For the 2007-2008 academic year, educational and living costs are estimated at $41,000/year. More than half of this amount is budgeted for room & board. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a form of atypical pneumonia, caused by a new member of the corona virus family. It is an infection in which affected individuals develop a fever >38 C or 100.4 F, occurring around day 2-3, followed by respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing around day 4-5. In some cases, the respiratory symptoms become increasingly severe, and people require oxygen support and mechanical ventilation. Other symptoms of SARS include chills, muscle aches, malaises, headaches, sore throat and diarrhea (Fever is noted in 100% of patients with SARS).
At this time, the only risk factor identified is close contact with a person who has SARS. Close contact includes living in the same household, providing health care to someone with SARS, or having direct contact with respiratory secretions and body fluids of a person with SARS. The major route of transmission is through infected respiratory droplets passed from person to person contact. There is no evidence to suggest airborne transmission. Other routes of transmission including contaminated surfaces or through human wastes are being considered as well.
