Bio
  • Early life experience with languages
  • Born in Brussels of multilingual translator parents, I learnt German, English, French Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch from an early age. Modern Greek, Danish came later.
  • List the work you're most proud of
  • I'm most proud of the literary translation I did from Greek into English of the novel I Poli by Spyros Plaskovitis.
  • Industry experience outside of translation
  • Before being a translator, I also briefly worked as a teacher of English and German to foreigners at language schools in Madrid and Corfu and as an audio-typist for the European Court of Auditors in Brussels and Luxembourg.
  • Interests you have, or anything that shows your personality
  • I'm currently learning Polish which is the first Slav language I have ever come into contact with, watch Polish films on the Internet and keep ahead of international and Polish news on television. Also, I listen in to the daily morning radio Dutch-speaking news broadcasts and newspaper commentaries which I find are quite diverse and non-biased.
  • Describe your work process
  • For written translations, I make a list of all words and phrases and translations thereof first. Then I read the text several times in order to fully understand its content in the original language. Preferably, I transfer the original text paragraph by paragraph into my target file and juxtapose each paragraph of the original text with my translation, in order to ensure nothing is left out. After completion, I check the translation against the original with another colleague.
  • Mention accomplishments in and out of translation
  • I am a Member of the Institute of Linguists, London in German. I have A-levels in German and French and O-levels in Italian and Art.
