Source text - English On Translating “The Sunday Drive” What difficulties confront the translator of a text by William H. Gass? Apart, that is, form the difficulties known to any translator of any literary text: differences of environment, culture, and mental habits, as well as linguistic problems regarding tense, aspect or mode? The following text will point out a few of those difficulties by facing eight paragraphs from Gass’s piece “The Sunday Drive” with a German translation, each section to be followed by a commentary on the text and an evaluation of the special implications which that text presented to the translator. The following analysis, however, is not meant to be merely an exercise in translation. But I intend to show that finding a translation that scores high by the usual criteria is often not of prime importance. Instead, the translator needs to understand the underlying aesthetic principle of the text and reenact it within his or her own cultural setting and linguistic context. Not even the briefest philosophy of poetic translation can dispense with an attempt to describe how any such translation mirrors, among other things, the translator’s experience of his or her “personal” encounter with the author. This personal encounter comes into existence independently of the distance between the author and the translator in space and time. Taking the text as a given, the translator seeks to identify with the author in order to gain mental and emotional access to the text --to recreate the text, as it were. Translating a poetic text thus becomes a romantically erotic art. Even if the translator is originally in the position of simply wanting to serve, he or she will always eventually en up wanting to transform the text and thereby gain power over it. This, by the way, may account for the defiant enthusiasm of so many translators, most of them ill paid and employed only at irregular intervals. It goes without saying that the author is usually well advised to avoid any "real" contact with his enthusiastic translator. The translator will be the first to discover the weaknesses of the author's text and, in the process of remedying them, manipulate the author --something the author would want to avoid even if it ’ere in the best interest of the text. The foregoing may well be correct and applicable to most cases of translation, but it is also a pretty banal situation. Paradoxically, the relationship between author and translator becomes interesting only when an author –like Gass—attempts to create objects mad of words which will take an independent place among other objects of this world. Such an author attempts to create things --like the barns in the following text-- that are "lost, alone, alive," that need to be encountered by the reader, or the translator, on their own terms. Here identification with the author via his text is no longer possible, and the translator in the assumed role of privileged reader no longer has an easier access to the text. Instead, it becomes his task to follow the author’s lead and create as great a distance as possible between himself and the text in order to help the objects in the text to take their place in the world. The erotic atmosphere between author and translator becomes chilly under these circumstances, and while a distance in time or space could never prevent the erotics of translation as long as the translator had hope of identifying with the author, in a case like Gass’s even “real” closeness would not help to achieve better results when rendering Gass’s text in another language. ... To translate these paragraphs at all adequately is close to impossible. One can only attempt to achieve a certain literalness. However, one stylistic change that became necessary on rendering Gass’s text in German nevertheless requires special attention. It is a well-known fact (illustrated once again in the present text) that German sentences tend to be longer than English sentences. German sentences are usually more convoluted, and their structure tends to be hypotactic rather that paratactic. (For this reason some bilingual german readers, including myself, find it easier to read Kant, Hegel, or Gadamer in English translation). The style Gass employs in these paragraphs, however, is so intricately metaphorical, subtly leading from one association to the next, that it was impossible to retain the convoluted English sentence structure. Although conjunctions and prepositions have been added where necessary in order to create a comparable chain of thought and feeling --like the loops of fine wire into which the silos are "wrapped"-- the German sentences had to be broken in many places. There appeared to be no way in which the "singularly gawky beauty” of Gass’s sentences could be rendered in another