Chinese to English: The ancient city walls of Xi’an General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Architecture
Source text - Chinese 中国拥有数百座古代城墙，其中以北京、南京、西安的古城墙规模最大，但北京、南京古城墙先后被拆毁或严重残缺，而始建于公元1370年的西安古城墙迄今仍保存完整。日本天皇访华来西安时，放着“世界第八大奇迹”秦俑坑不看，却登上了始建于600多年前的西门城楼，领略了这座古代城墙的雄姿。
Translation - English China boasts hundreds of ancient city walls, among which Beijing, Nanjing and Xi’an have the largest ones on scale. However, ancient walls in Beijing and Nanjing were demolished and ruined in history, while the Xian ancient city walls built since 1370 remain intact today. During Emperor of Japan‘s visit to Xi’an, he left alone the Terracotta Warriors, which is the “World’s 8th Miracle”, but instead ascended the west gate city tower which was built 600 years ago to appreciate its splendor.
The word “城墙”(chengqiang) was derived from the character “城”(cheng). According to the explanation in explaining words,”城”’s original meaning is to build a country in which people are protected by building, because “城”is the interchangeable form of the word “盛”,which means being inclusive to people. The Great Wall, which honored as the Chinese people’s backbone, contains the word “城”in its Chinese name, also referring to “city wall”. With the development of the society, the word “城”develops the meaning of “city” today. The word “城” appeared firstly in Jin language of the Zhou Dynasty, and its shape vividly reflected the military use of ancient city walls. The military end of the city walls was to protect property, and it also embodied the strict patriarchal system in its shape and scale, which is closely related to ideology. Obviously, the rulers build the walls to protect themselves and show their national prestige. Today’s Xi’an city wall was one of the most famous buildings in Chinese history. The construction started under Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang’s order from the 3rd year of Hongwu Ruling years in the Ming Dynasty (1370), and was completed 8 years later in 1378. It was constructed on the basis of the emperor city of the Sui and Tang Dynasty, and was rebuilt in many dynasties. Basically, it maintains the original look of the building style in feudal society, and reflects the outstanding architecture achievement in ancient China.
