I offer services in the Mam (Maya Mam) language, including:(1) Interpretation. I have remotely interpreted during attorney-client meetings, psychological evaluations, and legal hearings with migrants from my Mam-speaking community. I can interpret between Spanish and Mam. I am also part of the nonprofit Respond Crisis Translation, a collective of activists fighting for language justice and inclusion.
(2) Translation of documents. I have translated PSAs about legal matters, including a class action notice about family reunification and know-your-rights information about U.S. transit and driver's license laws. I also translated information about public health during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to written translations, I record audio messages reading these documents for people from my community who cannot read. In Guatemala, I have translated for government agencies, providing information about the climate and natural disaster prevention in Mam.
(3) Language classes, cultural immersion, and weaving. I offer private in-person and virtual classes to students who want to learn the Mam language. I also host them in my home so that they can live alongside my family and practice the Mam language. I currently work for the Casa Xelajú language school Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, where I give Mam classes and weaving workshops.
My clients include INSIVUMEH Guatemala, CONRED, the Southern Poverty Law Center, Al Otro Lado, and other nonprofit and government organizations.
