Of all organisms born, the majority die before they come of age. Of the minority that survive and breed, an even smaller minority will have a descendant alive a thousand generations hence. This tiny minority of a minority, this progenitorial elite, is all that future generations will be able to call ancestral. Ancestors are rare, descendants are common.
All organisms that have ever lived-every animal and plant, all bacteria and all fungi, every creeping thing, and all readers of this book-can look back at their ancestors and make the following proud claim: Not a single one of our ancestors died in infancy. They all reached adulthood, and every single one was capable of finding at least one heterosexual partner and of successfully copulating. Not a single one of our ancestors was felled by an enemy, or by a virus, or by a misjudged footstep on a cliff edge, before bringing at least one child into the world. Source text - English Once upon a time, there was a beautiful village. Near the river bank, in a small hut, lived a hen.
The hen laid 12 eggs, in which, 10 eggs hatched in to chicks, but 2 remained as eggs.
The hen left the 2 unhatched eggs in the barn, and went outside to look for food with 10 little chicks.
Meanwhile, one egg from those 2 unhatched eggs came out by tapping the egg shell with her little nose from the inside.
The poor little chick, searched everywhere for her mum as soon as she comes outside.
Sadly, she can’t find her mother and sees that the place is almost deserted.
This makes the little chick very sad so she decides to go search for her mother all by herself.
As soon as it decides to go search for the mother, it flapped her feathers, and starts travelling from the barn.
As the chick began walking on its little legs, she sees a cow feeding on some green grass.
The chick began to stare at the cow with a lot of enthusiasm.
After a few minutes, the enormous cow looked at the little chicken and asked, "What are you looking for?"
“Why are you looking at me all surprised?” asked the cow.
"Are you my mother?" the chick asked innocently.
The cow took pity seeing the little chick's innocence and said, "Look at me. Look how huge and tall I am.
Your mother is way smaller in size than me."
"Oh! my mother is smaller than you? " asked the chick.
She then went on her way to continue her search.
After some time, the chick saw a goat eating some leaves.
She went to the goat and asked, "You seem smaller than a cow, are you my mother?" asked the little chick.
"Yes. I’m smaller than a cow but, I have 4 legs.
However, just like you, your mother has 2 legs and 2 wings on her " said the goat.
The little chick became very sad listening to what the goat said.
She decided to walk a little further and continue the search for her mother.
As she walked a little further, the chick heard a “caw caw” sound.
The little chick remembered the goats words and thought, maybe the crow is my mother.
So she asks the crow, "You have 2 legs and wings, so are you my mother?”
"Yes! It’s true that I have 2 legs and wings, but I can fly higher than your mother.
Also, your mother is bigger than me in size, her legs are taller than mine, and your mother doesn't caw like me."
replies the crow. Hearing this makes the poor chick sad, and by seeing the chick’s sadness, even the crow feels bad for the little one.
The crow then said, "Don’t be sad. Just go a little further and try.
You will definitely find your mother.” Saying this, crow flew away.
The conversation with the crow brought back the chicks inspiration, and she started going a little further.
With her cute feet, she quickly walked along the side of the pond and there, she found a duck along with her ducklings.
The little chick was so happy to see some resemblance in the duck which the crow told her about, and she ran into the duck crying “Mother mother!”
The duck was stunned to see the little chick.
"Why are you so surprised mother? I’m your baby.” said the chick.
No dear, "I’m not your mother." said the mother duck.
Tears ran down the chick’s cheek. The poor little chicken started to sob thinking she’ll never find her mother again.
This melted the mother duck’s heart.
She looked at the chick with a lot of love and said, "Why are you crying dear? Let me help you”.
The chicken began to tell the duck her sad story from the beginning.
The duck replied with a kind heart saying, "Oh dear, your mother doesn’t "quack" like me. Your mother says "Kokorokko!" .
There was a pigeon on a tree nearby and he was listening to the whole conversation between duck and the little chick
He decided to help the chick and flew towards her. "Go to the end of this pond, and you might find your mum over there," said the pigeon and flew away.
A Chicken makes the exact same sound as duck does.
