Source text - English Among the PC reproaches to Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, the one that stands out for its sheer stupidity was that there are no gay couples in the film which takes place in LA, a city with a strong gay population… How come those PC Leftists who complain about the sub-representation of sexual and ethnic minorities in Hollywood movies never complain about the gross misrepresentation of the lower class majority of workers? It’s OK if workers are invisible, just that we get here and there a gay or lesbian character…
I remember a similar incident at the first conference on the idea of Communism in London in 2009. Some people in the public voiced the complaint that there was only one woman among the participants, plus no black person and no one from Asia, to which Badiou remarked that it was strange how no one was bothered by the fact that there were no workers among the participants, especially given that the topic was Communism.
And, back to La La Land, we should bear in mind that the movie opens up precisely with the depiction of hundreds of precarious and/or unemployed workers on their way to Hollywood to search for a job that would boost their career. The first song (“Another Day of Sun”) shows them singing and dancing to make the time pass while they are stuck in a highway traffic jam. Mia and Sebastian, who are among them, each in his/her car, are the two who will succeed—the (obvious) exceptions. And, from this standpoint, their falling in love (which will enable their success) enters the story precisely to blur in the background the invisibility of hundreds who will fail, making it appear that it was their love (and not sheer luck) which made them special and destined to success. Ruthless competition is the name of the game, with no hint of solidarity (recall numerous audition scenes where Mia is repeatedly humiliated). No wonder that, when I hear the first lines of the most famous song from La La Land (“City of stars, are you shining just for me / city of stars, there is so much that I can’t see”), I find it hard to resist the temptation to hum back the most stupid orthodox Marxist reply imaginable: “No, I am not shining just for the petit-bourgeois ambitious individual that you are, I am also shining for the thousands of exploited precarious workers in Hollywood whom you can’t see and who will not succeed like you, to give them some hope!”
Mia and Sebastian start a relationship and move in together, but they grow apart because of their desire to succeed: Mia wants to become an actress while Sebastian wants to own a club where he would play authentic old jazz. First, Sebastian joins a pop-jazz band and spends time touring, then, after the premiere of her monodrama fails, Mia leaves Los Angeles and moves back home to Boulder City. Alone in LA, Sebastian receives a call from a casting director who had attended and enjoyed Mia’s play, and invites Mia to a film audition. Sebastian drives to Boulder City and persuades her to return. Mia is simply asked to tell a story for the audition; she begins to sing about her Aunt who inspired her to pursue acting. Confident that the audition was a success, Sebastian asserts that Mia must devote herself wholeheartedly to the opportunity. They profess they will always love each other, but are uncertain of their future. Five years later, Mia is a famous actress and married to another man, with whom she has a daughter. One night, the couple stumble upon a jazz bar. Noticing the Seb’s logo, Mia realizes Sebastian has finally opened his own club. Sebastian spots Mia, looking unsettled and regretful, in the crowd and begins to play their love theme. This prompts an extended dream sequence in which the two imagine what might have been had their relationship worked out perfectly. The song ends and Mia leaves with her husband. Before walking out, she shares with Sebastian one last knowing look and smile, happy for the dreams they have both achieved.
As was already noted by many critics, the final 10 minutes fantasy is simply a Hollywood musical version of the film: it shows how the story would be told in a classic Hollywood musical. Such a reading confirms the film’s reflexivity: it stages in a movie how the movie should end with regard to the genre formula to which it relates. La La Land is clearly a self-reflexive film, a film on the genre of musicals, but it works alone; one doesn’t have to know the full history of musicals to enjoy and understand it (much like what Bazin wrote on Chaplin’s Limelight: it is a reflexive film about the old Chaplin’s declining career, but it stands alone; one doesn’t have to know Chaplin’s early career as the Tramp to enjoy it). Interestingly, the more we progress into the film, the less musical numbers are in it and the more of pure (melo)drama – till, at the end, we are thrown back into a musical which explodes as a fantasy.
