I work as a freelance translator and revisor for
nearly 20 years now and I am as passionate about my job as in the very
beginning. I have always loved language in all its facets.
I taught myself reading at the age of four and it was with great enthusiasm that
I studied English, French and Spanish at high school. Later I studied
Romanistic linguistics, literature and sociology at the Universities of
Bielefeld (Germany) and Alicante (Spain) and achieved my master’s degree in
romanistic linguistics cum laude. During my studies I focused mainly on
sociolinguistics, language and gender, dialectology and conversational
analysis.
I worked as a writer, a freelance editor and a
language teacher. I have lived ten years in the Netherlands and I
am living in Spain for twelve years now.
I am fluent in English, Dutch and Spanish and I am in daily contact with my
Dutch and German clients and friends. I literally live every day in several
languages. During my
career as a translator, I specialised in editorial, PR and marketing texts, as
well as educational material, but I also have experience with the translation of
voice overs and subtitles. I translate a lot for the sectors consumer products,
fashion & lifestyle, education and social sciences, but I am also familiar
with the branches transport, home automation, tourism etc.
As a happy
customer puts it:
“… Maike has a great creative ability to
translate marketing texts in a catchy manner. She is not put off by length
restrictions and delivers transcreations with ease. Maike understands the
assignment! Several clients therefore prefer the translations made by Maike. If
you are looking for a translator that can add a bit of flair to your
translation, Maike is the go-to person.” (Marloes Hilderink, L&L