As the chick went a little further, she heard a sound. "Kokorrokko!".
She quickly ran and followed the sound.
A little further, she saw a hen with 2 legs, wings bigger than the crow, and the hen was even saying "Kokkorokko!"
The chick decided that this is her mother, and calls out "Mother! Mother!”
The hen turns around when she hears this sound and she immediately recognises that it’s her child.
The Mother hen called the baby chick to come near to her and the little chick was so happy to finally meet her mother.
Mother hen took the baby chick in in her arms and showered the baby with love in between her wings.
Mother chicken said to the hen, "Why didn’t you stay in the house dear? I left to get you some food and I would have returned to you by now."
The Mother hen eagerly wanted to know how the little chicken came out to find her, so she asked the baby chick enthusiastically.
The little chick explained everything that happened so far with her cute voice.
She told her mother how bravely she took this adventurous trip to find her.
By the end of the chick’s story, the mother hen was awestruck.
But mostly, she was so happy to have discovered just how brave her baby chick was.
Translation - Persian (Farsi) روزی روزگاری ده زیبایی بود که در آنجا، نزدیک رودخانه، در لانهای کوچک، مرغی زندگی میکرد.
مرغ دوازده تا تخم میگذارد که ده تا از آنها جوجه میشود، اما دو تا از تخم مرغها همانطور باقی میماند.
مرغ دو تخم مرغ نرسیده را در لانه میگذارد و با ده جوجه کوچکش میرود بیرون، به دنبال غذا.
در همین حین، یکی از تخم مرغها ترک برمیدارد و جوجهای از داخل با نوک کوچکش پوسته تخم مرغ را میشکند و خارج میشود.
جوجه کوچولوی نحیف، به محض اینکه بیرون میآید، به دنبال مادرش همه جا را میگردد.
اما متاسفانه، نمیتواند مادرش را پیدا کند و میبیند که لانه تقریبا رها شده است.
جوجه کوچولو خیلی ناراحت میشود و تصمیم میگیرد که خودش به دنبال مادرش برود.
به محض اینکه مصمم میشود به دنبال مادرش بگردد، بالهایش را بهم میزند و از انبار راهی میشود.
همین که جوجه با پاهای کوچکش به راه میافتد، گاوی را میبیند که در علفزاری سبز مشغول چراست.
جوجه با شور و شوق فراوان، خیره خیره به تماشای گاو بزرگ و بلندقد میایستد.
پس از چند دقیقه، گاو تنومد نگاهی به جوجه میاندازد و میپرسد:"چیه؟ چی میخوای؟
چرا اینجوری با تعجب منو نیگا می کنی؟"
جوجه مظلومانه میپرسد: "شما مامان منی؟"
گاو که مظلومیت جوجه را میبیند دلش میسوزد و میگوید: "منو نیگا کن. ببین چقد گنده و قد بلندم. مامان تو خیلی کوچیکتر از منه."
جوجه میپرسد: "اوه، مامان من کوچیکتر از شماس؟"
بعد راه خود را میگیرد و میرود تا به جستجویش ادامه دهد.
جوجه پس از مدتی بزی را میبیند که مشغول خوردن برگ است.
پیش بز میرود و میپرسد: "شما کوچیکتر از گاو به نظر میان، مامان من نیستی؟" جوجه کوچولو میپرسد.
"بله، من کوچیکتر از گاوم، اما من چار تا پا دارم.
مامان تو عین خودت، دو تا پا و دوتا بال داره." بز میگوید.
جوجه کوچولو از شنیدن حرفهای بز خیلی ناراحت میشود.
تصمیم میگیرد کمی بیشتر راه برود و به جستجوی مادرش ادامه بدهد.
کمی که بیشتر راه میرود صدای قار قاری به گوشش میرسد.
جوجه کوچولو حرفهای گاو را به یاد میآورد و با خود فکر میکند شاید مادر من کلاغ است.
پس از کلاغ میپرسد: "شما دو تا پا و دو تا بال دارین، یعنی شما مامان منی؟"
"بله، درسته که من دو تا پا و دو تا بال دارم، اما بلندتر از مامان تو پرواز میکنم.
