Pain and Memory pay homage to Baghdad’s Al Mutanabbi Street, the booksellers' district, where a car bomb exploded in March 2007. It remembers the lost cultural and literary heritage and reminds us of the people connected to the life of this street.
This work is the first part of a continuous research inquiry into states of brokenness that started in 2011. It is inspired by the repair technique kintsugi (a practice that, through visual transformation, breathes new life into objects with unique histories of brokenness and usage originating from Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi) and by psychoanalytic cultural studies.
The continued work deals with subjects of trauma, overlaying, exploring and interconnecting broken bodies and subjects, cities and objects as well as experiences and different practices of repair that exist globally.
Yet it is also an acknowledgment, that at times we are unable to repair or decide not to. Often, this leads to further questioning of how, then, can we deal with ongoing states of aftermath - and what happens if we do not reach a state post repair?
Even though today the subject is approached very differently, this book, however, was made in 2012/13 and is a very first attempt to engage with the subtle complexity of the matter, exploring some themes of brokenness as a point of departure.
The work has also revealed how much research in itself is fractured agency: incomplete, impermanent and imperfect - all vital principles of wabi-sabi.
To wounded sites and scarred spaces, to recognizing brokenness in all its complexity, form and plurality, and to the necessity of an ongoing quest to repair(ing) that which has been cracked and fractured and handle that, which is fragile and vulnerable, with care.

يشيد الألم والذاكرة بشارع المتنبي في بغداد، وهو حي بائعي الكتب حيث انفجرت سيارة مفخخة في مارس ٢٠٠٧. والشارع يذّكر التراث الثقافي والأدبي الضائع ويذّكرنا بالأشخاص المرتبطين بحياة هذا الشارع.
هذا العمل هو الجزء الأول من عملية البحث المستمر التي بدأت في عام ٢٠١١ عن حالات من الانهيار والانكسار. وهي مستوحاة من الدراسات الثقافية التحليلية النفسية وتقنية كنسوكي للإصلاح والترميم (وهي ممارسة تبعث الروح من جديد في أغراض لها تاريخ فريد تعرضت فيه للانكسار، ولكن لا يزال يتم استخدامها، من خلال تغيير الشكل المرئي لها. وقد نشأت هذه الممارسة من فلسفة الجمال اليابانية الوابي-سابي).
