul the Hermit, who is inspired by these figures. He is clothed in nothing but his hair and relies on an otter to be fed. The remarkable nature of his life is counterbalanced by the realistic description of his island, at which we have already looked.
Throughout the text, Brendan’s role as abbot, as father to his monks, is emphasised. He is constantly referred to as the holy father (sanctus pater) or venerable father (venerabalis pater). He looks after his monks, leads them in the liturgy and reassures them when they are in danger. When he finally returns to Ireland, the monks he had left there glorify God because the father than they love has returned. This attractive portrait of Brendan is highly idealised, for sure, but it does give us an insight into how the abbot was imagined in early medieval Ireland.
[slide 12] The landscapes in the Voyage of Brendan are also liturgical, a reflection of the fact that it is such a monastic text. The monks’ days are govenred by the daily canonical hours and the recitation of the psalms. The overarching narrative is, in turn, structured around the celebration of the liturgical year, culminating in Easter, the most important feastday in the Christian calendar. This cycle is repeated over the years of the voyage and is clear on even a quick reading of the text. I will give three examples of this theme in order to further explore its significance but, bear in mind, that there are many more instances of it.
My first illustration of the importance of liturgy is the way that the text emphasises the canonical hours of matins, nones, sext, vespers and so on. These were fixed points during the day when monks chanted the psalms. They are referred to constantly in the Voyage of Brendan. However, the high point is surely the celebration of Easter on the Paradise of Birds where the monks chant the psalms at midnight, dawn, mid-morning, midday, afternoon, evening and night, giving us the full monastic day of prayer.
Throughout the tale, Holy Week is emphasised. It was particularly important for early Christians as it culminated with the betrayal, death and ressurection of Jesus. Thus, on the Island of Sheep, which as we saw previously is almost certainly one of the Faroes, Brendan makes a point of celebrating the Eucharist. Furthermore, the sheep are presented symbolically. The monks feast on a ‘spotless lamb’ from the flock which is implicitly compared to Jesus and his sacrifice. The most memorable Easter celebration is that which takes place on the back of Iasconius, the sea creature who is usually identified as being a whale. Brendan sings the mass there and the monks only realise that they are on a living creature when they attempt to cook food by lighting a fire on its back.
These examples illustrate one of the key characteristics of the Voyage of Brendan. The monastic day and the liturgical year are shown as being actualised in the landscape. They are part of it rather than being something which is simply carried out in a church or a monastery. The Voyage of Brendan presents us with an externalisation of the monastic life in north Atlantic locales. The most unusual, of course, is Iasconius. The giant sea creature is a nod to Jonah’s whale as well as to Pliny’s account of a similar fish upon which sailors landed. However, he also provides a deeper symbolic lesson. He is a representative of unfallen nature, where even animals are at one with God’s plan. The presence of Iasconius points towards the deeper concerns of the narrative.
vi. Liminal Landscapes
[slide 13] These are also reflected in what I term the ‘liminal landscapes’ of the Voyage of Brendan. These contain clearly supernatural or religious elements but, like elsewhere, are also presented with a degree of surface realism. In the tale, they are used to show the movement of the voyagers from one state of time or state or being to another. I wish to highlight both processes.
Firstly, I will focus on beings which are in a liminal state. Our first encounter with them is on the Paradise of Birds. As we have seen, scholars who promote the idea of the tale as recording an actual voyage often point towards the realistic description of the island’s landscape. However, it is impossible to separate this from the fact that the birds are far more than they seem. When Brendan first sees them they are perched together on a tree. One of them flies to him, her wings making the sound of a handbell, echoing the monastic call to prayer. She tells Brendan that the ‘birds’ are actaully the souls of beings who were caught up in the Fall of Lucifer from Heaven, although they do not share in his sin. As a result, although barred from Heaven, they are still in God’s presence and they tell the saint that:
We wander through various regions of the air and the firmanent and the earth...But on holy days and Sundays we are given bodies...so that we may stay here and praise our creator (Nauigatio §11)
This passage identifies them as the neutral angels of medieval Christian apocrypha. These beings sided with neither God nor Satan because they were deceived. Later, they side with God, but only after the fall of Satan. The belief in neutral angels was condemned in mainstream Christianity. At the time the Voyage of Brendan was written it was quite uncommon and it is possible that the native Irish image which links ‘bird people’ with the otherworld plays a role here as well. For instane, the Old Irish sagas The Dream of Óengus and The Destruction of Da Derga’s Hostel prominently feature birds of this type. This connection does seem likely as the Voyage of Brendan is rooted in an Irish world. The bird goes onto prophecy to Brendan the length of his voyage (seven years) as well as its ultimate success, showing that the neutral angels now carry out God’s plan.
The imperfect, but still paradisal existence of the neutral angels is contrasted with another example of God’s mercy – the temporary release of Judas from Hell. The voyagers meet him undergoing what appears to be a severe penance on a rock in the ocean:
They found a man, shaggy and unsightly, sitting on a rock. As the waves flowed towards him from every side they struck him even to the top of his head...(Nauigatio §22)
However, Judas reveals that this is a ‘Paradise of Delights’ (paradisus deliciarum) compared to his punishment in Hell. It is a divine act of mercy, given to him on Sundays, during the Christmas and Easter Seasons, and on the feastdays associated with the Virgin Mary. Significantly, this very closely mirrors God’s dispensation to the neutral angels. Both the angels and Judas move through liminal states, the angels from the air to the earth and Judas from the depths of hell to the earth. In both cases theological ideas are given a reality through their realisation in the landscape.
[slide 14] The clearest example of a liminal landscape is that which accompanies the passage from this world into the Promised Land of the Saints. The latter is an earthly paradise but is also the Heavenly Jerusalem, the apocalypic Heaven at the end of time. The Voyage of Brendan begins and ends with this passage between worlds. The story opens with Barinthus’ tale of how he and his son, the abbot Mernóc, travelled from a monastery in the north-west of Ireland to this promised land.