Apart from obvious references to other musicals, Chazelle’s more subtle reference is Sandrich’s classic Rogers/Astaire musical screwball comedy Top Hat (1935). There are many good things to say about Top Hat, beginning with the role of tap dancing as the disturbing intrusion into the daily life routine (Astaire practices tap dancing in the hotel floor above Ginger Rogers, which makes her complain, thus bringing the couple together). Compared to La La Land, what cannot but strike the eye is the total psychological flatness of Top Hat where there is no depth, just puppet-like acting which pervades even the most intimate moments. The final song and its staging (“Piccolino”) in no way relates to the story’s happy ending; the words of the song are purely self-referential, merely telling the story of how this song itself came to be and inviting us to dance to it: “By the Adriatic waters / Venetian sons and daughters / Are strumming a new tune upon their guitars / It was written by a Latin / A gondolier who sat in / His home out in Brooklyn and gazed at the stars // He sent his melody / Across the sea / To Italy / And we know / They wrote some words to fit / That catchy bit / And christened it / The Piccolino // And we know that it’s the reason / Why everyone this season / Is strumming and humming a new melody. // Come to the casino / And hear them play the Piccolino / Dance with your bambino / To the strains of the catchy Piccolino / Drink your glass of vino / And when you’ve had your plate of scalopino / Make them play the Piccolino / The catchy Piccolino / And dance to the strains of that new melody / The Piccolino.” And this is the truth of the film: not the ridiculous plot but the music and tap dancing as a self-goal. In parallel with Andersen’s Red Shoes, the hero just cannot help tap-dancing: it is for him an irresistible drive. The singing dialogue between Astaire and Rogers, even at its most sensuous (as in the famous “Dancing cheek to cheek”) is just a pretext for the musical-dancing exercise.
La La Land may appear superior to such an exercise since it dwells in psychological realism: reality intrudes into the dreamworld of musicals (like the latest instalments of superhero films which bring out the hero’s psychological complexity, his traumas and inner doubts). But it is crucial to note how the otherwise realist story has to conclude with the escape into musical fantasy. So what happens at the film’s end?
The first and obvious Lacanian reading of the film would be to see the plot as yet another variation on the theme of “there is no sexual relationship”. The successful careers of the two protagonists which tear them apart are like the ice hitting the Titanic in Cameron’s movie: they are here to save the dream of love (staged in the final fantasy), i.e., to mask the immanent impossibility of their love, the fact that, if they were to remain together, they would turn into a bitter disappointed couple. Consequently, the ultimate version of the film would have been the reversal of the final situation: Mia and Sebastian are together and enjoy full professional success, but their lives are empty, so they go to a club and dream of a fantasy in which they live happily together a modest life, since they both renounced their careers, and (in a dream within a dream) they imagine making the opposite choice and romantically remember the missed opportunity of their life together…
We do find a similar reversal in Family Man (Brett Ratner, 2000). Jack Campbell, a single Wall Street executive, hears on Christmas Eve that his former girlfriend, Kate, called him after many years. On Christmas Day, Jack wakes up in a suburban New Jersey bedroom with Kate and two children; he hurries back to his office and condo in New York, but his closest friends do not recognize him. He is now living the life he could have had, had he stayed with his girlfriend—a modest family life, where he is a car tire salesman for Kate’s father and Kate is a not-for-profit lawyer. Just as Jack is finally realizing the true value of his new life, his epiphany jolts him back to his wealthy former life on Christmas Day. He forgoes closing a big acquisition deal to intercept Kate who also focused on her career and became a wealthy corporate lawyer. After he learns that she only called him to give back some of his old possessions since she is moving to Paris, he runs after her at the airport and describes the family they had in the alternate universe in an effort to win back her love. She agrees to have a cup of coffee at the airport, suggesting that they will have a future… So what we get is a compromise solution at its worst: somehow the two will combine the best of both worlds, remaining rich capitalists but being at the same time a loving couple with humanitarian concerns… In short, they will keep the cake and eat it, as they say, and La La Land at least avoids this cheap optimism.
