Translation about the (in)famous Pink Floyd's concert in Venice
This has been the translation of a graduation thesis about the famous concert Pink Floyd held in Piazza San Marco in 1989.
It talks about everything that happened "behind the scenes" and that most people (at least, outside Venice) do not know.
Politicians and managers at all levels fought a battle for power and personal and political interests in order to get all rewards deriving from the concert without getting charged of responsibilities.
Their other aim was to blow upon their political and non-political opponents.
In the end, the only losers were the audience: thousands and thousands of people were left for hours under the burning sun, with no water, no hygiene measures, and had to attend a concert where the stage was 90 metres far from them.

Anche Venezia e con lei il mondo dello spettacolo e della musica ebbe, nel 1989, la sua piccola, ma grande, rivoluzione. Il 15 luglio, in concomitanza con la festa del Redentore suonarono, di fronte ad una Piazza San Marco colma all’inverosimile, i Pink Floyd, senza dubbio una delle più famose rock band al mondo. Centinaia di migliaia di persone riversarono in una città impreparata ad accoglierli, per assistere a quello che era stato definito “il concerto del secolo”. Decine di milioni furono gli spettatori che videro il concerto trasmesso in diretta in ogni parte del mondo, anche dalla televisione della Germania dell’est. Fu la prima trasmissione di musica rock trasmessa a Berlino Est. Proprio, ma forse non fu un caso, a pochi mesi prima della caduta del muro. Un concerto che ancora oggi rimane unico nella sua maestosità, nel coraggio ma anche nelle mancanze e negli errori di chi lo organizzò e di chi lo permise.
Questo lavoro vuole ripercorrere i momenti che portarono una delle più famose rock band del mondo a suonare in una delle città più celebri al mondo, di fronte a centinaia di migliaia di spettatori e decine di milioni di telespettatori, ripercorrendone la storia attraverso gli articoli del quotidiano veneziano Il Gazzettino, e attraverso le interviste ai protagonisti metterne in luce i lati positivi e negativi. Infine riviverne il ricordo attraverso fotografie, documenti e riproduzioni delle prime pagine del Gazzettino dedicate a questo avvenimento.
Translation - English 1989 was a year of great revolutions and changes. Two events stand above all others: in the month of June the massacre of the students in Tienanmen in Beijing, and in the month of November the fall of the Berlin wall. In 1989, Venice along with the world of the show and music also had its small, yet great, revolution. On July 15th, in concomitance with the festivity of Jesus Saviour, the Pink Floyd, undoubtedly one of the most famous rock bands in the world, played in front of Saint Mark's Square that was flooded with people. Hundreds of thousands of people poured in a town not ready to receive them, in order to assist to what it had been defined as “the concert of the century”. There were tens of millions of viewers watching the concert live broadcasted by televisions in every nation of the world, including East Germany. It was the first music rock transmission broadcasted in East Berlin. Just, but perhaps it was not a case, a few months before the fall of the wall. A concert that still today remains unique in its majesty but also in the courage, deficiencies and mistakes of those who organized and allowed it.
This work aims to go over again the moments that brought one of most famous rock bands in the world playing in one of the most celebrated towns in the world, in front of hundreds of thousands of people and tens of millions of viewers, going over its history again through the articles of the Venetian daily newspaper Il Gazzettino, and to bring to light its positive and negative sides through the interviews to the protagonists. Finally, it aims to make its memory live again through photographs, documents and reproductions of the first pages dedicated to this event by Il Gazzettino.