We embarked and sailed, but a fog so thick covered us that we could scarely see the poop of the prow of the boat. But when we had spent about an hour like this a great light shone all around us, and there appeared to us a land wide, and full of grass and fruit. (Nauigatio §1)
Their journey, although much shorter, prefigures Brendan’s very closely as can be seen in the second passage on the slide:
...as the evening drew on a great fog enveloped them, so that one of them could hardly see the other...After the space of an hour a mighty light shone all around them again and the boat rested on the shore...they saw a wide land full of trees bearing fruit...(Nauigatio §28)
Note how the fog, in each instance, is an outward sign that the voyagers are passing from one state of existence ot the next. The move from darkness to light and from the insubstantial (the fog) to the substantial (the land).
vii. Apocalyptic Landscapes
[slide 15] This liminal state is the necessary introduction to the final landscape, that of the apocalypse. By this I mean the appearance of the Heavenly Jerusalem, as described in the Book of Revelations, also known as Apocalypsis—the last book in the Christian Bible. The culminaton of this text, which prophecies the end of time and space as we know it, tells of a new heaven and a new earth with the Heavenly Jerusalem at its centre. It is beyond time and lit by the presence of God. The Heavenly Jerusalem was a powerful image for Christians and is a mainstay of visionary literature to this day. It is also central to the Voyage of Brendan. This text’s two descriptions of the Promised Land of the Saints, at the beginning and at the end, are sustained reimaginings of the Heavenly city onto an island landscape. It leaves no doubt that the island and the city are one and the same. On the slide, I have pinpointed common elements shared by the Heavenly Jerusalem of Revelations and the Promised Land of the Saints in the Voyage of Brendan.
Light is an important component of both places. In Revelations, the Heavenly Jerusalem shines with the light of God (Rev 21:11, 23-5) and has no need of the sun or moon. In the same way, the Promised Land of the Saints is lit by the light of Jesus (Nauigatio §1, §28). The lack of sun and moon indicates that Brendan has moved beyond earthly time into eternity.
This removal of earthly time is shown in the Heavenly Jerusalem by the lack of earthly seasons. Thus, the Trees of Life bear fruit thoughout the year. In the Promised Land of the Saints, Barinthus finds that each plant is in flower and each tree in fruit at the same time. When Brendan finds trees bearing fruit he is told by an angelic messanger that this is always the case. The parallel with the Trees of Life in Revelations is clear. Many Christians believed that seasons were the result of Original Sin in the Garden of Eden. In the Heavenly Jerusalem and in the Voyage of Brendan there is a return to the perfection of Eden. Furthermore, The Book of Revelations empahsises the annihilation of normal time (Rev 10:6 et passim). This too is a feature of the Voyage of Brendan. When Barinthus and Mernóc reach the Promised Land of the Saints they spend what they think is fifteen days there. In fact it is much longer and Barintus sees this as a sign of its holy nature.
Both the Book of Revelations and the Voyage of Brendan emphasise the precious stones of paradise. These stones were the subject of a whole branch of exegesis where they were connected with spiritual virtues. In fact, Brendan is told to bring some back to Ireland with him as evidence for his voyage. More importantly, the angel tells the saint that the island will become known to his successors, many years in the future after the persecution of Christians, surely a reference to the end of the world in the Book of Revelations.
Finally, the Heavenly Jerusalem is described as being divided into the two parts by the River of Life which flows from the throne of God. Barinthus tells Brendan that the Promised Land of the Saints has a river flowing through it from east to west (Nauigatio §1) while Brendan himself sees that it divides the island in two (Nauigatio §28). The saint is unable to go beyond the river as he must await the Final Judgement at which point be will be able to fully enter the Heavenly Jerusalem.
Is it the genius of the Voyage of Brendan that this clearly otherworldy island has so often been taken literally. I will return to this in a moment but, what is the text trying to tell us? Barintus remarks to Mernóc’s monks that they live ante portam paradisi ‘at the gate of Paradise’ (Nauigatio §1). Their monastery is near Slieve League (mons Lapidus) and the journey from it to the Promised Land of the Saints seems short. On the other hand, Brendan travels for seven years. However, he is explicitly told that this is God’s will; he only reaches the island when he and his monks are ready. To do this, Brendan turns eastwards back towards Ireland, rather than travelling further west. So again, the narrative suggests that the island can be found close to the Irish coast. Of course, it is not really a physical island at all, as the tale’s readers would have realised. Instead, they would have understood it in theological terms.
viii. Concluding Remarks
[slide 16] However, it is the genius of this text that it could be appreciated beyond theology. It was very popular on the Continent, being represented in over 100 manuscripts. Moreover, it was adapted into other vernacular languages including early attempts in Middle Dutch (De reis van sint Brandaan) and Anglo-Norman French (Voyage de St Brendan). These adaptations are really new texts. They tend to focus more on action than the Voyage of Brendan and are more fantasical. However, they also helped popularise the notion that the tale, in some way, was a record of a real voyage or contained actual geographical knowledge. As we have seen, the geography of the north Atlantic does, indeed, play a crucial role in the text. But, it was not this which inspired the imaginations of later readers. It was the Promised Land of the Saints. This became conflated with other Irish otherworld islands as well as being inspired by the speculations of Classical geographers. Thus, was born the idea that there was actually a Saint Brendan’s Island to be found in the Ocean to the west of Europe. This, of course, runs contrary to the original tale which explicitly has Brendan sail east, back towards Ireland, in order to reach paradise.
This mythical island was sometimes called St Brendan’s Island or isla de san Borondón and was a mainstay of medieval and renaissance cartography. The island features on the thirteenth-century Hereford World Map (a T-O mappa mundi) off the coast of Africa while the map of the Pizzigani brothers places it just north of the Canaries. By the Age of Discovery it was believed to be located somewhere in the Atlantic, perhaps west of the Canary islands or, further out, beyond the Azores. It was sometimes considered to be the mysterious ‘eighth island’ of the Canaries. Between 1526 and 1721 four naval expeditions left the Canaries in search of the promised land of St Brendan. More confusingly, a link was made between this island and the even more mysterious Hy Breasail or Brasil. This appears on fifteenth-century maps as Insula Brasil. The origin of this island is controversial and it appears to represent a conflation of several otherworldly locales. It is sometimes asssociated with Brazil but this seems to be a coincidence because of the similiarity to the name of the Brazilwood tree.
