English to Portuguese: Nioh's Setting General field: Other Detailed field: Games / Video Games / Gaming / Casino
Source text - English Before we talk about Nioh, we need a context about the scenario in which it takes place. Unlike many games, with fictional worlds, Nioh has a realistic setting with multiple poetic licenses.
The setting was based on a Japanese period called Sengoku Jidai (国 時代 時代), which translates as the Warring States Period. This was the most troubling period in Japanese history and some of the most notorious Japanese historical characters are from this era. A time when samurai lived at war and a peasant could rule all of Japan. As Sengoku Jidai lasted more than a century, I will only mention what really matters to understand Nioh's scenario, which is already at the end of the period.
First of all, you have to explain the Japanese names, the most confusing part for most people. In some Eastern countries like China and Japan, the surname comes before the person's name, so that the name is like this: Oda (Family Name) Nobunaga (Personal Name). This happens because of the importance that the family has in these cultures, since before you, always come your ancestors. Be warned, that any Japanese names that come, will have the family name before the personal name.
There were several famous names at this time. Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Ishida Mitsunari, among others. In this text, there will be only the most important names in the battle of Sekigahara, which is where Nioh will have its climax. Without further ado, I will explain everything you need to know to get a better understanding of the scenario.
After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (臣 秀吉 秀吉) in 1598, there was a power vacuum. His heir was too young to rule, and in a period of political instability, it is impossible to have a five-year-old ruler, even if Hideyoshi had struggled to secure it. He established a council of 5 regents, Tokugawa Ieyasu (川 家 康 康), Maeda Toshiie (田 利 家 家), Mori Terumoto (輝 元 元), Ukita Hideie (喜 多 秀 家 家) and Uesugi Kagekatsu (景 勝 勝). Of these, Tokugawa was the most powerful and likely to dominate Japan thanks to the fact that he was exempt from serving the Japanese army during the failed attempt of conquering China, which is another great subject. Because of this, he had more money and more troops than all the other regents. Hideyoshi also appointed five regional administrators, also called Bugyô (奉行), they were Ishida Mitsunari (三 成 成), Natsuka Masaie (束 正 家 家), Maeda Gen'i (田 玄 以 以), Mashita Nagamori (田 長盛 長盛) And Asano Nagamasa (野 長 政 政). Ishida Mitsunari was already an administrator at the time of Hideyoshi and obtained the antipathy of many by the position that occupied, often speaking in place Hideyoshi himself, and still, there was remorse for the failed China. As Tokugawa planned his Shogun arise, Ishida plotted against him. In 1599, after an assassination attempt failed, thanks to the information network that Tokugawa had, Tokugawa's allies tried to kill Ishida, who ran to Tokugawa and got forgiveness. This is a point where many people differ in interpretations. For me, Tokugawa saw that a final battle for Japan as inevitable and leaving Ishida to unify the forces against him was the best option. A known, predictable and infamous enemy was far better than an unknown force. In April 1600, William Adams arrives in Japan, and his story joins that of Tokugawa, towards the battle of Sekigahara and the unification of Japan, with some Youkai in the mix.
And that's the story that precedes Nioh's major events. A small part of Sengoku Jidai, but very important to understand Japan as it stands today.

Born in Rio de Janeiro from a family of two teachers, ever since I was a kid, I was learning. I never had a strong education in English, but since 10 years old, I was already watching cartoons in English and at 18, had already become completely fluent despite the very basic English taught at schools.
Learning is what I do, and thanks to that, I have developed a strong vocabulary that might help translate many different subjects. Some of them might include Marketing, History, Geopolitics, Geography, Philosophy, Tourism, Education, among others.
I discovered recently that I was already doing translations 2 years ago through my personal blog. I have decided to join this industry and continue improving my already existing skills.
