Swahili to English: Nagona, a novel by Euphrase Kezilahabi General field: Art/Literary
Nilistuka. Nyuma , sikuona mtu. Nilikuwa wapi hapa! Nilitembea kwa harakaharaka kutoka hapo mahali. Nilianza kusikia sauti za watu wasomao vitabu. Walikuwa wakisoma bila kusikilizana. Kila mmoja alikuwa akisoma lake. Sikuona watu wala shule.
Kichomi kilianza kuniuma ubavuni.Nilipiga magoti chini. Kwa maumivu nilianza kutembelea magoti. Nilisikia vicheko vya watu. Nilijaribu kuongeza mwendo. Nilisikia vicheko kutoka karibu katika kila mti. Msitu mzima ulianza kunicheka.
Yaelekea ilikuwa asubuhi nilipozinduka.
Translation - English The evening drew close in the valley where I stood. The light was dim and golden. I don’t really remember seeing the sun. Nor do I remember seeing anyone else. Perhaps clouds of amnesia really had covered me here.
I hadn’t travelled far when I stumbled upon a river. Then, hearing a sudden rumble, I froze in fear of snakes. I found myself walking along this river. And felt, perhaps, that I was heading to the very place where I’d come from
Whether that was the beginning of my journey, I could not say for sure. But I soon grew tired. Seeing a black stone in front of me, I dragged myself towards it. But before I sat down, a sudden cough sounded from behind. In fear, I stood straight and turned. But there was no one. Still shocked I began to hear the steps of a man behind me. But behind, I saw no one. Where was I? Quickly I began walking. Fast, away from that place.
The voices of people, reading a book, murmured all around me. around. They were all reading, without listening to one another. Each person reading a book of their own aloud. But no people. nor any school was to be seen.
A fierce pain then gripped at my ribs. I fell down to my knees and started to crawl in pain. Around me, I heard the laughter of people. Still, on my knees, I hastened my pace. The laughter was now ringing from each tree in the forest. Soon, the whole forest was laughing at me. I saw their branches, laughing as they swung in the wind. Then, all the trees stopped suddenly. Peace fell upon the forest. And all was quiet.
The cries of birds sounded around. I was still on my knees; crawling towards where I do not know. I was flogged on the bum and the back. In the beginning, I was hurt and tried to run. But after some time the pain overcame me. I was hit over and over again, not able to shake it off me. Slowly, I felt consciousness leave me. I fainted into darkness.
It was almost daybreak when I woke up
Swahili to English: George Orwell: 1994

t was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his
breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly
through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not
quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At
one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display,
had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of
about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was
no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut
off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive
in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up,
and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer
above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on
the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster
with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of
those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow
you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING
YOU, the caption beneath it ran.