That last example, however, the conflation of Hy Brasil with Brazil, is a symptom of a popular appraoch to the Voyage of Brendan. This sees it as recording Irish knowledge of the new world, although usually this is seen as referring to North rather than South America. The highpoint of this is Tim Severin’s attempt to reconstruct Brendan’s voyage in 1976. Taking the Voyage as his guide, he built the type of boat which would have been used by Irish clerical voyagers in the early middle ages. His experiment certainly offered further support to the capabilities of these voyagers. On the other hand, his belief that the text recorded a journey to Newfoundland is not founded in an analysis of what it actually says. We have already looked at the description of the Promised Land of the Saints and I have shown how closely it is modelled on the Heavenly Jerusalem. It is certainly not Newfoundland. Moreover, attempts to locate Brendan’s destination in the Americas run contrary to the text’s assertion that the Promised Land of the Saints can actually be found right next to Ireland.
However, this is not to denigrate the rich and fascinating responses to the Voyage of Brendan from the middle ages up until the present. These, I would argue, are tied into the theme of this conference, the importance of landscape for human perceptions of the world. And finally, I want to stress that the Voyage of Brendan compellingly presents a variety of landscapes, real and imaginary. It shows Heaven, Hell and the liminal states in between. It is this combination of realism, the theological and the fantastical that makes the text so special and so influential.

Paisagem e Paraíso na Irlanda Antiga
i. Introdução
A Viagem do Abade São Brandão é um dos textos antigos irlandeses mais famosos e é tema de muita polêmica e especulação. Algumas pessoas pensam que ele descreve uma viagem real às Américas, realizada por monges irlandeses da alta idade média, enquanto que outros o interpretam como um texto religioso simbólico. Hoje eu vou salientar alguns fios desta trama que estão ligados ao nosso tema Paisagem e examinar se estes fios podem esclarecer o significado da narrativa.
Antes disto, entretanto, quero apresentar o texto. A Viagem de São Brandão é uma narrativa hiberno-latina que foi provavelmente escrita na Irlanda durante a segunda metade do século VIII ou, mais tardar, próximo ao início do século IX, apesar desta datação ainda estar aberta a debate. Ela conta como São Brandão, um importante abade da Irlanda antiga que viveu no século VI, é chamado a partir em uma jornada à Terra Prometida dos Santos que, de acordo com que o texto nos conta, pode ser encontrada no Oceano Atlântico ao noroeste da Irlanda. Ele é acompanhado por uma tripulação de monges nesta viagem, que acontece ao longo de sete anos. O santo e seus companheiros devem enfrentar e vencer tentações antes de chegar a seu destino. No caminho, Brandão visita ilhas no Atlântico Norte, encontra monges e ermitões, celebra a Páscoa nas costas de uma baleia e encontra Judas Iscariote. A paisagem na qual ele viaja é ao mesmo tempo real e imaginária. A narrativa explora a forma perfeita de um abade criar e de um monge viver em uma comunidade monástica perfeita. O texto se baseia em uma rica e diversa tradição literária presente desde o início do século VII.
Hoje eu gostaria de examinar a paisagem na Viagem de Brandão e explorar seu significado mais profundo. Para fazer isto, vou explicar a importância das visões cristãs de mundo, especialmente na geografia. Estas visões estarão ligadas ao desenvolvimento de um ideal religioso conhecido como peregrinatio, ou exílio. Adiante, combinarei estes dois elementos – geografia cristã e ideal religioso – e mostrarei como eles se conectam às paisagems reais ou imaginárias de nosso texto.
ii. Geografia Clássica
Escritores cristãos herdaram a tradição geográfica clássica. Acreditava-se que o mundo, ou orbis terrarum, era um globo composto de três continentes: Europa, Ásia e África. Este globo se encerrava em águas desconhecidas, oceanus. O globo era cercado pelas estrelas e estas, junto com a Lua, rodavam em torno da terra. Os romanos acreditavam que os povos mais civilizados viviam próximos ao centro do mundo, literalmente o Mediterrâneo. Ao se afastar do centro, os povos ficavam menos civilizados e o clima piorava. Portanto, para os romanos, geografia não era apenas geografia. Ela dava a eles uma maneira de interpretar o mundo e determinar a superioridade de sua cultura.
Esta visão do mundo foi o fundamento da maneira como a maioria dos cristãos mais cultos pensava a respeito da paisagem geográfica. Ela foi popularizada por escritores cristãos como Agostinho no século V, Cassiodoro no século VI e Isidoro de Sevilha no século VII. Por exemplo, o trabalho extremamente influente de Isidoro, Etimologias, baseava-se diretamente nela. Além disto, os cristãos combinavam a Bíblia com a herança clássica. Eles colocavam Jerusalém no centro do mundo e mapeavam as divisões étnicas do Gênese nele. Portanto, acreditava-se que África, Europa e Ásia seriam as terras dos descendentes dos três filhos de Noé, respectivamente Cam, Jafé e Sem. Os continentes eram unidos através da peregrinação aos lugares santos do Mediterrãneo. A geografia era considerada importante. Cassiodoro, por exemplo, pensava que estudá-la poderia levar a um maior entendimento de Deus. Além disto, o tempo estava ligado ao espaço, já que os cristãos acreditavam que eles tinha sido criados juntos. Para eles, uma das características do paraíso é que este existia além do tempo.
