This debacle has important lessons for the left everywhere. In an era where traditional left and social-democratic parties have dramatically weakened ties with their erstwhile working-class bases, they will very rarely, if ever, get to decide the terms on which people revolt against the neoliberal order, precisely because they are not leading the people. The people are, in fact, out in front of them. If the left then reacts in horror, and recoils from the people and the prospect of fundamental change, the leadership of anti-establishment revolts will fall, merely by default, to the right.
Esse fracasso tem lições importantes para a esquerda do mundo todo. Em uma era em que os tradicionais partidos de esquerda e social-democratas enfraqueceram tragicamente seus laços com as suas antigas bases na classe trabalhadora, eles raramente poderão, se alguma vez poderão, decidir as formas com as quais o povo se revoltará contra a ordem neoliberal. Precisamente porque eles não lideram o povo. O povo está, na verdade, marchando adiantado em relação a esses partidos. Source text - English In the days that followed he was moody and unapproachable. He lived, of course, entirely in the drawing-room, and the lack of air and exercise began to tell sadly on his health. He passed his time in drinking tea and looking at the photographs. He would stand for hours gazing at the photographs of papa's uncle's friend in his Bengal uniform--talking to it, sometimes swearing bitterly at it. His mind was visibly failing.
At length the crash came. They carried him upstairs in a raging delirium of fever. The illness that followed was terrible. He recognized no one, not even papa's uncle's friend in his Bengal uniform. At times he would start up from his bed and shriek, "Well, I think I..." and then fall back upon the pillow with a horrible laugh. Then, again, he would leap up and cry, "Another cup of tea and more photographs! More photographs! Har! Har!"
At length, after a month of agony, on the last day of his vacation, he passed away. They say that when the last moment came, he sat up in bed with a beautiful smile of confidence playing upon his face, and said, "Well—the angels are calling me; I'm afraid I really must go now. Good afternoon."
And the rushing of his spirit from its prison-house was as rapid as a hunted cat passing over agarden fence.

Ele passava seu tempo bebendo chá e olhando as fotografias. Chegava a ficar por quatro horas encarando as fotos do amigo do tio do papai vestido com o a farda bengali – conversando com elas, às vezes as xingando amargamente. Sua mente estava visivelmente se deteriorando.
Com o tempo, o colapso aconteceu. Eles subiram as escadas com ele num severo delírio febril. A doença que veio em seguida foi terrível. Ele não reconhecia ninguém, nem mesmo o amigo do tio do papai vestido com o a farda bengali. Em alguns momentos ele se levantava de repente de sua cama e gritava – Bom.