language. ... Whether Gass’s text has been adequately translated according to the usual criteria, or its underlying aesthetic principle has been understood and reenacted n the German text, the reader is called upon to judge for him or herself. But one thing is clear: in order to recreate this text in the manner of traditional philosophy of translation would have it, one would have to be William H. Gass himself. Gass? A parte, por supuesto, de las dificultades que reconoce cualquier traductor, y que entraña cualquier texto literario: diferencias de entorno, cultura, y hábitos mentales, así como problemas lingüísticos relacionados con el tiempo, el aspecto, o el modo. El texto que sigue destacará algunas de esas dificultades, confrontando ocho párrafos sacados de la obra de Gass, “The Sunday Drive” con una traducción alemana; cada sección viene seguida de un comentario del texto y una evaluación de los puntos del texto especialmente trascendentes para el traductor. De esta forma, la traducción se convierte en una arte románticamente erótico. Aun si la intención inicial del traductor sea la de simplemente estar al servicio del texto, al final siempre acabará por querer transformarlo, adquiriendo así poder sobre el mismo. Esto, sea dicho de paso, puede explicar el entusiasmo desafiante de tantos traductores, la mayoría de los cuales están mal pagados y empleados solamente a intervalos irregulares. Ni que decir tiene que el autor normalmente desea evitar cualquier contacto “real” con este tipo de traductor entusiasta. El traductor será el primero en descubrir los puntos débiles del texto del autor, y, en su intento de subsanarlos, lo manipulará; algo que éste querrá evitar, aun cuando esta manipulación se llevara a cabo en beneficio del texto. Todo esto puede que sea cierto y aplicable para la mayoría de las traducciones, pero también es algo bastante banal. Paradójicamente, la relación entre el autor y su traductor se vuelve interesante a partir del momento en que el autor --como hace Gass-- trata de crear objetos hechos de palabras que ocupan su puesto independiente entre los demás objetos de este mundo. Este tipo de autor trata de crear objetos --como los graneros en el texto que sigue-- que están "perdidos, solos, vivos", con los que el lector, o el traductor, deben encontrarse, según las condiciones que éstos imponen. Así, ya no es posible identificarse con el autor a través de su texto, y el traductor, en su supuesto papel de lector privilegiado, ya no dispone de una mayor facilidad para acceder al texto. En su lugar, la tarea del traductor se convierte en seguir la pista del autor y distanciarse lo más posible del texto, para ayudar a que los objetos dentro del texto ocupen su lugar en el mundo. En estas circunstancias, el ambiente erótico entre el autor y su traductor se enfría, y aunque la distancia temporal o espacial nunca podría impedir el erotismo de la traducción, siempre que el traductor tuviera la esperanza de poderse identificar con el autor, en un caso como el de Gass, incluso una proximidad "real" no podría ayudar a conseguir mejores resultados al traducir su texto a otro idioma. ... Traducir estos párrafos de forma apropiada es prácticamente imposible. El traductor solo puede tratar de alcanzar una cierta literalidad. Sin embargo, un cambio estilístico que se hizo necesario al traducir el texto de Gass al alemán sí que merece atención especial. Es bien sabido (como se pone de nuevo de manifiesto en el presente texto) que las frases en alemán suelen ser más largas que en inglés. Las frases alemanas suelen ser más enrevesadas, y su estructura tiende a ser subordinante y no coordinante. (Esta es la razón por la que para algunos lectores bilingües en alemán e inglés, entre los que me incluyo, es más fácil leer a Kant, Hegel, o Gadamer en su traducción inglesa). Pero el estilo que utiliza Gass en estos párrafos es tan intrincadamente metafórico, que lleva sutilmente de una asociación a la siguiente, que era imposible mantener la estructura gramática enrevesada del inglés. Aunque se hayan añadido conjunciones y preposiciones donde haya sido necesario, para crear una caden de pensamiento y sentimiento comparable –como los lazos de fino alambre que “envuelven” los silos—hubo que romper las frases alemanas en muchos sitios. Parecía que no había manera de traducir la "belleza singularmente desgarbada" de las frases de Gass a otro idioma. ... El lector mismo es el que debe juzgar si el texto de Gass se ha traducido apropiadamente según los criterios habituales, o si su principio estético esencial ha sido comprendido y reproducido en el texto alemán. Pero hay algo que está claro: para conseguir recrear este texto de la forma que querría la filosofía tradicional de la traducción, habría que ser el propio William H. Gass.