Havia também um outro fator. Os cristãos acreditavam que poderia haver um paraíso terrestre, apesar de não concordarem a respeito de sua natureza e de sua localização. Para alguns era o Jardim do Éden, perdido no oriente. Para outros, havia um paraíso debaixo das montanhas do Cáucaso, na Ásia Central. Geralmente este paraíso era localizado no oriente mas, com o passar do tempo, muitas pessoas acreditaram que ele se localizava a oeste, escondido no oceano. Como no paraíso celeste, o tempo lá corria de forma diferente; seus habitantes eram muitas vezes imaginados como sendo eternos. Também se pensava a respeito deste paraíso que ele era um lugar concreto, no mundo físico. Estas especulações têm papel importante no paraíso da Viagem de Brandão, a Terra Prometida dos Santos (terra repromissionis sanctorum).
iii. Peregrinatio
Agora é necessário examinar quais ideais religiosos influenciaram a Viagem de Brandão. Um dos mais importantes deles é o conceito de peregrinatio pro Christo ou Exílio para Cristo. Peregrinatio era uma forma de renúncia religiosa que se inspirava nas palavras de Jesus nos Evangelhos, dizendo aos crentes que eles deveriam largar seu local de nascença e sua família para seguir a Deus. Originalmente o termo peregrinus significava estranho, desconhecido, mas entre os irlandeses veio a significar exilado e peregrinatio era uma forma de exílio para agradar a Deus. Uma definição simples de peregrinatio seria que isto significava que um peregrinus ‘peregrino’ deixaria para sempre sua terra ou território natal para servir a Cristo numa terra estrangeira. Durante o século VII os irlandeses consideravam um peregrinatio além-mar como a forma mais pura de renúncia ascética e isto se tornou inspiração para muitos irlandeses, que partiram para o continente europeu ou para a Bretanha. Homens como Columba, o fundador de Iona, e Columbano, o fundador de Luxeuil na Borgonha e Bobbio no norte da Itália. Acreditava-se que peregrinatio era uma forma de martírio. Felizmente o peregrinatio é citado em uma grande variedade das fontes ainda existentes, irlandesas ou não. Este é provavelmente um dos conceitos melhor entendidos da Igreja irlandesa do início do período medieval.
E como isto está relacionado a nosso texto? Primeiramente, já foi provado de maneira convincente que todo um gênero de literatura, composto de narrativas conhecidas coletivamente como contos de viagens, foi inspirado pelas experiências históricas reais de peregrini. Estes contos geralmente fazem com que o protagonista deixe a Irlanda e reme por entre uma quantidade de ilhas imaginárias. Eles se baseiam em uma variedade de fontes, sendo influenciados pela literatura apócrifa cristã, de uma forma bastante geral também por exemplos clássicos como a Eneida e, de uma forma ainda menos direta, pela Odisséia. Vale notar que os tipos mais antigos de contos de viagem são escritos em latim e, mais adiante, estes parecem influenciar diretamente o gênero vernacular irlandês conhecido como immrama (remar sem rumo).
Apesar de já ter acontecido o debate a respeito das origens dos contos de viagem, e de seu relacionamento com um gênero de aventuras no outro mundo conhecido como echtrai, não há motivo para entrar em detalhes a respeito. Basta dizer que, enquanto ambos os gêneros apresentam aventuras em locais com características de outro mundo, os immrama falam especificamente sobre uma multiplicidade de ilhas de outro mundo no além-mar. Estas ilhas foram possivelmente inspiradas, pelo menos em parte, pela discussão de Isidoro a respeito de ilhas no Livro XIV de suas Etimologias. Neste trabalho, sua influente descrição da Irlanda é logo seguida por uma descrição das Ilhas Afortunadas. Isidoro diz ao leitor que estas ilhas foram confundidas com o Paraíso pelos gentios devido à sua fertilidade e abundância naturais. Esta concretização de um paraíso além-mar é levada adiante por escritores irlandeses, que apresentam as ilhas do oceano como laboratórios religiosos e sociais, de modo a explorar os conceitos de monasticismo, céu e inferno.
Muitos críticos já buscaram uma origem histórica para esta característica básica destes contos. Kathleen Hughes sugeriu que contos de viagem são um reflexo literário do peregrinatio. Ela demonstra que é um pequeno pulo da imaginação entre sua prática concreta e a idéia que um penitente ou peregrinus pode ser encontrado navegando nos grandes mares ao oeste. Este raciocínio é reforçado pelo fato que algumas da influências mais antigas são monásticas. Esta teoria recebe apoio das referências mais antigas existentes de um conto do tipo ‘remar sem rumo’, aquele do peregrinus-clérigo Cormac, registrado por Adomnán em Vita Columbae. O que se relata de Cormac é que ele procura por uma terra secreta no oceano, para realizar a sua vocação ascética. Entretanto, existe uma distinção básica entre estes exemplos de contos de peregrinos e a estrutura dos contos de viagem, inclusive da Viagem de Brandão: estas viagens são marcadas por um mesmo ponto de partida e destino. Em outras palavras, o viajante quase sempre retorna para casa, enquanto que do peregrinus se espera que permaneça no exílio.
Existem outras considerações históricas. Já foi argumentado que, ao final do século VIII, o padrão de peregrinatio irlandês mudara devido à dupla influência dos vikings e dos ideais dos ascetas Céle Dé. O segundo grupo tem provavelmente maior influência nisto, especialmente em termos ideológicos e teológicos. Os Céli Dé, que se inspiravam no austero Máel Ruain († 792), foram influentes até o final do século IX. Eles davam ênfase a ideais monásticos mais próximos aos do stabilitas, muitas vezes às custas do peregrinatio. Máel Ruain desencorajava peregrinações além-mar e pedia a seus monges que permanecessem em seus mosteiros e praticassem um estilo de vida austero junto com outros monges, algo que também encontramos no final da Viagem de Brandão. Entretanto, os Céli Dé não eram os únicos a defender o stabilitas. Regras monásticas irlandesas, como a Regra de Ailbe, proibiam o monge de deixar seu mosteiro em circunstâncias normais. Uma ênfase no stabilitas, amplamente disseminada, pode ter significado que a jornada real de um peregrinus, de um Columbano ou Columba, transformou-se em uma busca pelo outro mundo.
iv. Paisagens Reais
Todos estes elementos – geográficos, religiosos e históricos – tem seu papel nas paisagens apresentadas na Viagem de Brandão. A partir de agora, neste trabalho, eu pretendo explorar estas paisagens e examinar como elas se relacionam às idéias que já delineei. Eu vou me concentrar em três tipos de paisagem: a real, a liminar e, finalmente, a apocalíptica. O que elas nos dizem sobre a Igreja irlandesa inicial e sobre suas crenças?