So what effectively happens at the film’s end? It’s, of course, not that Mia and Sebastian simply decide to give preference to their careers ahead of their love relationship. The least one should add is that they both find success in their careers and achieve their dreams because of the relationship they had, so that their love is a kind of vanishing mediator: far from being an obstacle to their success, it “mediates” it. So does the film subvert the Hollywood formula of producing a couple insofar as both fulfil their dreams, but NOT as a couple? And is this subversion more than simply a postmodern narcissistic preference of personal fulfilment over Love? In other words, what if their love was not a true Love-Event? Plus, what if their career “dream” was not the devotion to a true artistic Cause but just a career dream? So what if none of the competing claims (career, love, etc.) really displays an unconditional commitment that follows a true Event? Their love is not true, their pursuing of career is just that — not a full artistic commitment. In short, Mia’s and Sebastian’s betrayal is deeper than choosing one alternative to the detriment of the other: their entire life is already a betrayal of an authentically-committed existence. This is also why the tension between the two claims is not a tragic existential dilemma but a very soft uncertainty and oscillation.
Such a reading is nonetheless too simple, for it ignores the enigma of the final fantasy: WHOSE fantasy is this, his or hers? Is it not HERS (she is the observer-dreamer), and the whole dream is focused on her destiny of going to Paris to shoot the film, etc.? Against some critics who claimed that the film is male-biased, i.e., that Sebastian is the active partner in the couple, one should assert that Mia is the subjective centre-point of the film: the choice is much more hers than his, which is why, at the film’s end, she is the big star and Sebastian, far from a celebrity, is just the owner of a moderately-successful jazz club (selling also fried chicken). This difference becomes clear when we listen closely to the two conversations between Mia and Sebastian when one of them has to make the choice. When Sebastian announces to her that he will join the band and spend most of the time touring, Mia does not raise the question of what this means for the two of them; instead, she asks him if this is what HE really wants, i.e., if HE likes playing with this band. Sebastian replies that people (the public) like what he is doing, so his playing with the band means a permanent job and a career, with the chance to put some money aside and open his jazz club. But she insists correctly that the true question is the one of his desire: what bothers her is not that, if he chooses his career (playing with the band), he will betray her (their love relationship), but that, if he chooses this career, he will betray himself, his true calling. In the second conversation which takes place after the audition, there is no conflict and no tension: Sebastian immediately recognizes that for Mia acting is not just a career opportunity but a true calling, something she has to do to be herself, so that abandoning it would ruin the very base of her personality. There is no choice here between their love and her calling: in a paradoxical but deeply true sense, if she were to abandon the prospect of her acting in order to stay with him in LA, she would also betray their love since their love grew out of their shared commitment to a Cause.
We stumble here upon a problem passed over by Alain Badiou in his theory of Event. If the same subject is addressed by multiple Events, which of them should be given priority? Say, how should an artist decide if he cannot bring together his love life (building a life together with his/her partner) and his dedication to art? We should reject the very terms of this choice. In an authentic dilemma, one should not decide between Cause and love, between the fidelity to one or the other event. The authentic relationship between Cause and love is more paradoxical. The basic lesson of King Vidor’s Rhapsody is that, in order to gain the beloved woman’s affection, the man has to prove that he is able to survive without her, that he prefers his mission or profession to her. There are two immediate choices: (1) my professional career is what matters most to me; the woman is just an amusement, a distracting affair; (2) the woman is everything to me; I am ready to humiliate myself, to forsake all my public and professional dignity for her. They are both false, as they lead to the man being rejected by the woman. The message of true love is thus: even if you are everything to me, I can survive without you and I am ready to forsake you for my mission or profession. The proper way for the woman to test the man’s love is thus to “betray” him at the crucial moment of his career (the first public concert in the film, the key exam, the business negotiation which will decide his career). Only if he can survive the ordeal and accomplish successfully his task while deeply traumatized by her desertion, will he deserve her and she will return to him. The underlying paradox is that love, precisely as the Absolute, should not be posited as a direct goal. It should retain the status of a by-product, of something we get as an undeserved grace. Perhaps, there is no greater love than that of a revolutionary couple, where each of the two lovers is ready to abandon the other at any moment if revolution demands it.
