In Crisis in Masculinity, I tell about Richard, a man who was split from his true self. He lived (most of the time) out of the immature, hurting little boy: the small lad who early in life, due to grievous reaction to trauma and to an ongoing inability to relate meaningfully to his father, began to live out of diseased, inferior feelings about himself. He was unaffirmed as a male (sexual identity) and as a man (full gender identity). He was unable to separate his personal and sexual identity from that of his mother's. He saw his father as manly and masculine, but he could not "touch" it in him. He could not bond with his father's masculinity in such a way as to find his own "ignited" and blessed. His own masculinity was all there, but his feeling about himself was such that he could never recognize it. These feelings took up such an autonomous life within him that affirming words from others simply went in one ear and out the other - he could not receive them.
He did not live from the center as an affirmed son would, that blessed stance which is a more or less unconscious position. Instead, he lived very self-consciously out of a cluster of diseased attitudes and feelings toward himself. He was split. There was a terrible chasm of non-being within him. He therefore had the disease of introspection. Richard stood, as it were, outside himself, analyzing, hating, rejecting, pitying, despairing over himself. If we think of this in terms of a complex of inferior, negative feelings about the self, we can see that he was living from the locus of an inferiority neurosis. That was his home, his center.
