I am a 21-year-old student at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, seeking a Bachelor's degree in Mandarin Chinese. I volunteered at an ESL summer camp in Beijing during the summer of 2017 and subsequently participated in a study abroad semester at Capital Normal University (首都师范大学）where I improved my skills in speaking, listening comprehension, and writing in Chinese and also learned about the culture and history of China.
All my life I have been passionate about learning languages; I grew up in a suburb of Chicago (Aurora, IL) surrounded by Spanish-speakers and rapidly picked up the language after beginning formal foreign language education in middle school. I have dabbled in any language available to me, including Japanese, Korean, and American Sign Language before settling on Chinese as a major. Since I have been heavily focusing on Chinese, my other language skills have unfortunately weakened.
I am passionate about cross-cultural communication and my main career interests are ESL teaching, linguistics (particularly comparative and sociolinguistics, with a curiosity about corpus linguistics), and translation (with a future goal of becoming either a simultaneous translator and/or a medical translator).