The question is thus: how does an emancipatory-revolutionary collective which embodies the “general will” affect intense erotic passion? From what we know about love among the Bolshevik revolutionaries, something unique took place there and a new form of love couple emerged: a couple living in a permanent state of emergency, totally dedicated to the revolutionary Cause, ready to sacrifice all personal sexual fulfilment to it, even ready to abandon and betray each other if the Revolution demanded it, but simultaneously totally dedicated to each other, enjoying rare moments together with extreme intensity. The lovers’ passion was tolerated, even silently respected, but ignored in the public discourse as something of no concern to others. (There are traces of this even in what we know of Lenin’s affair with Inessa Armand.) There is no attempt at Gleichschaltung, at enforcing the unity between intimate passion and social life. The radical disjunction between sexual passion and social-revolutionary activity is fully recognized. The two dimensions are accepted as totally heterogeneous, each irreducible to the other. There is no harmony between the two—but it is this very recognition of the gap, which makes their relationship non-antagonistic.
And does the same not happen in La La Land? Does Mia not make the “Leninist” choice of her Cause? Does Sebastian not support her choice? And do they in this way not remain faithful to their love?

Tra le critiche tout court a La La Land, il film di Damian Chazelle, quella che risalta maggiormente per la sua insulsa stupidità riguarda la mancanza di coppie gay in un film che si svolge a Los Angeles, una città con una comunità gay molto consistente. Come mai i membri della sinistra benpensante che si lamentano della blanda rappresentazione delle minoranze etniche e sessuali nei film di Hollywood non criticano mai la marchiana rappresentazione della maggioranza dei lavoratori di bassa estrazione sociale? Se i lavoratori sono invisibili va bene, basta inserire qui e là qualche gay o lesbica come personaggio per sistemare tutto.
Ricordo di una simile querelle durante la prima conferenza sull’idea di Comunismo tenutasi a Londra nel 2009. Alcuni tra i partecipanti ebbero delle rimostranze sul fatto che una sola donna era fra i partecipanti, e in più che non vi fossero persone di colore o asiatici; critiche a cui Badiou rispose dicendo che era bizzarro che nessuno tra loro si fosse preoccupato della mancanza di lavoratori tra i partecipanti, proprio perché l’argomento di cui si discuteva era il Comunismo.
Tornando a La La Land, bisogna tenere a mente che il film inizia proprio con una rappresentazione delle centinaia di lavoratori precari e dei disoccupati che si recano a Hollywood nella speranza di trovare un lavoro che possa rilanciare la loro carriera lavorativa. La prima canzone (“Another Day of Sun”/ Un altro giorno di sole) li vede coinvolti cantando e danzando per far passare il tempo mentre sono bloccati sull’autostrada intasata dal traffico. Mia e Sebastian, che si trovano in mezzo a loro, ognuno nella propria auto, sono i due che riusciranno a farcela; l’eccezione (ovvia) che conferma la regola. E da questo punto di vista il loro innamoramento (che permetterà loro di trionfare) entra nell’arco narrativo proprio relegare in secondo piano l’invisibilità delle centinaia di persone che falliranno, facendo credere che sia l’amore tra i due (e non un puro colpo di fortuna) a renderli speciali e destinati al gran successo. Concorrenza spietata, è questo il suo vero nome, senza nemmeno un briciolo di solidarietà (basti pensare alle varie scene dei provini in cui Mia viene ripetutamente umiliata). Non a caso quando sento le prime battute del testo della canzone più famosa di La La Land (“City of stars, are you shining just for me / city of stars, there is so much that I can’t see” – Città di stelle, è solo per me tutto questo brillare? / Città di stelle, c’è così tanto che non posso vedere), è difficile resistere alla tentazione di intonare come risposta il più stupido e ortodosso commento marxista che si possa immaginare: “No, non sto brillando soltanto per degli
ambiziosi ed egoisti piccolo borghesi da strapazzo, brillo anche per le migliaia di lavoratori precari sfruttati di Hollywood che tu non puoi vedere e che non trionferanno, per donargli un po’ di speranza!”