Deve-se enfatizar que a geografia das ilhas que formam o centro da Viagem de Brandão é, de fato, real. Isto se baseia não apenas nas descrições físicas, que examinaremos logo a seguir, mas também em outros tipos de evidências. Por exemplo, sabemos que clérigos irlandeses exploraram o Atlântico Norte. O geógrafo irlandês do início do século XIX, Dicuil, nos dá insight importante sobre as motivações e as conquistas de viajantes clericais irlandeses no seu Liber de Mensura Orbis Terrae. Ele descreve como os clérigos irlandeses buscaram as ilhas do Atlântico Norte para viver sua vida religiosa, numa forma efetiva de peregrinatio. Entretanto, a chegada dos vikings causou o fim de seus assentamentos. Além disto, em uma passagem famosa e memorável, ele descreve uma expedição de monges irlandeses à Islândia, até então não colonizada, que data do período aproximado de 795 dC. Os monges observaram de perto o que eles consideraram dados físicos e astronômicos incomuns, inclusive o fenômeno do sol da meia-noite que ocorre no verão da Islândia:
...clérigos que viveram na ilha... me disseram… que o sol se punha à noite… de tal forma que não havia escuridão... e um homem podia fazer o que quisesse como se o sol estivesse no céu, até mesmo remover piolhos de sua camisa... Liber de mensura orbis terrae, vii §11
Realmente, quando os nórdicos chegaram à Islândia eles retinham uma memória de assentamentos irlandeses anteriores por lá, até mesmo em ilhas mais ao norte, como as Faroés.
Esta paisagem histórica de viagens no Atlântico Norte, inspiradas pelo peregrinatio, é fundamental para a Viagem de São Brandão. O uso do real, descrito em linguagem simples e direta, dá embasamento à história e a torna mais acessível. Eu coloquei alguns exemplos neste slide. Por exemplo, a Ilha das Ovelhas e o Paraíso dos Pássaros, localizadas uma ao lado da outra e entre outras ilhas, são quase certamente as Ilhas Faroés. Estas ilhas do Atlântico Norte são descritas em linguagem direta como sendo cheias de ovelhas, peixes e pássaros do mar. Esta descrição é muito similar àquela de Dicuil em seu Liber de Mensura Orbis Terrae (vii §15) e esta é a descrição tida como a descrição das Ilhas Faroés. De fato a evidência tirada do exame de pólen dá apoio à idéia que houve assentamentos religiosos irlandeses nestas ilhas antes da chegada dos vikings.
Da mesma forma, a imagem do Pilar de Cristal, encontrado na narrativa após navegar-se por mar aberto, parece evocar um iceberg no Atlântico Norte e descreve as condições metereológicas associadas com o encontro com um iceberg. A Ilhas dos Ferreiros, ‘bruta, pedregosa e cheia de lava escória’ parece ser a Islândia, enquanto que a Montanha de Fogo (Nauigatio §24) que tinha ‘muita fumaça no topo’ é uma descrição bem exata de um vulcão, apesar de sua erupção ser atribuída a demônios em vez da geologia. Como vocês podem ver, existem muitos exemplos deste embasamento no real. Eu quero examinar um destes exemplos em particular, a Ilha de Paul, o Ermitão.
Eu coloquei um pedaço do texto no slide:
Quando chegaram à praia não conseguiam encontrar um local para aportar por causa da altura do penhasco. A ilha era pequena e circular... Não havia terra sobre ela, mas parecia ser uma pedra nua como uma pederneira....
A descrição física corresponde a de uma pequena e isolada ilha do Atlântico Norte chamada Rockall, hoje em dia bastante famosa porque está no meio de uma disputa de direitos de pesca e de potencial exploração de petróleo entre a Irlanda, a Islândia e a Grã-Bretanha. No texto ela está localizada ao sul da Ilha dos Ferreiros, que como já vemos deve ser a Islândia, e a noroeste da Irlanda. Esta localização corresponde bastante à localização real de Rockall. Mais uma vez, um lugar real é a inspiração para as paisagens marítimas da Viagem de Brandão.
Estas paisagens marítimas são tão convincentes que alguns historiadores chegaram ao ponto de argumentar que os irlandeses chegaram à Groenlândia cerca do ano 900, bem como ao Mar de Sargasso. Estas sugestões são, entretanto, altamente especulativas, e não são comprovadas pela história ou pela arqueologia. Na realidade, um dos mais populares enganos a respeito da Viagem de Brandão é que ela nos conta como os monges irlandeses chegaram até a América do Norte no século VI. Como veremos, a descrição da Terra Prometida dos Santos é extremamente simbólica e é muito pouco provável que represente a América. A geografia real da Viagem de Brandão está localizada com firmeza no mundo das viagens de clérigos para as Hébridas, Faroés e Islândia no Atlântico Norte. Na verdade, a Viagem de Brandão é um exemplo de como observações empíricas no Atlãntico Norte alimentaram as especulações intelectuais e as explorações realizadas nas mentes de escritores. O autor da Viagem de Brandão construiu uma narrativa que se baseava em experiências marítimas verdadeiras. Entretanto, ele teceu uma trama misturada de realidade com preocupações religiosas. É um testemunho da qualidade do texto que tantos até hoje o tomam como realidade literal.
v. Paisagens Monásticas
Pesquisadores já reconheceram há muito que a Viagem de São Brandão é um texto monástico em seu sentido mais amplo. Em outras palavras, não é apenas um produto eclesiástico, mas também se preocupa com a vida monástica e sua organização. O texto abre com a visita do monge Barinthus ao mosteiro de Brandão em Clonfert. Logo a seguir Barinthus cria uma imagem que evoca o mosteiro de seu filho, Mernóc:
... os irmãos (monges) vieram de suas celas para nos receber como um enxame de abelhas. Suas habitações eram espalhadas mas eles viviam como um na fé...
A comunidade é descrita como sendo composta de pequenas celas monásticas individuais e isto está bastante de acordo com o que sabemos através do registro arqueológico. Como resultado, desde o início o leitor é apresentado com o que parece ser um retrato realista da vida religiosa irlandesa da Alta Idade Média.
Mais que isso, os heróis são todos monges. O texto, no entanto, vai além. Ele nos oferece paisagens bem embasadas de vida monástica. Como já vimos, ele evoca fortemente a comunidade de Brandão em Clonfert e o mosteiro de Mernóc perto de Slieve League no noroeste da Irlanda. Além disto, Énda de Aran, um importante fundador da Igreja irlandesa, tem papel importante como mentor de Brandão. Da maneira típica deste texto, estes mosteiros reais são comparados com mosteiros que são bem mais idealizados, e também imaginários.
