English to Italian: Extract from the novel Pigeon by Alys Conran
Source text - English Crazy is when you’re dreaming even when you’re awake. Crazy is when you can’t keep things in order, can’t hold days and nights apart. I consider it. Dad. I look outside at the wiry, stooping shapes in the garden. They were always just keeping us company, but now, looking at them, they look frightening, like zombies. Crazy. I think of the chicken meat he’d packaged up at the factory, all sucked of air. Crazy.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Efa sighs.
“I don’t really know,” she says. “I didn’t want you to ever sit by that bed, with Nain and those flowers, and with him looking as if, perhaps, he’d seen you before.”
I don’t understand her. I don’t understand all of this story. Why not tell me? Why not. I needed him. I feel it, the big heavy thing around my ribs. Grief Nain called it. Grief. Grief is being so angry. So angry. Dad is alive, and sick and I need him. Dad was alive all this time and they knew he was. They told me lies. They told me lies. Hot salty tears down my cheeks. Raggy, sore breathing. My shoulders are shaking. I’m shaking. Efa’s hug is like a mother. Warm. The burning turns to her Patchuli scent.
Translation - Italian Pazzo è quando sogni anche se sei sveglio. Pazzo è quando non riesci a tenere le cose in ordine, non riesci a distinguere il giorno dalla notte. Ci penso a fondo. Papà. Guardo le figure curve e rinsecchite fuori al giardino. Per tutto il tempo ci hanno fatto semplicemente compagnia, ma ora che le guardo mi sembrano spaventose, come degli zombie. Pazzo. Penso alla carne di pollo che impacchettava alla fabbrica, con tutta l’aria risucchiata via. Pazzo.
“Perché non me lo hai detto?”
Efa sospira.
“In realtà non lo so,” dice “non avrei mai voluto che ti sedessi affianco a quel letto con Nain e quei fiori, vicino a lui che ti guarda come se, forse, ti ha già vista in passato.”
Non la capisco. Non capisco niente di tutta questa storia. Perché non mi hanno detto niente? Perché no. Io avevo bisogno di lui. La sento, quella cosa grossa e pesante tra le costole. Dolore la chiamava Nain. Dolore. Dolore è essere così arrabbiati. Così arrabbiati. Papà è vivo, e malato e io ho bisogno di lui. Papà era vivo tutto il tempo e loro lo sapevano. Mi hanno riempito di bugie. Mi hanno riempito di bugie. Lacrime calde e salate mi scendono sulle guance. Mi tremano le spalle. Io sto tremando. L’abbraccio di Efa è come quello di una madre. Caldo. Il calore si trasforma nel suo profumo al Patchuli.