Mia e Sebastian intraprendono una relazione amorosa e vanno a vivere insieme, ma i loro personaggi crescono separatamente a causa del loro desiderio di avere successo: Mia vuole diventare un’attrice, mentre Sebastian vuole aprire un club dove poter suonare del vero jazz. All’inizio Sebastian entra a far parte di una band pop-jazz, andando in giro per le tournée, in seguito, dopo il fiasco ottenuto alla premiere del suo monologo teatrale, Mia decide di lasciare Los Angeles e tornare di nuovo a casa dei suoi a Boulder City. Mentre Sebastian è a Los Angeles da solo riceve una telefonata da un direttore casting che aveva assistito allo spettacolo di Mia apprezzandolo, e vorrebbe invitarla ai provini di un film. Sebastian corre a Boulder City per persuaderla a tornare. Al casting Mia deve semplicemente raccontare una storia, allora lei inizia a cantare una canzone su sua nonna, la sua fonte di ispirazione, la persona che l’ha convinta a inseguire il sogno di recitare. Sebastian, fermamente convinto che il provino sia andato a buon fine, sostiene che Mia debba dedicare anima e corpo alla sua buona riuscita. Si professano a vicenda il proprio amore eterno, ma anche la propria incertezza verso il futuro. Cinque anni dopo Mia è un’attrice famosa, ha sposato un altro uomo con cui ha avuto una bambina. Una sera la coppia si imbatte in un jazz club. Dopo aver notato il logo con la scritta Seb’s, Mia capisce che infine Sebastian ha aperto il suo club. Sebastian scorge Mia tra la folla, la quale sembra avere un’aria turbata e desolata, e inizia a suonare il tema principale del loro amore. Facendo questo innesca una lunga sequenza in forma di sogno, in cui i due immaginano come sarebbe potuta andare finire la loro storia se la loro relazione avesse funzionato perfettamente. Il brano termina e Mia lascia il locale con il marito. Prima di uscire condivide con Sebastian un ultimo sguardo di complicità, sorridendo felice perché entrambi hanno realizzato i propri sogni.
Come è stato fatto notare da molti critici, la ricostruzione fantasiosa degli ultimi dieci minuti di film è semplicemente la storia stessa sotto forma di musical hollywoodiano; infatti ci fa vedere come sarebbe stata narrata la vicenda in un classico musical di Hollywood. Questo tipo di interpretazione conferma il tipo di riflessività del film: viene messo in scena all'interno della narrazione come la storia debba concludersi, mantenendo sempre come riferimento la formula del genere a cui si ispira. La La land è chiaramente un film autoriflessivo, è un film sui musical, ma funziona anche come film a sé, lo spettatore non deve per forza conoscere tutta la storia dei musical per poterlo apprezzare e capire (vale più o meno quello che scrisse André Bazin su Limelight di Chaplin: è un film riflessivo sul progressivo declino della carriera di un attempato Chaplin, ma funziona
benissimo anche da solo, non occorre conoscere i primi anni della sua carriera come chiave interpretativa per coglierne l'essenza). È interessante notare come quanto più la narrazione avanzi, meno numeri da musical ci troviamo di fronte, bensì della vera e propria (melo)drammaticità - fino a quando, alla fine del film, ci troviamo catapultati nuovamente in un musical che prorompe come un fantasia dei protagonisti.
Al di là degli ovvi riferimenti ad altri musical, il sottile punto di riferimento di Chazelle è Top Hat (1935), lo stravagante classico dei musical con Ginger Rogers e Fred Astaire. Molte sono le critiche positive da muovere nei confronti di Top Hat, a cominciare dallo sconvolgente mescolarsi del tip tap nella routine giornaliera (Astaire si esercita nel tip tap nella camera d'albergo sopra a quella di Rogers, questo darà origine alle sue lamentele e sarà il motivo che porterà infine la coppia ad avvicinarsi e unirsi). La canzone conclusiva ("Piccolino") e la sua rappresentazione non si ricollegano in nessun modo al finale positivo della vicenda, le parole del testo sono puramente autoreferenziali, raccontano soltanto come nasce la canzone e ci invitano a danzare sulle sue note: “sulle acque del mar Adriatico/ figli e figlie veneziani / Strimpellano una nuova melodia con le loro chitarre / È stata scritta da un Latino / Un gondoliere osservava/ la sua casa è a Brooklyn e lui guarda le stelle // Fa risuonare la sua melodia / Attraverso l'oceano / Fino all'Italia / Dove sappiamo / Che scrissero delle parole adatte / Quel tocco orecchiabile / Che battezzarono / Il Piccolino // E sappiamo che è questa la ragione / Per cui tutti in questa stagione/ Strimpellano e canticchiano una nuova melodia // Vieni al casinò / E li sentirai suonare il Piccolino / Danza con il tuo bambino / Durante la melodia dell'irresistibile Piccolino / Bevi il tuo bicchiere vino / E dopo aver gustato la tua scaloppina / Fai suonare loro il Piccolino / L'irresistibile Piccolino / E danza lungo lo scorrere di quella nuova melodia/ Il Piccolino.” E questa è l’essenza del film: non la trama approssimativa, ma la musica e il tip tap come unica ragione d’essere fine a se stessa. Parallelamente a quanto accade nella fiaba Le scarpette rosse di Andersen, il protagonista non riesce a resistere al richiamo del tip tap, prova per quella danza un’irresistibile attrazione. Il dialogo cantato tra Astaire e Rogers, perfino nel momento più intenso (come nella famosa “Dancing cheek to cheek”/ danzando guancia a guancia) è soltanto un pretesto per mettere in scena un balletto da musical.
