English to Korean: The Smell of a Hanok/여름 날 한옥의 냄새 General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English The Smell of a Hanok in Summer
As a foreigner living in a hanok, I often think about hanoks and write about them – especially about how the hanok changes from season to season. In winter I wrote of the feeling of warmth that only hanoks have, even in the midst of the surrounding cold weather. But last week as the monsoon began, with all the thick heat and humidity of summer, I came to realize that the essence of a hanok in summer is not perceived though touch or though sight. The soul of a hanok in summer is in its smell.
In the US we often said that smell is the sense which has the most memory – that smelling a scent from the past can immediately transport us back to a moment or a memory long gone. For many Americans, the passing smell of freshly mowed, wet grass can immediately bring to mind long forgotten memories of childhood houses and lawns, baseball, and summer picnics sitting on the grass. The same is true for a hanok. The summer re-awakens long dormant smells, and brings back memories from years past. This first smell of summer can immediately bring me back to the summer day, three years ago, when I first visited this hanok. The smell of that summer day is the same.
The first impression when I enter a hanok in summer is the unforgettable smell of wood. This smell is not entirely absent in winter, but when the summer’s heat and humidity arrive, it brings out the fragrance more vibrantly, filling the nose like the smell of a wooden sauna. Then there is the smell of the장판지 (한지), which covers the hanok floor. This paper is brushed by hand with a layer of 콩기름과 들기름, filling the house with its fragrant aroma. Somehow magically, in summer it smells not just like oil, but also like dates and cinnamon, filling the house. And from the old furniture and chests, the summer brings a renewed and warm smell of lacquer (옻칠)
But perhaps most unforgettable of all, there is the smell of the summer rain. Sitting on the 마루 under the 기와, sheltered from the last drops of rain as they fall, there is the smell of the wet soil of the 마당, and the soaked wood of the 마루 in the humid, hot air. There is a feeling of safety and warmth as the rain stops and gives way to a beautiful sunset – which are really only this clear and beautiful during monsoon season. Wherever I go in the world, even when I am old, it is these smells which will always bring be back to this place – to this hanok in Seoul - just as even now the smell of freshly mowed, wet grass, will always bring me back to the summer picnics and lawns of my youth.
Translation - Korean

A) 4인이서 플레이.