Deste modo, Brandão visita a comunidade de Ailbe no curso de sua viagem. Este mosteiro é habitado por monges que não envelhecem e que vivem em perfeita harmonia com Deus. Os monges podem ser imortais, mas sua existência se baseia em sua prática de um voto de silêncio e no seu estilo de vida simples. Mesmo aqui, os monges vivem no tipo de cela individual que encontramos no mosteiro de Mernóc. Do mesmo modo, a Ilha dos Três Corais, onde um dos monges de Brandão é aceito e entra na comunidade, parece menos fantástica porque a liturgia dos monges é cuidadosamente descrita.
A vocação de ermitão é também foco do texto. A linha eremita do monasticismo era profundamente admirada por escritores irlandeses e os famosos ermitões, São Paulo Ermitão e Santo Antão do Egito, aparecem nas esculturas das cruzes altas irlandesas. Brandão encontra Paul o Ermitão, que é inspirado nestas figuras históricas. Ele não usa roupa alguma além de seus cabelos e depende da ajuda de lontras para se alimentar. A natureza fantástica de sua vida é contrabalançada pela descrição realista da ilha, que já examinamos anteriormente.
Por todo o texto, o papel de Brandão como abade, como pai de seus monges, é enfatizado. Ele é chamado constantemente de pai santo (sanctus pater) ou pai venerável (venerabalis pater). Ele cuida de seus monges, os lidera na liturgia e os acalma quando estão em perigo. Quando finalmente retorna à Irlanda, os monges que ele deixara lá glorificam a Deus porque o pai que eles amam retornou. Esta imagem atraente de Brandão é altamente idealizada, com certeza, mas nos dá um insight de como se imaginava um abade na Alta Idade Média irlandesa.
As paisagens na Viagem de Brandão são também litúrgicas, um reflexo do fato que este é um texto monástico. Os dias dos monges são governados pelas horas canônicas e pelo recitar dos salmos. A narrativa completa, por sua vez, está estruturada em torno da celebração do ano litúrgico, que culmina na Páscoa, a festa religiosa mais importante do calendário cristão. Este ciclo se repete ao longo dos sete anos da viagem e isto fica claro mesmo numa leitura superficial do texto. Eu darei três exemplos deste tipo de modo a explorar mais profundamente seu significado, mas tenham em mente que há muitos outros exemplos presentes.
Minha primeira mostra da importância da liturgia é a forma que o texto dá ênfase às horas canônicas das Matinas, Noas, Sextas, Vésperas e assim por diante. Estes são pontos fixos do dia em que os monges cantam os salmos. Eles são citados constantemente na Viagem de Bandão. Entretanto o ponto alto é certamente a celebração da Páscoa no Paraíso dos Pássaros, onde os monges cantam os salmos à meia-noite, na aurora, no meio da manhã, ao meio-dia, à tarde e duas vezes à noite, nos apresentando o dia monástico de oração completo.
Por toda a narrativa, a Semana Santa é enfatizada. Isto era particularmente importante para os cristãos da antiguidade, por culminar com a traição, morte e ressureição de Jesus. Portanto, na Ilha das Ovelhas, que como vimos anteriormente é quase que com certeza uma das Ilhas Faroés, Brandão faz questão de celebrar a Eucaristia. Além disto, as ovelhas são apresentadas simbolicamente. Os monges festejam comendo uma ‘ovelha sem mancha’ do rebanho, o que automaticamente se compara a Jesus e seu sacrifício. A celebração de Páscoa mais memorável é aquela que acontece nas costas de Iasconius, a criatura do mar que é geralmente indentificada como sendo uma baleia. Brandão celebra a Missa cantada neste local, e os monges só percebem que estão apoiados em uma criatura viva quando tentam fazer comida acendendo o fogo em suas costas.
Estes exemplos ilustram uma das características chave da Viagem de Brandão. O dia monástico e o ano litúrgico são apresentados como algo realizado na paisagem. Eles são parte dela em vez de ser algo que simplesmente se executa dentro de uma igreja ou mosteiro. A Viagem de Brandão nos apresenta uma externalização da vida monástica em cenários do Atlântico Norte. O local mais estranho é certamente Iasconius. A criatura gigante do mar é uma menção da baleia de Jonas bem como da narrativa de Plínio, o Velho, de um peixe similar onde marinheiros aterraram. Entretanto, ele também nos fornece uma lição simbólica mais profunda: ele é um representante da natureza não-caída, onde mesmo os animais agem de acordo com o plano de Deus. A presença de Iasconius aponta para as intenções mais profundas da narrativa.
vi. Paisagens Liminares
Estas intenções também se refletem no que eu chamo de ‘paisagens liminares’ da Viagem de Brandão. Estas paisagens contém elementos claramente sobrenaturais ou religiosos, mas como em outras paisagens, também são apresentadas com um grau de realismo superficial. Na história elas são utilizadas para mostrar o movimento dos viajantes de um estado de tempo ou um estado do ser para outro. Eu desejo examinar os dois processos.
Inicialmente eu darei atenção aos seres que estão em estado liminar. Nosso primeiro encontro com eles é no Paraíso dos Pássaros. Como já vimos, estudiosos que defendem a idéia da narrativa como registro de uma viagem real muitas vezes apontam a descrição realista da paisagem da ilha. Entretanto, é impossível separar esta descrição do fato dos pássaros serem mais do que aparentam. Quando Brandão os vê pela primeira vez eles estão pousados juntos em uma árvore. Um deles voa até ele, suas asas fazendo o som de um sino de mão, imitanto o chamado monástico para as orações. O pássaro conta a Brandão que os ‘pássaros’ na realidade são almas de seres que foram enredados na Queda de Lúcifer do Céu, apesar de não compartilharem de seu pecado. Como resultado, apesar de barrados de entrar no Paraíso, as almas se mantém na presença de Deus e elas contam ao santo que:
Vagamos por diversas regiões do ar e do firmamento e da terra… Mas em dias santos e domingos recebemos de volta nossos corpos… para que possamos ficar aqui e dar graças a nosso criador. (Nauigatio §11)
Esta passagem os identifica como os anjos neutros da literatura apócrifa cristã medieval. Estes seres não tomaram partido com Deus nem com Satanás, porque foram enganados. Tardiamente eles tomam o partido de Deus, mas apenas após a queda de Satanás. A crença em anjos neutros foi condenada no cristianismo oficial. Na época em que a Viagem de Brandão foi escrita esta menção era bastante incomum e é possível que o imaginário nativo da Irlanda que liga ‘pessoas pássaro’ com o outro mundo tenha seu papel nesta narrativa também. Por exemplo, as antigas sagas irlandesas The Dream of Óengus e The Destruction of Da Derga’s Hostel apresentam com destaque pássaros deste tipo. Esta conexão parece bastante possível, já que a Viagem de Brandão se baseia no universo irlandês. O pássaro passa a profetizar para Brandão o tempo de sua viagem (sete anos) bem como o sucesso final da mesma, mostrando que agora os anjos neutros executam o plano de Deus.
