Source text - English Shown here is a color postcard from late-19th century Valencia, Spain, with season’s greetings from a night watchman. Public workers delivered their aguinaldos (season’s greetings) and received a small bonus or tip in exchange. The arrival of chromolithography in the world of graphic arts by the mid-19th century brought color to these simple postcards. The night watchmen were in charge of patrolling the streets and adjusting the street lighting. In some cities and neighborhoods, they also would open the doors of certain buildings. In some countries, during certain eras, they were also in charge of announcing the time and the weather conditions. They used to carry a stick and blow a whistle in case they needed to alert the neighborhood to any event. The occupation of night watchman existed in Spain, in other countries in Europe, and in some countries in South America since the 18th century. Many tradesmen also delivered this sort of greetings during the festive season: bakers, milkmen, electricians, apprentices, barbers, and paperboys sent their greetings for Easter or Christmas by means of cards that had their own particular style. The wording on those greetings was mostly standard and it was written or printed on the reverse of the card: “Season’s Greetings from your postman” or “Your night watchman wishes you a Merry Christmas,” or some such. The printed text on the front of the card described the characteristics of the occupation in question. This tradition endured from 1831 until the 1960s, when it started to dwindle. These greetings cards are ethnographic records of both the practice of asking for an aguinaldo by public workers and also of the occupations themselves, many of which no longer exist. The Valencian Library holds a vast collection of visual material that includes prints, photographs, posters, postcards, maps, drawings, and other minor printed ephemera, including more than 45,000 postcards dating from 1873 to the present. The postcards in the collection of the Valencian Library mostly are views of cities, monuments, urban squares, and everyday scenes. Most are printed by collotype.

Il s'agit ici d'une carte postale en couleur de Valence, en Espagne, datant de la fin du XIXe siècle et sur laquelle un veilleur de nuit présente ses vœux. Les employés des services publics faisaient part de leurs « aguinaldos » (meilleurs vœux) et recevaient en échange une modeste prime ou un pourboire. L'arrivée au milieu du XIXe siècle de la chromolithographie dans le monde de l'art graphique permit de proposer de simples cartes postales comme celles-ci en couleur. Les veilleurs de nuit avaient pour mission de patrouiller dans les rues et de s’occuper de l'éclairage. Dans quelques communes et quartiers, ils ouvraient aussi les portes de certains bâtiments. Dans plusieurs pays, à des périodes précises, ils avaient également pour tâche de donner l'heure et d'annoncer les conditions météorologiques. Ils portaient une matraque et donnaient un coup de sifflet quand ils avaient besoin d'alerter le voisinage d'un quelconque événement. La fonction de veilleur de nuit existait en Espagne, dans d'autres pays d'Europe et dans quelques pays d'Amérique du Sud depuis le XVIIIe siècle. De nombreux commerçants suivaient aussi cette tradition des vœux pendant la saison des fêtes : pour Pâques ou pour Noël, boulangers, laitiers, électriciens, apprentis, barbiers, livreurs de journaux envoyaient leurs vœux par cartes postales, dont chacune avait son propre style. Les formules utilisées étaient plutôt banales, les vœux étaient écrits ou imprimés au verso de la carte : « Meilleurs vœux de la part de votre facteur » ou « votre veilleur de nuit vous souhaite un joyeux Noël » ou autre expression similaire. Le texte imprimé au recto de la carte décrivait les caractéristiques du métier dont il était question. Cette tradition dura de 1831 jusqu'aux années 1960, période à laquelle elle commença de décliner. Ces cartes de vœux présentent un double intérêt ethnographique, elles témoignent à la fois de cette pratique qui consistait pour les ouvriers à demander un « aguinaldo » et également de l'existence de ces métiers qui, pour beaucoup, ont disparu. La Bibliothèque valencienne possède une vaste collection de supports visuels comprenant des tirages, des photographies, des affiches, des cartes postales, des cartes, des dessins et autres éphémères imprimés mineurs, dont plus de 45 000 cartes postales datant de 1873 à nos jours. Les cartes postales de la collection de la Bibliothèque valencienne sont principalement des vues panoramiques de villes, de monuments, de places publiques et de scènes de la vie quotidienne. La plupart sont imprimées en phototypie.