La La Land potrebbe risultare migliore di questo semplice esercizio di stile in quanto si sofferma a descrivere gli eventi con realismo psicologico: la realtà si insinua nel mondo sognante dei musical (come nelle ultime pellicole cinematografiche sui supereroi, in cui emergono la complessità psicologica dell'eroe, i traumi subiti e i suoi dubbi più profondi). Ma è fondamentale notare come la storia realistica si concluda con una fuga in un musical fantasioso. Cosa succede dunque alla fine
del film?
A una prima e ovvia lettura lacaniana del film si potrebbe dire che la trama è ancora un'altra variante del tema "non ci sono rapporti sessuali”. Le carriere di successo dei protagonisti che saranno poi il motivo della loro separazione, sono come il ghiaccio che colpisce il Titanic nel film di James Cameron: esistono perché devono salvare il mito dell'amore che fa superare ogni ostacolo (inscenato nella fantasia finale), vale a dire per distogliere l'attenzione dall'immediata impossibilità del loro amore, dal fatto che se fossero restati insieme sarebbero diventati una coppia insoddisfatta e litigiosa. Di conseguenza la versione finale del film avrebbe dovuto rovesciare la situazione creata alla fine della storia: Mia e Sebastian sono insieme e hanno raggiunto il successo professionale, ma le loro vite sono vuote, perciò vanno in un nightclub e sognano di vivere insieme una vita felice e modesta avendo entrambi rinunciato alle loro carriere e (in un sogno all'interno del sogno) immaginano di fare la scelta opposta e di ricordare con romanticismo l'opportunità di vivere insieme intensamente che hanno perso...
Possiamo trovare un simile rovesciamento in The Family Man (di Brett Ratner, 2000). Jack Campbell, un dirigente di Wall Street single, viene a sapere che la sua ex fidanzata, Kate, ha provato a telefonargli dopo molti anni dalla loro rottura. Sta vivendo la vita che avrebbe vissuto se fosse rimasto con la sua fidanzata, una modesta vita in famiglia, in cui lui è un venditore di pneumatici per automobili per conto del padre di Kate, mentre lei è un avvocato che opera per associazioni senza scopo di lucro. Proprio quando Jack sta finalmente scoprendo il vero valore della sua nuova vita, la magia finisce e viene catapultato di nuovo nella sua vita agiata nel giorno di Natale. Riesce a stringere un accordo per ottenere una grande acquisizione per la sua azienda in modo da entrare in contatto con Kate, che nel frattempo si è concentrata sulla sua carriera diventando un avvocato benestante per una grande corporazione. Dopo aver scoperto che Kate lo aveva chiamato per restituirgli le sue cose, dal momento che si sarebbe trasferita a Parigi, lui corre in aeroporto e le racconta della famiglia che avevano nell’universo alternativo, in modo da conquistare di nuovo il suo amore. Kate gli concede un caffè in aeroporto, lasciando intendere che avranno un futuro insieme. Quindi, quello che otteniamo è una soluzione di compromesso della peggior specie: In qualche modo i due prendono il meglio da entrambi gli universi, restando ricchi capitalisti ma allo stesso tempo una coppia innamorata che prova interesse verso tematiche umanitarie. Per farla breve resteranno sia con la botte piena che con la moglie ubriaca, come si suol dire, e perlomeno La La Land evita questo ottimismo da quattro soldi.
