English to Latvian: translation of computer operating systems-related article (fragment)
Source text - English
By the 1960s, with computers in wide industrial use for many purposes, it became common for them to be used for many different jobs within an organization. Soon, special software to automate the scheduling and execution of these many jobs became available. The combination of managing "hardware" and scheduling jobs became known as the "operating system"; the classic example of this type of early operating system was OS/360 by IBM.

The next major development in operating systems was timesharing - the idea that multiple users could use the machine "simultaneously" by keeping all of their programs in memory, executing each user's program for a short time so as to provide the illusion that each user had their own computer. Such a development required the operating system to provide each user's programs with a "virtual machine" such that one user's program could not interfere with another's (by accident or design). The range of devices that operating systems had to manage also expanded; a notable one was hard disks; the idea of individual "files" and a hierarchical structure of "directories" (now often called folders) greatly simplified the use of these devices for permanent storage. Security access controls, allowing computer users access only to files, directories and programs they had permissions to use, were also common.

Tādēļ katrs likums ir spēkā kamēr to atceļ.

There can be countries where a newly adopted law becomes effective gradually, that is, in function of the distance [from the place of legislating] -- this was the case, e.g., in Russia and France. A law that has been pronounced remains effective infinitely, unless the law provides for a limited time. Thus, every legal act is effective until it is revoked.

Legislating also brings up the question about the chronological effectiveness of a given law. One principle says that a law may not retroact. Rights and responsibilities arise from a legal fact that establishes, changes or terminates a relationship; as concerns effectiveness of a law at a given moment, it should be based on that legal fact. If, on the contrary, the legal fact has occurred in the past, when an older law was effective, then the older law should be applied. Latvian-English translation by Valters Feists

[..]
- Paklau! - Uraș̌imatarō uzsauca puikām. - Varbūt gribat pārdot bruņurupuci man?

http://blog.ford.com/
http://sellingtobigcompanies.blogs.com/
http://blogs.snapstream.com/

"web" - voratinklis, pasaulinis tinklas [tinklas];
"log" - registras, įrašų visuma [raštas].
Mano pasliūlymas atrodytų taip - "tinklaraštis".

  • "What is the translation of blog (a twaddle area)?"
What's up now? Why do you think a blog is a twaddle area? Same as everywhere else, there are people who just wag their tongues; and there are those who write on serious subjects. Let me list a few examples (corporate blogs):
http://blog.ford.com/
http://sellingtobigcompanies.blogs.com/
http://blogs.snapstream.com/
etc.
  • "Blogs are artefacts that belong to a fashion (and therefore, are transient) or to a subculture (and therefore, are part of a particular lingo) just like dreadlocks, punk movement, postmodernism, funky style, jazz..."
I can hardly agree with you and I think that blogging will continue long into the future. Here are just a few — of the many — possible ways of using the service:
- personal diary,
- corporate news bulletin,
- technology reviews,
- reviews of various events,
- political commentary,
- fan clubs
and so on and so forth.
  • "Thus, there is a corresponding ordinary term in Lithuanian: "Interneto dienoraščiai" ("Internet diaries"), or even more directly: "diaries". And that is how they have been referred to until now on some of the Lithuanian websites (Bitė plius; the "takeliai" section of Takas.lt; etc.)."
Exactly! That's why we chose the same word as the name of our new project: dienorasciai.lt.
Audrius
2006-02-06 06:04
[..]
I've been using to this day a compound term: "interneto dienoraščiai" ("internet diaries"). That's precise enough and yet awfully long-winded.

In fact, "blog" is nothing else than a compound made from "web" and "log". The shortened form is favoured most likely because "weblog" and "the blog" sound very similar in English. In Lithuanian it will not be possible to keep a similar play on words, therefore I'd propose to forget about the letter "b" and create a neologism by sticking as much as possible to an exact mechanism of translating:
"web" - voratinklis ("spider web"), pasaulinis tinklas ("global network") [tinklas] (network; the web); "log" - registras ("registry", "journal"), įrašų visuma ("collection of records") [raštas] (article; writings; works; handwriting). Hence, I would come up with "tinklaraštis" (webwritings).

Wise choices in the bread and cereal group in one-serving equivalents are a slice of whole-grain bread; one ounce of ready-to-eat cereal, with a whole grain listed as the first or second ingredient; one-half to three-fourths cup of cooked cereal, and one-half bagel or English muffin.

Each of these foods is about equal nutritionally. They provide at least two grams of protein, one-half to 2 milligrams of iron, and adequate B vitamins, including thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. An added bonus is that each contains only about 1 gram of fat and less than 200 calories.

Although pancakes are similar nutritionally to other foods in the bread and cereal group, they are higher in fat, containing 2-3 grams on average. Avoid smothering them with high-calorie, high-fat toppings.

Jack London, "Story Of An Eyewitness"

Collier's Magazine, May 5, 1906

The earthquake shook down in San Francisco hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of walls and chimneys. But the conflagration that followed burned up hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of property. There is no estimating within hundreds of millions the actual damage wrought. Not in history has a modern imperial city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco is gone. Nothing remains of it but memories and a fringe of dwelling-houses on its outskirts. Its industrial section is wiped out. Its business section is wiped out. Its social and residential section is wiped out. The factories and warehouses, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the hotels and the palaces of the nabobs, are all gone. Remains only the fringe of dwelling houses on the outskirts of what was once San Francisco.

A Caravan of Trunks

All night these tens of thousands fled before the flames. Many of them, the poor people from the labor ghetto, had fled all day as well. They had left their homes burdened with possessions. Now and again they lightened up, flinging out upon the street clothing and treasures they had dragged for miles.

They held on longest to their trunks, and over these trunks many a strong man broke his heart that night. The hills of San Francisco are steep, and up these hills, mile after mile, were the trunks dragged. Everywhere were trunks with across them lying their exhausted owners, men and women. Before the march of the flames were flung picket lines of soldiers. And a block at a time, as the flames advanced, these pickets retreated. One of their tasks was to keep the trunk-pullers moving. The exhausted creatures, stirred on by the menace of bayonets, would arise and struggle up the steep pavements, pausing from weakness every five or ten feet.

[..]

Ceļojuma lāžu karavāna

Visu nakti desmitiem tūkstošu iedzīvotāju bēga no uguns viesuļa.

My skills are further strengthened by my experience in copywriting, journalism (in Latvian and in English — since late 1990s), editorial work, comparative terminology research, as well as education and close cooperation with several of the respective industries.

Working as a translator since 1995 and delivering a broad variety of projects — from localisation to prose/poetry and advertising copy — I have mastered both formal and creative translation.

I translate technical manuals, press releases, articles, websites, correspondence, advertising brochures, internal documents, tender bids, legal contracts, training material, multimedia courses, HR and customer survey forms and responses, medical files, interviews, essays, subtitles, certificates, slogans, names, artwork titles and annotations ... and many more!

My approach combines:
> professional CAT tools usage (Wordfast, SDL/Trados, MemoQ, XTM Cloud...)
> confidentiality & support
> compliance and teamwork with the customer
   (guidelines, terminology, availability and deadlines)
> always proofreading from the reader's point of view.
In sum: Best readability on the market!
