Source text - Spanish Han pasado 14 años desde mi divorcio, cuando dejé la casa de mis hijos. Por tal motivo estuve viviendo en las calles. Hablo en el pasado porque realmente ya no me considero así. Sin embargo, conozco muy bien lo que es la calle, y sobrevivir a través del tiempo.
Desde el punto de vista físico y mental, he pasado por un momento difícil. Tiene que ver en parte con el alcoholismo. Yo sí la regué con ese problema, pero voy desarrollando una conciencia y un autoconocimiento para llegar a una autorrealización. Voy en camino. He actuado de forma inconsciente y he dañado a quienes me rodean, creyendo tener la razón, y no la tuve; no reconocía la otra parte.
Yo supe de Mi Valedor a través de [el valedor] José cuando vivíamos en el albergue. La revista llegó a mi vida como una herramienta. Este año ha sido un proceso, más que económico, de encuentro: una verdadera confirmación de que las cosas están bien, y de que pueden estar mejor. Mis hermanos me apoyan todavía, y eso me ha ayudado. No estoy solo. Agradezco ese respaldo, junto al de Mi Valedor.

Translation - English It’s been 14 years since I got divorced, when I left my family home. That’s the reason I was living in the streets. I’m talking in the past tense because I don’t really consider myself in that situation anymore. However, I know what it is to be in the street and how to survive over time.
From a physical and mental point of view, I had a really tough time. That was partly due to alcoholism. I messed up, but I am continuing to develop a conscience and knowledge to reach a point of self-accomplishment. I’m on the right path. I acted in an irresponsible manner and I hurt those around me, considering myself to be right, even though I wasn’t. I didn’t acknowledge that part.
I had heard of Mi Valedor through José, another supporter of the magazine, when we lived in the hostel. The magazine came into my life as a means of support. More than an economic process, this year has been a process of interaction… it has totally confirmed to me that things are good, and that they can be better. My siblings still support me, and that has helped me. I am not alone. I am grateful for their support, along with that of Mi Valedor.
I am gaining confidence and I am coming into contact with people. It’s working for me: before I sold 1, 2, maybe 3 magazines. Now, if I aim to sell 40, I will… and maybe even more. If you genuinely want to work and be a better person, you really have to apply yourself. I’m going for it and I know that I can do it.
For me, Mi Valedor is going to be the world’s number one magazine in the future. It is a medium and I want to promote it. There are lots of people that need help like I did at that time. The world is no longer apprehensive about war, but instead we are eager to teach and learn. I’ve discovered that I have that ability to help people. Right now, I’m on my way in search of knowledge in Querétaro, a state in north-central Mexico, and if things go well I’m going to promote and publicise it.

2017 has been a turbulent year at the best of times - politically, economically and socially. But all experiences, positive and negative, go toward shaping us as people. Ahead of Christmas and New Year, vendors from across the world look back on the year just passed, tell us what it meant to them, and reveal their hopes and aspirations for next year.
Allan, a proud Aboriginal man from Wurundjeri country, has been selling The Big Issue Australia in Melbourne for 21 years
My most memorable moment of 2017 was taking part in the Aboriginal march on ‘Invasion Day’, that’s Australia Day (26 January), down the main streets of Melbourne’s CBD. I met one of my cousins who’s Aboriginal, and I’ve never met him before. And I’m starting to meet other cousins and making connections. It was a proud moment walking down Bourke St, you’ve got 10,000 people around you.
I’m hoping the Referendum (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recognition in the Australian Constitution) will be held*. I’m Wurundjeri born. This is my people’s country, this is my country, and I don’t understand why we haven’t got it yet. We can sit down with the Government and decide, they can have their say, we can have our say, and we can compromise. And we both agree. And then it’s fair.
*As it stands, the Australian Constitution, the nation’s founding document, makes no mention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Constitution can only be changed through a Referendum – a national vote by all Australians.

My most memorable moment of 2017 was when my favourite pop group retired from their singing career.
I had never cooked much in my life and had always been kind of a loner. But for the first time in my life, I cooked curry with my fellow vendors as a team. We then shared the curry with others. It was good. This was my biggest achievement.
Changing my sales pitch has been a challenged but I am trying to get used to it.
I was able to move into temporary accommodation that is run by The Big Issue Japan where I can prepare for life in more stable accommodation. I never really wanted to move into an apartment before, so this is a surprise to me. It feels like I moved one step up the stairs, a step away from the street life. I will live here for 6 months. I am looking forward to being able to move into my own flat next year!

Antes de Navidad y año nuevo, vendedores de todas las partes del mundo recuerdan el año que acaba de pasar, recuerdan lo que significaba para ellos, y nos revelan sus esperanzas y aspiraciones para el próximo año.

Allan, un orgulloso hombre Aborigen del país de Wurundjeri, ha estado vendiendo The Big Issue Australia en Melbourne durante 21 años.
Para mí el momento inolvidable de 2017 fue participar en el desfile aborigen en el “Día de Invasión”, es decir, el día de Australia (el 26 de enero), por las calles principales del Distrito Central de Negocios (DCN) de Melbourne. Me encontré con un primo mío aborigen; nunca le había conocido. Estoy empezando a conocer a otros primos y estableciendo conexiones. Fue un momento de orgullo el hecho de andar por la calle Bourke (una de las calles principales del DCN). Había 10.000 personas que me rodeaban.
Espero que el Referéndum (para el reconocimiento de los indígenas y de los isleños del estrecho de Torres la Constitución) tenga lugar.* Nací siendo un wurundjeri. Para mí, el momento inolvidable de 2017 fue cuando mi grupo de pop preferido terminó su carrera musical.
Nunca había cocinado mucho en mi vida y siempre había estado un tipo ‘solitario’. Pero por primera vez en mi vida, cociné un curry con mis compañeros, como un equipo. Luego, lo compartimos con otras personas más. Sinceramente, me gustó la experiencia. Para mí fue mi mejor logro.
Me ha supuesto un reto cambiar mi charla promocional, pero estoy intentando acostumbrarme.
He podido mudarme a un alojamiento temporal manejado por The Big Issue Japón, donde me puedo preparar para la vida en un sitio más estable. La verdad es que antes no había querido nunca mudarme a un alojamiento, así que eso me sorprendió. Me parece que he dado un paso adelante, es decir un paso más lejos de la vida callejera. Viviré aquí durante 6 meses. ¡Tengo ganas de poder mudarme a mi propio piso el año que viene!

I am a final year Translating and Interpreting student at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. From a young age, I have been interested in learning languages, and this is what brought me to choosing a four year degree in this. At university I have done translations from a wide variety of subject areas which I believe gives me the basing I need to go on to become a professional translator and find my 'niche'. During my time at university, I have also done several volunteer translations for organisations.
