After a spell of academic research I joined the real world in 1984, working as research coordinator for a local UK charity. The project was then taken over by the UK's National Autistic Society and I became the Society's Research Officer.
In 1990 I moved to the Special Needs Research Unit at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle, UK, where I was involved in a variety of disability-related research including international collaborative R&D projects funded under the EU's Framework programmes.
I moved to Germany in 1994 and, after a "family break", took the Diploma in Translating and began my second career.
I have been a freelance translator since 1998.