تازه، مامان تو از من بزرگتره، پاهاش از پاهای من بلندتره. بعدش هم، مامان تو مثل من قار قار نمیکنه. " کلاغ جواب میدهد.
شنیدن این حرفها باعث میشود جوجه بیچاره غمگین شود، با دیدن غم جوجه، حتی دل کلاغ هم برای طفلک میسوزد.
کلاغ سپس میگوید: "غصه نخور. کمی بیشتر راه برو و تلاش کن.
حتما مادرت رو پیدا می کنی." بعد از گفتن این حرف، کلاغ بال میزند و دور میشود.
حرف زدن با کلاغ به جوجه قوت قلب میدهد و راه میافتد تا کمی جلوتر برود.
جوجه با پاهای نازش، تند تند از کنار برکه رد میشود و در آنجا به یک اردک و جوجههایش برمیخورد.
جوجه کوچولو وقتی میبیند اردک به چیزی که کلاغ برایش تعریف کرده شباهت دارد، خیلی خوشحال میشود. به طرف اردک میدود و داد میزند: "مامان، مامان!"
اردک از دیدن جوجه کوچولو متعجب میشود.
"مامان چرا اینقد تعجب کردی؟ من جوجتم." جوجه میگوید.
نه عزیزم، "من مامانت نیسم." اردک مادر میگوید.
اشک از گونههای جوجه سرازیر میشود. جوجه کوچولوی بیچاره با این فکر که دیگر هرگز مادرش را نخواهد دید زیر گریه میزند.
دل اردک مادر برایش میسوزد.
نگاهی پر محبت به جوجه میاندازد و میگوید: "چرا گریه میکنی؟ بیا کمکت کنم."
جوجه داستان غم انگیز خود را از ابتدا برای اردک تعریف میکند.
اردک با دل رحمی میگوید: "آه عزیزم، مامانت مثل من کواک کواک نمیکنه. مامانت می گه "قد قد قدا!"
روی درختی در همان نزدیکی کبوتری نشسته بود و به حرفهای اردک و جوجه کوچولو گوش میداد.
تصمیم گرفت به جوجه کمک کند پس به سمتش پرواز کرد. "برو ته این برکه، شاید مادرت رو اونجا پیدا کنی." کبوتر این را میگوید و پرواز کنان دور میشود.
یکی از جوجهها دقیقا همان صدایی را درمیآورد که اردک در میآورد.
وقتی جوجه کمی دورتر میشود، صدای قد قد به گوشش میرسد.
به سرعت میدود و صدا را دنبال میکند.
کمی دورتر، مرغی را میبیند که دو پا و دو بال بزرگتر از پا و بال کلاغ دارد و قد قد هم میکند.
جوجه مطمئن میشود که این دیگر مادرش است و صدا میزند: "مامان، مامان."
مرغ با شنیدن این صدا بر میگردد و فورا متوجه میشود که این جوجه خودش است.
مرغ مادر جوجهاش را صدا میزند تا نزدش برود و جوجه کوچولو از این که بلخره مادرش را دیده بسیار خوشحال میشود.
مرغ مادر جوجه نوزادش را در آغوش میگیرد و او را در بین بالهایش غرق عشق میکند.
مرغ مادر به جوجه میگوید: "عزیزم چرا تو لونه نموندی؟ من رفته بودم غذا بیارم و تا حالا برگشته بودم پیشت."
مرغ مادر با اشتیاق میخواست بداند چگونه جوجه کوچولو برای پیدا کردن او بیرون رفته بود، به همین خاطر مشتاقانه از جوجه سوال میکرد.
جوجه کوچولو با صدای نازش هر چه را که اتفاق افتاده بود تعریف کرد.
به مادرش گفت که چطور با شجاعت برای پیدا کردنش این سفر پرماجرا را پیش گرفته است.
وقتی داستان جوجه به اتمام رسید، مرغ مادر بهتزده شده بود.
اما بیشتر خوشحال بود که میدید چه جوجه شجاعی دارد.