Quindi, cosa accade in realtà alla fine del film? Ovviamente Mia e Sabastian non decidono soltanto di privilegiare le loro carriere a discapito della loro relazione. Si dovrebbe dire, almeno, che entrambi ottengono il successo nelle loro rispettive carriere e realizzano i loro sogni grazie alla storia che hanno avuto, il loro amore agisce come una specie di mediatore che svanisce una volta esaurito il suo compito: anziché diventare un ostacolo per il loro successo lo facilita. Si può dire, quindi, che il film ribalta la classica formula dei film di Hollywood di formare una coppia proprio in quanto entrambi realizzano i loro sogni, ma non come coppia? E questo ribaltamento è qualcosa di più della semplice attitudine postmoderna e narcisistica di preferire il successo personale a discapito dell’amore? In altre parole, e se il loro amore non fosse affatto un Evento Amoroso? E inoltre, e se il loro “sogno” professionale non fosse dedicarsi anima e corpo sposando la Causa dell’arte bensì il semplice sogno di avere una carriera professionale? E se nessuno degli elementi in gioco contrapposti (carriera, amore, ecc…) descrivesse una dedizione incondizionata che va di pari passo con un vero Evento? Il loro non è vero amore, il loro perseverare nella carriera è fine a se stesso, non è uno sposare la causa dell’arte incondizionatamente. In breve, Il tradimento di Mia e Sebastian è molto più profondo del semplice scegliere un’alternativa a discapito dell’altra: la loro stessa esistenza è già tradire un’esistenza dedita a uno scopo. Questo è anche il motivo per cui la tensione tra le due alternative non rappresenta tanto un tragico dilemma esistenziale, bensì una leggera incertezza, una tenue oscillazione.
Questo tipo di lettura è fin troppo semplice in quanto non tiene conto dell’enigma della fantasia finale: di chi è il sogno, di lui o di lei? Non è un sogno di Mia (è lei l’osservatore - sognatore), interamente concentrato sul suo destino di andare a Parigi a girare il film e tutto quello che ne consegue? Al contrario di quanto sostengono alcuni critici, che il film sia incentrato sulla figura maschile e che Sebastian sia il soggetto attivo nella coppia; si può affermare che sia Mia il perno da cui si snoda la trama del film: è molto più lei a compiere le scelte rispetto a lui; motivo per cui alla fine del film è lei la star e Sebastian, ben lontano dalla celebrità, è il proprietario di un ordinario jazz club di discreto successo (che vende anche ali di pollo). Questa differenza diventa più chiara quando ascoltiamo attentamente le due conversazioni tra Mia e Sebastian nel momento in cui uno dei due si trova di fronte a una scelta. Quando Sebastian le annuncia che entrerà a far parte della band e trascorrerà gran parte del tempo in tournée, Mia non gli chiede cosa comporterà questa scelta per entrambi, gli chiede invece se è questo quello che lui vuole, vale a dire suonare con quella band. Sebastian risponde che alle persone (al pubblico) piace quello che suona, quindi la scelta di suonare con loro significa un lavoro a tempo indeterminato e una carriera sicura, con la remota possibilità di mettere dei soldi da parte e aprire il suo jazz club. Ma lei insiste giustamente affermando che l’unica cosa a contare è ciò che lui desidera: a preoccuparla non è tanto il fatto che se sceglierà la sua
carriera (quella di suonare con la band), tradirà lei (la loro storia), bensì che se se sceglierà la carriera tradirà sé stesso, le sue vere aspirazioni. Nella seconda conversazione presa in esame, che ha luogo dopo il provino, non c’è traccia di screzi o tensioni: Sebastian riconosce immediatamente che per Mia recitare non è soltanto un’opportunità lavorativa, ma un’autentica vocazione, qualcosa che deve fare per sé stessa, e abbandonare il suo sogno significherebbe perdere il pilastro fondamentale della sua personalità. Non c’è nessuna scelta da fare tra il loro amore e la sua vocazione qui: in senso più paradossale e profondo, se Mia dovesse abbandonare la possibilità di recitare per restare insieme a lui a Los Angeles, finirebbe per tradire anche il loro amore, dal momento che il sentimento è stato alimentato dalla condivisione della loro devozione a una Causa.