A existência – imperfeita, mas ainda paradisíaca – dos anjos neutros se contrasta com um outro exemplo da misericórdia de Deus – a soltura temporária de Judas do Inferno. Os viajantes o encontram passando pelo que parece ser uma penitência severa em uma pedra no oceano:
Eles encontraram um homem, hirsuto e desagradável ao olhar, sentado em uma pedra. À medida que as ondas iam ao seu encontro por todos os lados, elas o atingiam até mesmo no topo de sua cabeça...(Nauigatio §22)
Entretanto, Judas revela que este é um ‘Paraíso de Delícias’ (paradisus deliciarum) comparado à sua punição no Inferno. É um ato de misericórdia divina, dado a ele aos domingos, durante o Natal e Páscoa, e nos dias santos associados com a Virgem Maria. Isto espelha de modo significativo a dispensa dada por Deus aos anjos neutros. Tanto os anjos quanto Judas se movem por estado liminares, os anjos do ar para a terra e Judas das profundezas do inferno para a terra. Nos dois casos, idéias teológicas recebem uma forma concreta através da sua realização na paisagem.
O exemplo mais claro de uma paisagem liminar é o que acompanha a passagem deste mundo para a Terra Prometida dos Santos. Esta é um paraíso terreno mas é também a Jerusalém Celeste, o paraíso apocalíptico do final dos tempos. A Viagem de Brandão inicia e termina com esta passagem entre mundos. A história abre com o relato de Barinthus de como ele e seu filho , o abade Mernóc, viajaram de um mosteiro no noroeste da Irlanda até esta terra prometida.
Embarcamos e içamos as velas, mas uma névoa tão densa nos cobriu que mal podíamos enxergar a proa da nave. Mas, após termos passado por isto por aproximadamente uma hora, uma grande luz brilhou à nossa volta, e surgiu a nossos olhos uma terra vasta e cheia de grama e frutos. (Nauigatio §1)
A sua jornada, apesar de mais curta, prefigura de forma bem próxima a de Brandão, como pode ser visto na segunda passagem deste slide:
... quando se aproximou a noite um grande nevoeiro os envolveu, de forma que um mal podia ver o outro... Após a passagem de uma hora uma poderosa luz brilhou sobre eles novamente e a nave repousava na praia... Eles viram uma terra vasta cheia de árvores carregadas de frutos... (Nauigatio §28)
Notem como o nevoeiro, nas duas instâncias, é um sinal externo de que os viajantes estão passando de um estado da existência para outro. A passagem da escuridão para a luz e do intangível (o nevoeiro) para o concreto (a terra).
vii. Paisagens Apocalípticas
Este estado liminar é a introdução necessária à paisagem final, que é a do apocalipse. Com isto eu quero dizer a aparição da Jerusalém Celeste, como descrita no no Livro das Revelações, também conhecido como Apocalipse — o último livro da Bíblia cristã. O clímax deste texto, que profetiza o fim do espaço e do tempo como os conhecemos, fala de um novo céu e uma nova terra com a Jerusalém Celeste no seu centro. Ela está além do tempo e iluminada pela presença de Deus. A Jerusalém Celeste foi uma imagem poderosa para os cristãos e é base da literatura visionária até hoje. Também é parte central da Viagem de Brandão. As duas descrições da Terra Prometida dos Santos contidas no no início e no final deste texto são releituras da Cidade Celeste em uma paisagem insular. As descrições não nos deixam dúvidas que a ilha e a cidade são a mesma coisa. No slide eu apontei os elementos comuns compartilhados entre a Jerusalém Celeste do Livro de Revelações e a Terra Prometida dos Santos na Viagem de Brandão.
A Luz é um componente importante dos dois lugares. No Apocalipse a Jerusalém Celeste brilha com a luz de Deus (Apo 21:11, 23-5) e não necessita de sol ou lua. Da mesma forma, a Terra Prometida dos Santos é iluminada pela luz de Jesus (Nauigatio §1, §28). A falta de sol ou lua indica que Brandão saiu do tempo terrreno e entrou na eternidade.
Esta saída do tempo terreno é mostrada na Jerusalém Terreste através da falta das estações do ano. Desta forma, as Árvores da Vida dão frutos por todo o ano. Na Terra Prometida dos Santos, Barinthus descobre que cada planta está em flor e cada árvore com frutos ao mesmo tempo. Quando Brandão descobre árvores com frutos um mensageiro angélico diz a ele que é sempre assim. O paralelo com as Árvores da Vida do Apocalipse é claro. Muitos cristãos acreditavam que as estações eram resultado do Pecado Original no Jardim do Éden. Na Jerusalém Celeste e na Viagem de Brandão há um retorno à perfeição do Éden. Além disto, o Apocalipse dá ênfase à aniquilação do tempo normal (Apo 10:6 et passim). Esta também é uma característica da Viagem de Brandão. Quando Barinthus e Mernóc chegam à Terra Prometida dos Santos, eles passam o que parece ser a eles quinze dias lá. Na verdade é um tempo muito maior e Barintus vê nisso um sinal de sua natureza sagrada.
