- Oui, évitez des commentaires mettant en lumière vos faiblesses passagères ou permanentes. Du genre :
Ce n’est pas à ma main !
Là j’en mettrai pas une !
Il est impossible d’y aller !
Je l’ai juste lâchée. Qu’est ce que ça roule !
Ne « m’envoie pas si loin ». Je n’y arrive plus !
Ne « passez jamais » à ce genre d’aveux. Dites-vous bien qu’une partie se joue en 13 (ou en 11) points, et que, avec un peu de chance, vos défauts resteront inaperçus…
- Quelle est la question qu’il ne faut jamais poser ?
- C’est paradoxalement la question que l’on entend le plus fréquemment au cours d’une partie… « Combien, de boules vous reste-t-il ? » Elle est, à mon avis, de celles qui déclassent un joueur et dévaluent une équipe. Car, à tout moment, il faut savoir non seulement le nombre de boules de l’adversaire, mais encore et surtout dans quelles mains elles sont. De la réponse à cette question dépend très souvent la tactique à adopter. Sachant qu’il vaut mieux faire tirer un pointeur et pointer un tireur…
Au sujet de cette fameuse question à ne pas poser, je me souviens d’une anecdote qui date de quelques années… Au cours d’une partie de début de concours, un des joueurs de la formation qui nous était opposée se tourna vers mon frère Jean et lui demanda : « Vous avez combien de boules ? ». Jean lui répondit sans sourciller : « Deux ! »… Après un moment d’hésitation, celui qui avait posé « la question qui ne se pose pas » de revenir à la charge : « Comment deux, il ne vous en reste qu’une… »
Et Jean de répondre sur le ton de la galéjade : « Oui, une ! Mais dans les mains de mon frère, elle en vaut… deux ! »

- Парадоксально, но именно тот вопрос, который мы слышим чаще всего в ходе партии…. « Сколько шаров у вас остается? » Он, по моему мнению, из ряда тех, что снижает класс игрока и обесценивает команду. Это потому, что в любое время, надо знать не только число шаров у соперника, но главным образом еще и то, в чьих руках они находятся. От ответа на этот вопрос очень часто зависит применяемая тактика. Известно, что лучше заставить метнуть шар прицеливающегося и подбросить к кошонету шар бросающего …
По поводу этого замечательного вопроса, который не следует задавать, я вспоминаю анекдот, которому уже несколько лет. В ходе дебютной конкурсной партии один из игроков команды соперников повернулся к моему брату Жану и спросил у него: « Сколько у Вас шаров? ». Жан ему ответил, не моргнув глазом: « Два! ». ..После небольшого замешательства, тот, кто задал « вопрос, который не стоит задавать » возобновил попытку: « Как два, у вас остается только один … »
А Жан таинственно произнес: « Да, один! Но в руках моего брата он стоит двух! »

Source text - English Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival.
Translation - Russian Раньше зимы в Англии были холодными. Мы, и особенно родители, коротали их, смотря борьбу по телевизору. Борьба, которую они смотрели по черно-белым телевизорам в субботу после обеда, на короткое время привносила в их монотонное существование жизнь и цвет. Рабочие комбинезоны родителей были полинялыми, не менявшееся годами покрывало на диване, было выцветшим, память о том, какими людьми они были до того, как приехали в Англию, тоже постепенно стиралась. Поколение моих родителей лучшие годы своей жизни потратило на изнурительный труд на фабрике за нищенскую зарплату. Жизнь, в которой было все: непосильный труд, согнутые спины, хронические артриты, загрубевшие руки. Они кусали губы и терпели боль. У них не было выбора. Мысленно родители пытались отключиться – не замечать пренебрежение тех, кто работал рядом с ними, не отвечать на колкие замечания со стороны начальства, а индийские женщины еще старались не обижаться на своих мужей за пощечины. Терпи боль – говорили они себе, борись с болью – со стреляющей болью в руках, в поврежденных суставах, с приступами боли в спине от долгого сидения за швейной машинкой в течение многих лет, в узловатых от стирки одежды пальцах, в коленях, ноющих от мойки кухонных полов старыми кальсонами мужа.
Когда мои родители садились смотреть борьбу в субботу после обеда с чашкой чая с кардамоном и молоком в руке, они хотели развлечься, посмеяться. Они также желали, чтобы хороший парень хотя бы раз одержал победу над плохим парнем. Они хотели, чтобы чванливый и кричащий, как осел, задира получил взбучку.