Ci imbattiamo qui in un problema analizzato da Alain Badiou nella sua teoria degli Eventi: se la stessa circostanza è attraversata da eventi multipli, a quale di essi dovrebbe essere data la priorità? Come dovrebbe agire un artista che non riesce a conciliare la sua vita sentimentale (costruire una vita insieme al/alla proprio/a partner) e il suo impegno nell'arte? Dovremmo rifiutare a priori questo tipo di scelta. In presenza di un vero e proprio dilemma non si dovrebbe mai scegliere tra Causa e amore, se essere fedele all’uno o all'altro evento. Il vero rapporto che intercorre tra Causa e amore è più paradossale. La lezione fondamentale del film Rapsodia (1954) di King Vidor è che per conquistare il cuore della donna amata l'uomo deve dimostrare di saper vivere senza di lei, che è disposto ad anteporre il suo scopo e la sua professione a lei. Due sono le scelte immediatamente possibili: (1) la mia carriera professionale è ciò che più conta per me, la donna è soltanto un diletto, una semplice svago; (2) quella donna è tutto per me, sono pronto a umiliarmi, sono pronto a rinunciare a tutta la mia dignità pubblica e professionale per lei. Entrambe le scelte sono inconcludenti in quanto porteranno l'uomo a essere rifiutato dalla donna. La sintesi del vero amore è la seguente: sebbene tu sia tutto per me, posso sopravvivere anche senza di te e sono pronto a rinunciare a te per il mio scopo o per la mia professione. Il modo più corretto che ha una donna per verificare l'amore dell'uomo è di "tradirlo" nel momento cruciale della sua carriera lavorativa (il primo concerto di fronte al pubblico durante il film, l'esame più importante, la trattativa d'affari che deciderà le sorti della sua carriera). Soltanto se riuscirà a sopravvivere alla prova e a raggiungere il suo obiettivo nonostante il trauma subito per la diserzione della donna allora potrà meritare il suo amore e lei tornerà fra le sue braccia. Il paradosso qui sottinteso è che non ci si dovrebbe prefissare l'amore, inteso precisamente come Assoluto, come obiettivo principale. Dovrebbe mantenere il suo status di obiettivo secondario, qualcosa che ci viene immeritatamente concesso per mezzo di una grazia. Forse non c'è amore più grande di quello di una coppia rivoluzionaria, dove ognuno dei due amanti è pronto ad abbandonare l'altro per il bene della rivoluzione.
Perciò la vera domanda è questa: come può una collettività che si professi emancipatorio – rivoluzionaria, che incorpori la “volontà generale” influenzare il modo di vivere l’intensa passione amorosa? Da quel che sappiamo riguardo all’amore tra i rivoluzionari bolscevichi, all’interno delle loro comunità accadde qualcosa di unico ed emerse un nuovo tipo di coppia: una coppia che viveva in perenne stato di emergenza, dedita unicamente alla Causa della rivoluzione, pronta a sacrificare qualsiasi appagamento sessuale per essa, i cui soggetti coinvolti erano perfino disposti a tradirsi a vicenda se la Rivoluzione l’avesse richiesto, ma allo stesso tempo totalmente devoti l’uno all’altra, trascorrendo i rari momenti insieme con straordinaria intensità. La passione amorosa era tollerata, rispettata tacitamente, ma ignorata nel dibattito pubblico in quanto materia di nessun interesse per gli altri. (Alcune tracce di questo modo di intendere l’amore si trovano anche in ciò che sappiamo della relazione tra Lenin e Inessa Armand). Non vi è alcun tentativo di Gleichschaltung (allineamento) nel rafforzare la coesione tra l’intima passione e la vita sociale. La radicale separazione tra passione amorosa e le attività rivoluzionarie è ampiamente riconosciuta. Le due dimensioni sono riconosciute come aspetti totalmente eterogenei, nessuno dei due inglobato nell’altro. Non vi è totale armonia tra essi, ma è proprio il riconoscimento del divario che intercorre tra i due a rendere il loro rapporto non competitivo.
E non accade la stessa cosa in La La Land? Mia non compie la scelta “leninista” di privilegiare la sua Causa? Sebastian non appoggia in fondo la sua scelta? E in questo modo non rimangono forse fedeli al loro amore?