Tanto o Livro de Revelações quanto a Viagem de Brandão chamam a atenção para as pedras preciosas do paraíso. Estas pedras foram sujeitas e toda uma área da exegese, onde foram ligadas às virtudes espirituais. Inclusive, é dito a Brandão que ele leve algumas delas de volta à Irlanda com ele como evidência de sua viagem. Mais importante ainda, o anjo diz ao santo que a ilha vai se tornar conhecida a seus sucessores, muitos anos no futuro, após a perseguição dos cristãos, numa certa referência ao final do mundo descrito no Apocalipse.
Finalmente, a Jerusalém Celeste é descrita como sendo dividida em duas partes pelo Rio da Vida que flui do trono de Deus. Barinthus diz a Brandão que a Terra Prometida dos Santos tem um rio que passa por ela do leste para o oeste (Nauigatio §1) e o próprio Brandão vê que ele divide a ilha em dois (Nauigatio §28). O santo não consegue atravessar o rio, pois deve esperar o Julgamento Final quando finalmente ele poderá entrar de maneira completa na Jerusalém Celeste.
A genialidade da Viagem de Brandão consiste no fato desta ilha tão claramente de outro mundo ser tantas vezes tomada de forma literal. Retornarei a isto em um momento, mas antes disto, o que o texto tenta nos dizer? Barintus comenta com os monges de Mernóc que eles vivem ante portam paradisi ‘nos portões do Paraíso’ (Nauigatio §1). O mosteiro destes é próximo a Slieve League (mons Lapidus) e a jornada de lá até a Terra Prometida dos Santos parece curta. Por outro lado, Brandão viaja por sete anos. No entando, é dito a ele que esta é a vontade divina: ele só alcança a ilha quando ele e seus monges estão prontos. Para fazer isto, Brandão gira a leste, voltando em direção à Irlanda em vez de viajar ainda mais a oeste. Novamente, portanto, a narrativa sugere que a ilha pode ser encontrada próxima à costa da Irlanda. Claro que não é realmente uma ilha concreta, não como os leitores do conto a perceberiam. Não, eles a perceberiam em termos teológicos.
viii. Comentários Finais
Entretanto, a genialidade deste texto está exatamente no fato que ele pode ser apreciado para além de sua teologia. Ele foi muito popular no continente europeu, sendo representado em mais de 100 manuscritos. Além disto, foi adaptado para outras línguas vernáculas inclusive tentativas inicias em holandês médio (De reis van sint Brandaan) e francês anglo-normando (Voyage de St Brendan). Estas adaptações são na realidade novos textos. Elas tendem a focar mais na ação que a Viagem de Brandão e são mais fantasiosos. Entretanto, eles também ajudaram a popularizar a idéia que o conto, de alguma forma, era o registro de uma viagem real ou que continha conhecimento geográfico real. Como vimos, a geografia do Atlântico Norte realmete possui papel importante no texto. Mas não foi isto que inspirou as imaginações de leitores mais tardios, foi a Terra Prometida dos Santos. Ela foi se interligando com outras ilhas de outro mundo irlandesas, bem como com sua inspiração vinda de especulações de geógrafos clássicos. Desta forma nasceu a idéia que existia realmente uma Ilha de São Brandão que poderia ser encontrada no oceano a oeste da Europa. Isto, é claro vai de encontro com a história original que fala explicitamente que Brandão navega para leste, voltando em direção à Irlanda, de modo a encontrar o paraíso.
Esta ilha mística era algumas vezes chamada de Ilha de São Brandão (St Brendan’s Island) ou Isla de San Borondón, e era a uma das bases da cartografia medieval e renascentista. Esta ilha aparece no Mapa Mundi Hereford do século XIII (a T-O mappa mundi) um pouco além da costa da África, enquanto que o mapa dos irmãos Pizzigani a situa logo ao norte das Ilhas Canárias. Durante a Era dos Descobrimentos acreditava-se que era localizada am algum lugar do Atlântico, talvez a oeste das Ilhas Canárias ou um pouco mais distante, além dos Açores. Ela era algumas vezes considerada como a misteriosa ‘oitava ilha’ do arquipélado das Canárias. Entre os anos de 1526 e 1721 quatro expedições navais deixaram as Canárias em busca da terra prometida de São Brandão. De maneira ainda mais confusa, foi feita uma conexão entre esta ilha e a ainda mais misteriosa ilha Hy Breasail ou Brasil. Isto aparece em mapas do século XV como Insula Brasil. A origem desta ilha é controversa e parece representar a mistura de muitos locais de outro mundo. Ela é algumas vezes associada com o Brasil, mas parece ser apenas uma coincidência causada pela similaridade do nome do pau-brasil..
Este último exemplo, entretanto, a mistura de Hy Brasil com o Brasil, é sintoma de uma visão popular da Viagem de Brandão. Esta visão encara o conto como o registro do conhecimento irlandês do novo mundo, apesar de geralmente este conhecimento ser associado à América do Norte em vez da América do Sul. O ponto alto desta teoria foi a tentativa de Tim Severin de reconstruir a viagem de Brandão em 1976. Utilizando o texto da Viagem como guia, ele construiu o tipo de barco que teria sido utilizado pelos viajantes clérigos irlandeses na alta idade média. Seu experimento certamente deu reconhecimento para a capacidade destes viajantes. Por outro lado, sua crença que o texto registrava uma viagem até Newfoundland não se baseia na análise do que o texto realmente diz. Nós já examinamos a descrição da Terra Prometida dos Santos, e eu já demonstrei o quanto ela lembra a Jerusalém Celeste. Certamente não é Newfoundland. Além disto, tentativas de se localizar o destino de Brandão nas Américas entram em conflito com a afirmação do texto que a Terra Prometida dos Santos pode ser encontrada bem próxima à Irlanda.
Entretanto, o objetivo não é denegrir as ricas e fascinantes respostas ao texto da Viagem de Brandão desde a idade média até o tempo presente. Estas respostas, eu argumentaria, estão ligadas ao tema desta conferência, a importância da paisagem para as percepções humanas do mundo. Finalmente, eu quero enfatizar que a Viagem de Brandão apresenta de maneira convincente uma variedade de paisagens, reais e imaginárias. Ela mostra o Céu, o Inferno e os estados liminares entre eles. O conto é uma combinação de realismo com temas teológicos e fantásticos que tornam o texto tão especial e tão influente.
